HT1414 what really is "other" yellow free space gobbling stuff ?

yellow "other" burns up 1.5gb in 3 months. What is it ? No,really, what is it ?

Contacts, favorites, voicemail, app data, history, etc.
Normally it is less than a GB.  Much more than this indicates corrupt fies.  A restore should resolve.

  • What is the other ( yellow) when you plug

What is the other yellow when you sync your phone to itunes? I takes 4 gbs of storage.

    It can be favorites/recents/etc,
It should be less than 1GB.
More than this indicates corrupt files.  A restore should resolve.

  • What actually happens @Completed filling free space info for database

    Hello,
i see some strange thing with my 15.7 Ase server
Earlier for a very big db of around 1TB the recovery time would be around 15Mins( i mean for the 1TB db to come online).
Now its taking only seconds to come up.
so wanted to check what actually happens in this stage.
Started filling free space info for database 'xxx'
Completed filling free space info for database 'xxx'
The difference is that we have created new server and bcpd the data into it.
    Please can someone explain.
    Thanks

ASE keeps counters in memory of the amount of free space available on devices and segments.  When ASE is shutdown cleanly (aka "politely"), these values are flushed to disk and used to initialize the in-memory counters on reboot.  If ASE is shutdown abruptly, the values have to be recalculated, a process which involves either reading every OAM page in the database or every Allocation page.

  • What is the Other yellow stuff - and how do I get rid of it?

I have .18 audio, .02 photos, .01 apps and .21 OTHER? I dont know what that is or how to get rid of it. I saw where some responses said to go to the back or restore factory settings. My question is on what and how? I am very computer illiterate and getting frustrated! Now it is not much, but I don't want it to cause a problem down the road. Also, if my itouch is a 8G, why does it show only 6.5 GB as the capacity? Thanks for any help!!

To reduce "other" sometimes a restore from backup works but many times a restore to factory defaults is required. I would not be concerned until ti gets to 1 GB though.
The difference between the 8 GB iPod total capacity/storage capacity and 6.5 is due to the iOS taking up some of that difference by a lot of it is du to the difference of how BG is calculated. See:

  • What does the "other" yellow bar consist of?

I have an iPhone 4 that is 8 GB. I barely have enough room for pictures and audio but I'm having an issue with my "other" bar taking up most of my space.  I have done all of the things you can do, such as delete old messages, safari history, and notes, calenders, and so on. I am stuck because I need the space on my phone to continue using it! I have also deleted apps, and most of my photos (even though I didn't want to.) Can someone please help me?

You should be importing all pics taken with the iphone to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera.
Your notes, contacts and calendars should be synced to your computer regularly.
Any itunes purchases made on the iphone should be transferred to your computer regularly.
When you sync your settings are backed up, so make sure you sync before restoring.
First try restoring from your backup.
If that does not reduce "other", then restore as new.

  • HT1414 What media and other data is referred to, which will be erased for update?

Erased data and other media to be erased when updating my ipad 2 with the IOS 6 update.  Not sure what will be erased.  Concerned about erasing some existing media and data.  Any information would help.

You didn't say what version of the iOS you are upgrading from, but I assume that it is less than iOS 5 or you would not be concerned about using iTunes, because you could backup with iCloud and never have to use iTunes.
Also, you can sync multiple devices with one iTunes library and keep all of the content separate. I have an iPod Touch 5th generation and the iPad 3 that I sync with the same iTunes library and each device has different content on it. Your devices do not have to have the same content on ech one.

Since you have never synced the iPad with iTunes, you might want to take a look at this user tip which explains how you can't sync to a "new" computer or hard drive without losing anything.

  • Disk Utility - Erase Free Space-what does it really do?

    Hey Forum,
I am using mac os 10.6.4 on my macbook and i have a doubting question for quite sometimes, what does disk utility erase free space feature really do? Does it gives you more free space? or what? I know it prevents the recovery of deleted files but i want to know what more it does and do not do? Like, now my hdd free space kept increasing and decreasing, by a few 100 mbs or 50mbs etc, so do i erase free space so to solve this problem? Ok, i do not only want to know does it solve the previous problem, but also the questions stated in the whole long paragraph i have wrote. If you know anything related to disk utility's erase free space, feel free to tell me!
Pls help me, I need you guys' help!
    Thank you.
    Regards
    Ala.

