Just had this similiar issue with my iPod. Simple steps found through the Apple Support Website. Follow this link:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320, or follow instructions listed below to reset a frozen iPod nano/classic/color display/click-wheel, etc.:
1) Toggle the Hold switch on and then off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again)
2) Press and hold the Menu and center buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. This step may need to be repeated. (*sidenote...I also found that the iPod would not respond/reset when it was connected to my computer. It just continued to state that it was connected and needed to be ejected before disconnecting. I pulled the link cable out of the frozen iPod and followed the above steps and it reset normally.)

I can see face time invites appearing on the screen and messages, even the alarm has come on this morning but the screen touch has gone and the sleep button only makes the screen request you 'slide to turn off' but then after plenty of time, the screen it's stuck on comes back - it wont bring the apple icon up.

My ipod touch flashed once and wont turn back on

I was on the schools wifi getting on youtube and my ipod screen flashed once and then went blank and will not turn on to charge (i had it plugged into the wall and the computer 2 different times for almost 2 hours each and nothing happened), will not turn on when hooked up to the computer when i try to restore it, it will not come on at all for anything
Is it possiblle the school technichians hacked my ipod while i was on their wifi and disabled it?
Ive tried holding the home and power buttons at the same time for 10 seconds. (didn't work)
I tied holding both buttons for 15 seconds and releasing the home button. (didn't work)
And i tried holding both buttons for 2 minutes. (didn't work either)

My ipod is stuck on this black screen, all you can see is the time, the wifi bars and the battery bar, and of course my assestive touch since my ipods home button BROKE. So ive tried turning it off with the lock button, ive tried it with assestive touch, my ipod still takes screen shots and volume works you just cant see my screen and turn it off. My ipod touch 3G overheated and wont turn on at all

So I usually park my car in the garage but the other day I had to leave it out. I left the ipod plugged inside the car forgetting to take it in. It was about 100 degrees outside and the car was parked in the sun all day and all night. The next morning I get in the car and realize i left it out and the heat. I picked it up and it was like there was heat generating from just the screen. Now every time I press on any part of the screen it makes a cracking noise.

First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."
