i started the update on my iphone 4 and the creen went to an apple symbol with a progress bar , then to a black screen with the apple symbol and thren to a picture of a USB with arrow to itunes. how do i fix this ,end this ??????? unable to use phone

Connect your phone to itunes and restore it by clicking the restore button, then restore from backup.

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.
iOS: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

Due to the power outage the update was unable to be applied properly. You will need to grab a micro usb cable and restore via iTunes.

I use an Akai usb turntable with the Audacity sw delivered with it. To monitor during recording I also use the LineIn utility (all this on a Macbook Pro with Mavericks).
It works fine, only the input volume of the usb audio port cannot be adjusted (at least I did not yet discover how to do it) and the volume of the music is lower than other music imported into iTunes from CD or iTunes store, but still acceptable.

Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
If nothiing above helped, restore the iPhone to factory settings > Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings

For those interested, the solution (at least in my case) is pretty simple:
--Contact Apple Support and explain.
--Have first-level support misinterpret your request.
--Re-explain and ask for resolution.
--Have the purchased items added to your download queue and then hit Check For Purchases.
--Sit back and enjoy.
Based on the WWDC announcements on 08-Jun, going forward, the solution will apparently be:
--Download it from iCloud.

Demonstrably, purchases on iTunes are not one and only copy--even more so now with the entire concept of iCloud, but even beforehand you could download apps many times if you had bought them and removed them from your iOS device. You'd think with all those discussion points, you'd troll less and actually give thought to responses more, but sometimes I say crazy things.
