HT1408 Connection dropping while using Migration Assistant
My PC and Mac keep disconnecting before the transfer is done using Migration Assistant. I have them directly connected with an ethernet cable. Are there any particular settings I should change to ensure the connection holds?
Hey T.Orr,
Try a diffrent Ethernet cable there might be smething wrong with that one. Also turn of wifi on both of the computers.

I started up migration assistant on the Pc again and now says waiting for mac to connect! New MacBook Air is stuck at transferring information. How do I get the process to reconnect and continue?
Whew, good luck!
What version of OSX is on the older one? -
I bought a new iMac today. I'm using migration assistant to move all my software, but the time just keeps getting longer. It says connect an Ethernet cable for faster data transfer. I did, but that doesn't seem to help. Any ideas?
m1doc,
Are you migrating from a Mac or a MS Window machine? Either way you probably should be in touch with AppleCare, you have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support. They can usually help on issues like this. If you don't know the phone number please use http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 to help find the number in your country. -
I am having trouble transferring files from an old MacBook (2007) to a MacBook Air over a wireless network. The connection was interrupted and the time was over 24 hours. Is there a better way to do this? I'm using Migration assistant. The lack of an ethernet port on MacBook air does not help.

I am trying to use migration assistant to move everything from snow leopard (10.6.8) to mountain lion (10.8.3) using a direct machine to machine ethernet cable connection but it stalls out at about 17 minutes remaining. Thoughts on how to proceed?
Have you set both to never sleep?
Is the source (old) Mac's software up to date (including the Migration Assistant for Mac OS X Snow Leopard update)?
Is the old Mac healthy? Have you run Verify Disk on it lately?
The estimates are wildly inaccurate under the best of circumstances. How long has it been stuck? -
Started the transfer process from my old MacBook to a new MacBook pro using Migration assistant 12 hours ago. The screen says transferring your information. Moving about 270 GB using an Ethernet cable directly connected. Is this normal?
You can get a thunderbolt to firewire adapter. You can then get a firewire 400 to 800 cable and put the old computer in target mode. Then you can follow these instructions.

Choose migrate from other disk or volume. -
After using "migration assistant" from my old iMac to my new iMac, some tools stick while using Photoshop CS 6 Extended. My current operation system is 10.10 Yosemite. I was wondering if UN installing then RE installing CS 6 might solve the problem. If this is recommended, I would need complete instructions on doing this. I have there serial number for the product.
using migration assistant is problematic.
at this point yes, you should uninstall everything migrated, clean and then reinstall properly using the installation files.

Just got an iMac. I am trying to use Migration Assistant. The Mac side seems to be doing it's job, but my PC just keeps "Waiting for the Mac to connect." For over an hour.
Probably a PC issue, you can try calling AppleCare, you are covered for 90 days from the date of purchase and can find the phone number in the owners manual. Also please look over:

Thomas,
It would also be extremely helpful to those trying to help you if you complted your Profile so we at least know what iMac and version of OS X is installed. Click Your Stuff in the upper right then click Profile and complete the necessary fields including what part of the planet you're located. -
How do you avoid Connection Time Out when using Migration Assistant
Connection Time Out occurred when trying to use Migration Assistant to Transfer filess from a Windows Computer to a new iMac. What do I do to avoid this?
I've connected the Windows computer to the iMac using an ethernet cable and both computers are on the same network. When I started the transfer, it said it was copying the first file on both machines but nothing was happening. Then finally it said there was a Connection Time out. Is there anything else I need to check?I suspect it has something to do with your network settings on your PC. I'd recommend calling AppleCare right away. you have 90 days of free AppleCare telelphone support, they can help walk you through the process. Also if you haven't already i'd strongly recommend Pondini's guide to using Migration Assistant. You can locate it by clicking:

I am in the process of using Migration Assistant to transfer my 2008 MacBook Pro to my MacBook Pro with Retina. I am currently using USB to transfer and it is taking a long time (as expected). I am trying to increase the speed of this process. Am I able to connect ethernet to thunderbolt without stopping the process? Can I just plug in the cable and not have the hault the process, but speed it up? Thanks!!!
Since you're just sending data, it won't "mess" things up, but you "may" have some cleanup on your hands, depending on what's been transferred. If you want to stop: Command + Q on both machines.

Just used Migration Assistant and can't access files, get message
I just used Migration Assistant to move files (per directions on screen) from my older iMac to new G4 running 10.4.1. It seems as though everything has transferred, but when I try to open folders that have migrated, I get a window that says, "The folder could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access privileges".
Is there a way to obtain these privileges? Not sure how to proceed. If not, should I scrap everything and just drag and drop files? I had hoped to preserve all of my settings, address books, older email (using macmail program), etc...
Any help is greatly appreciated!Hello christine:
Do you really mean OS X 10.4.1? The current level is now OS X 10.4.11.
Try running permission repair from disk utility. If that does not work, I think I would do an archive and install on the G4:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Than would install a pristine OS X (which would need to be updated while preserving your files, programs, and settings.

I used Migration Assistant from my Time Machine for my iMac to my Macbook Pro (I'm pretty sure) when setting up my new laptop to transfer files I wanted from my desktop; now I have new files on my iMac that I'd like to transfer, and I'm wondering if Migration Assistant will send files that I already transferred to my Macbook again, thus creating doubles of files on my Macbook
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Migration Assistant creates a new account to transfer files from another Mac, so you will end with doubles of files on the MacBook.
To avoid this, you can go with the easier way: get an external drive, copy all the files you have on your iMac to the external drive, connect it to the MacBook and copy the files on the external drive to the folder you want to.
Another way is to transfer them through your network. If you have OS X Lion or Mountain Lion on both Macs and they are connected to the same network, use AirDrop to transfer your files. Simply open a Finder window on the iMac and choose AirDrop in the sidebar. Then, drag the files you want to transfer to your MacBook Pro's icon.
Finally, if you have FireWire in both Macs, you can use Target Disk mode on your iMac (hold the T key while your iMac is starting), so your MacBook Pro will detect your iMac's hard drive as an external drive and you will be able to transfer whatever you need
