You are looking at the Store drop-down menu ? If you are using a PC with iTunes 11 and the menus aren't showing then control-B should get them to show. If you are using a Mac then it should be at the top of your Mac's screen.

Neither, authorising and deauthorising only applies to computers, not to iOS devices (iPads, iPhones and ipod Touches).
You can log out of your daughter's account on it by tapping on the id in Settings > Store (Settings > iTunes & App Stores if the iPad is on iOS 6+) and you can then login with your account (assuming that you have separate accounts). Any content that your daughter bought/downloaded will remain tied to her account, so only her account will be able to download updates to her apps.

If the computer's running Mac OS X, move the cursor to the very top of the computer's screen, click on Store, and choose Authorize this Computer.

I recommend an external drive to maintain your music. All your purchases are held in iCloud...so redownloading should be easy. Also, Home sharing is a great way to transfer to a new computer, but in the case of hard drive failure your options are limited. Home sharing is specifically for transferring to another pc. Good luck!

I used Terminal to change the permissions on the folder in question. I followed the instructions in this article:
iTunes: Missing folder or incorrect permissions may prevent authorization
In my case, the folder was there, so I needed the command to change permissions on the folder, not to create one. I was hesitant to use Terminal b/c I know that if I made an error I could wipe out my hard drive or render my computer unusable. So to be SURE I didn't make an error, I carefully copied the command from that page and *pasted* it into Terminal. Also, before I could do anything in Terminal, I had to go change my admin password (it had been a blank password before and that's not acceptable for making changes in Terminal). I was just super careful when entering my password or doing anything else while Terminal was open (making sure I didn't accidently hit the spacebar or another key, etc.) And it fixed the problem right away.
What was confusing for me was that the iTunes error message said to change permissions in the FINDER, which is what I was trying to do. It didn't mention Terminal. What would really be helpful is if Apple included a link to a page like this in their error message.

You cannot buy anything from the iTunes Store until you authorize the computer. Are you unable to authorize it? If so see the following:

In iTunes you use the Authorize This Computer or De-authorize This Computer option under the Store menu in iTunes' menubar. For Windows use the ALT-S keys to access it. Or turn on Windows 7 and 8 iTunes menus: iTunes- Turning on iTunes menus in Windows 8 and 7.

This is not a big problem as you can have up to five authorised devices.
However, if this is a problem you can go to Store, View my Account,
Deauthorize All
Then you will have to authorize your computer again.
Hopefully the number will stay as 1.
