HT1414 how can I update software on an old ipod?

Hey Guys,

Thanks for your help ;-)

I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.
Identifying iPod models
iPod touch (3rd generation)
iPod touch (3rd generation) features a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display and 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive. You can browse the web with Safari and watch YouTube videos with Wi-Fi. You can also search, preview, and buy songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPod touch.
The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.

A 2G to 4.2.1. Requires iTunes version 10.X. That requires a Mac with OSX 10.5.8 or later. With 1OSX 10.4.11 you can only go to iTunes 9.X which gets you as high as iOS 4.1
A 3G to 5.1.1  Requires iTunes version 10.5 or later
A 4G to 6  Requires iTunes version 10.7 or later. For a Mac, that requires a Mac with OSX 10.6.8 or later

It will tell you there is an update available.  Choose to update. You can click the check for update button as well.
What itunes version do you have?
Are you sure you have an ipod touch 4th gen?  You said it was old, but the 4th gen is the latest ipod touch.
Maybe you should explain what the problem is.

  • How can I update software on iPhone 3g from ios 3.1.3 to ios 4?

Recently been given an iPhone 3g. I had to restore the phone to sync to my iTunes. Now a lot of apps will not download as I need at least iOS 4 but the phone is iOS 3. iTunes tells me that this is the latest software for this model when I check for updates. Is there anyway to update to iOS 4?

The iPhone in question, iPhone 3g is running software version ios 3.1.3, my current iTunes is running 10.6.3. How can I update the software on said iPhone to iOS 4 from 3.1.3 if iTunes informs me that the current software is up to date.
The iPhone has pretty much been rendered useless as I can not download majority of apps. Therefore it just works as a pretty basic phone.

  • How can I get updated software for my old ipod?

I have contacted ITUNES first.  I have several songs I recently purchased and show downloaded.  But they willnot sync to the IPOD.  Therefore ITUNES can no longer help and has suggested that I need a software update.  How can I get my IPOD updated with new software?  I tried going into settings>general> but there is no option to select for software updates.

    You probably don't update.
A 2nd gen can only go to 4.2.1
    3rd to 5.1.1
    4th to 6.1.3
    5th to 7.0.2
Was it telling you to update itunes?

  • My imac is 10.5.8 how can I update software, because I can't get into itunes anymore

    I am running 10.5.8
I am now booted out of iTunes because I need the latest iTunes version, but when i try to downlaod that, I am told my software version will not support my itunes version. I am stuck between a rock and a hard place. How can I move up from 10.5.8?

Start by checking if you cn run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $20 for a single user, or $30 for a family pack that covers up to 5 Macs.  You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
If you are outside the US call your national Apple Helpline:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
If you're in the UK, use this number: 0871 508 4400
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.

  • How can I update software on iMac not connected to Internet

I recently gave my old iMac to my parents, and they don't currently have internet access.
Is there a way I can somehow get software and security updates installed? Was thinking maybe downloading on my computer without installing, then taking them on a flash drive to install on the non-connected computer, or something along those lines. Or maybe there's another way to obtain the updates...?

First, you need to know what you need. And somehow you will have to get your parents' Mac connected to find out what they need.
Then you can download individual updates from Apple Support. Click on View All Support Downloads in the upper right corner.
Word of caution: you don't need to constantly update the machine, in fact it's better if you don't, esp. if the machine is working properly. Check a couple of times a year; decide whether or not you really need the updates. Apply only what you need. If you poke around the forums you will discover that a lot of people cause themselves their own problems by doing automatic updates and/or not researching the update(s) first, and/or not thinking through what they're doing.

You need to transfer all the music on this old iPod to your iTunes library first before you can sync it to your new iPod.

  • I just bought a new ipod shuffle, how can i transfer music from my old ipod onto the new one

How do I transfer from my old ipod to my new ipod

You can't transfer it directly.  If the old iPod is set to sync to your iTunes library on the computer, everything on the iPod is in your iTunes library.  Just set up the shuffle to sync from your iTunes library as desired.
If the old iPod is set to Manually manage music, AND there are songs on the iPod that are not in your current iTunes library, please post back.

  • How can I transfer music from an old Ipod to a new one?

I have an older Ipod and just bought an I pod touch.  How can I transfer the music from my old one to the new one?
    Thanks!

All of your music should be in itunes on your computer.  If it is not, then put it there.
You can then sync it to the ipod.

  • How can I transfer songs from my old Ipod to my new one?

I just bought a new ipod video from apple and I would like to transfer all of my songs from my old 3rd generation ipod to my new one, how can I do this?

Download iRip, the program will detect your iPod then select "recover". If you have a firewire connection this will be fast. If you have a new iPod then you'll wait a little longer for your music to be ripped. When everything's recovered you eject the old iPod and connect the new one, drag'n drop, voilá. Don't forget to get rid of your music once you are sure it's installed -and maybe backuped in a external hard drive- so your computer memory won't be affected.
I use mac, I'm noticing that you are windows, if this don't work, google "rip ipod" and you'll find something there. Hope it works!
