HT1414 Unknown error 1015
After downloading software and update, i'm having problem using the phone. The phone is in recovery mode, message like unknown error 1015 always pops up when restoring it.
Have you perhaps jailbroken the iPhone?

Has the iPhone been jailbroken at any point or have you had any developer software on the handset? If so then this could be the cause of the issue.
You can try to remove the IPSW file from the computer (or try a known working PC & Network / Create a new user account on the computer and do it in there as it will re-download the IPSW file) and attempt to restore the device again.
Ensure that you've tried this (it's covered in the link) and the other steps in the following article: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1275
If the iPhone is still refusing to restore then you're probably best to try and visit a Genius at a local Apple Store (if you have one).

Im having this problem and I got paniced, tried to update the software on the iPhone( with the newest) & now I cant even restore it, always comes up with this Warning- the iPhone could not be restored, unknown error 1015. Please, advice what to do? Thanks in advance, any help would be appreciated
Type "1015" inot the search abr at the top of this page by "Support" and read the appropriate help articles.

It means you likely hacked/jailbroke your iPhone and now it's a brick.

I have been given an Apple 3G which is in jailbreak. After restoring and updating my phone to get rid of jailbreak the iphone will not accept any updates or restoration. Unknown error 1015. Please help! I am new to all this and want to start using the phone legitimately.
I believe from the situation you describe your iPhone 3g has the iPAD baseband 6.15.00 which is interfering with iTunes. Remember Apple does not allow downgrade of software typically. The current 3g firmware 4.2.1 has a baseband 5.15.04 which is lower than, what I believe your baseband is of 6.15.00. So to install the current 3g firmware 4.2.1 would actually be a baseband downgrade, which iTunes will not allow. So to fix your iPhone you will have to search the Web like diesel vdub said. There are no parts to buy and your iPhone will work again I promise.

Hey guys. My IPhone 3GS is unlocked and i went to update the software and it said that an unknown error has occurred and said it needed to be restored to connect with Itunes. When i got to restore it, it gets about 3/4 of the way done, says an unknown error has occured(1015). I have no clue what to do and all and any help would be amazing.

If you're getting an error 1015 then either it's jailbroken or the computer you're using was used to jailbreak or attempt to jailbreak an iOS device.
If you are NOT getting error 1015, then you are NOT having the "exact same problem".

I have done each and everyone of the steps (advanced and basic) recommended by Apple. Unfortunately, now i cannot even use my IPhone because it seems to not respond. I have turn it off, reset it with the home and main buttom pressed simultaneously. Restore it again and the same error ( unknown error occurred and your IPhone could not be restored).