Erase free space simply writes zeros over the space occupied by deleted files to prevent data recovery. That's all it does. It does not give you extra disk space.
Your disk space goes up and down a bit because the system creates temporary files and logs which take up space, such as the Safari cache. You can clear these file using a utility like Onyx (which is free)

  • Minimum free space on a hard drive ...

    Hello,
I am trying to estimate the size of a future drive. In order to keep a hard drive functionning as fast as possible, what is the best % of free space it should always have to be able to defragment or run disk utility at their best ?? I was thinking of 33% of free space as a good %.
Is it important to think about disk usage that way ???
    Thanks in advance.
    Robert Lespérance

    Hi, Robert.
The issue of minimal free disk space is addressed in my "Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space" FAQ.
    Good luck!

  • Free Space on Oracle Mount Points

    Hi,
In my production environment,  which is on ECC 5.0 on HPUX and Oracle DB, my mount point for the Oracle DB files has reached 90% plus......
What is the amount of free space that should be available on these mount points at any point of time. Will there be a performance issue in the above case.
Inputs on this will be appreciated.
    Regards
    Alfred D'Souza

    Hello Alfred,
    > What is the amount of free space that should be available on these mount points at any point of time. Will there be a performance issue in the above case.
Personally i try to keep 4 GB free space for each sapdata (for big systems), for smaller i only keep 1 GB.
Performance issues depends on your storage. If you have SAN storage with caches.. performance will be not affected, but if you have local disks it depends on the data striping and the i/o intensive actions.
But in general i say, the performance will be not affected by the free space.. it will only be affacted by the i/o actions and the distributed data over all sapdatas.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • How much free space is necessary on the hard drive?

although the message 'Startup disk is almost full' is coming up, what is the amount of free space required to run 10.4 normally?

    773/3219
    Hi Brian,
This is not an exact, immutable value, but it is usually understood that Mac OS X needs about 10% to 15% free hard drive space.
Now you most probably can count a minimum of 5 GB, in order to run the (about) 4 GB system (Tiger), regardless of the total size of the HD.
    Another useful info:
Depending on your habits and on what you do with your computer, look at the fluctuations of the VM size number in Activity Monitor. It shows quite accurately how much free space the OS needs to "breathe" well.
    In a word: 10-15%.

  • Reassign Shared Distribution Point - Required free space

    Hi All,
I’m working on the migration from SCCM 2007 R3 to SCCM 2012 R2 CU1 for our customer and currently I would to reassign our SCCM 2007 Secondary Sites to SCCM 2012 Distribution Points.
The “Reassign Shared Distribution Point Wizard” states that I need approximately twice the space of required content for the conversion:
... but in the following Technet article I read that the conversion requires available free disk space equal to the size of the largest package that is stored on the distribution point (see the extract below):
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg712275.aspx
To upgrade a distribution point from within the Configuration Manager console, the Configuration Manager 2007 site system server must meet the following conditions:
The      distribution point configuration and location must be eligible for      upgrade.
The      distribution point computer must have sufficient disk space for the      content to be converted from the
Configuration Manager 2007 content      storage format to the single instance store format. For      System Center 2012 Configuration Manager with no service      pack, this conversion
requires available free disk space equal to two      times the size of the existing data on the distribution point.
Beginning with      System Center 2012 Configuration Manager SP1 and      System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager, this conversion requires
available free disk space equal to the size of the largest package that is      stored on the distribution point.
Considering that the environment version is SCCM 2012 R2 CU1 (version: 5.0.7958.1203)
I do not know if it is
better to trust to MS article or to the Reassign DP Wizard statement. Is it really needed
all that free space in my DP in order to complete the migration?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks a lot.
    Andrea

In my experience with R2 migrations you do not need double the space as was the case with RTM version.

  • I thought I was creating free space by erasing free space using disk utility but what I really did was literally ERASE MY FREE SPACE on my Macbook Pro 10.8.4 and all I want to know is what to do to recover my free space?

When I click on ABOUT THIS MAC and then on STORAGE it shows that I have like 700 gb of "OTHER" in yellow and all I want is for the yellow to disappear and have all my free space again! please someone help me
    <Edited by Host>

Your free space hasn't gone anywhere. This is simply the initial result of the process. However, your free space should be there once you need to use it.
