HT1414 where do you request that an iphone be unlocked?
I bought a second-hand iPhone 4 that is locked with a certain carrier that is not my regular carrier. I tried the easiest route: I plugged it into my Mac and opened iTunes... hoping for a miracle that didn't happen. What I got was a message suggesting that I insert a SIM card from a supported carrier or "request that the phone be unlocked." This evidently indicates that it is perfectly lawful to unlock a phone that one has rightfully acquired from its previous owner. Can I then go up to his carrier and request that they release the phone so I can take my business elsewhere?
The carrier reserves the right to set their own terms for unlocking phones, assuming the offer unlocking (not all do). In the U.S. this normally requires that you already be a customer in good standing. All you can do is contact them to see if you qualify. If not, you'll either have to return it or sell it to someone else who can use it.

That means that the phone is locked to a carrier other than the one you are trying to use.

Your iPhone was hacked or jailbroken before and through the update it locks back to the original carrier. Only the original carrier can unlock the iPhone. You have to contact them and find out what the procedure you needs to follow.

you say the iPhone originally was on contract with Orange UK. You will have
to work with Orange UK to get the iPhone unlocked. -

It's locked to a carrier other than the one you're trying to use. Either sign up for cellular service with the carrier it's locked to, or contact them to see if you can have it unlocked to that you can use the carrier of your choice.

Ah...you need to get a sim card from the carrier your phone is locked to. That's what that message means.

Buy a new one. It sounds like it was hacked to unlock it and it has been bricked by the update.

Im tying to unlock an Iphone 4.
the celular company make it by its system, and send me an E mail with the instructions to finsh the process by myself, throug itunes.
I did every step, and at the end appers a message telling that my Iphone is unlocked.
but it does not work with other celular company sim card.
It only works with the original sim Card company.

sometimes appears a message informing that the SIM card is locked with a PIN. That i must instal the last itunes version and connect it again.

I have done a lot of restores to the Iphone, and resets also.
I;ve done holding both buttons as you sugested, but there is no signal appearing.
I am in Uruguay, South America and the original company is Movistar ( Telefonica) and the new sim card is from ANTEL ( the officail and biggest company in my country).
I don;t knoe what todo.
I have been trying for more than one mont.
I have gone several times to both companies. Aldo two times to Apple uruguay, and nobody can help me. -
