Found a resolution. Got a FREE introductory offer from the net and used it to download my music to my computer and then could drag over to iTunes.

If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and it won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection (Yamipod has already been mentioned above), you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. I understand that you have music on your iPod that you would like to transfer into your iTunes library on your Mac.
If those songs you wish to transfer were purchased, there are two different ways you can accomplish this. The first way, which does not even require you connecting your iPod to the computer, would be to re-download them from iTunes in the Cloud directly to your iTunes library. Directly connecting your iPod to your Mac to transfer purchases is an option as well. Instructions for both methods of gathering your past purchases in your iTunes library on your Mac are available in the attached article.

AlexCarey, I've been having issues purchasing recently and place a number of calls to the support team. On Oct. 5th, and on my own decision, I went into my itunes profile and re-entered my credit card expiration date and security code. (Notice, it is not displayed for safety measures.) Today, I received an email from Apple support verifying if I made changes made to my account. For the heck of it, I logged back into itunes; click "Buy". It's working again after three days of failure. However, diagnosis still displays "Secure link to itunes store failed". Very confusing state of affairs, lately. See my post on "Itunes dilemma"

Does anyone have suggestions for a legitimate file extracting program? I need to get music off my old IPod (the ITunes it's on is on an old computer that no longer works) and onto my new computer so I can download it to my new IPod.

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.

What I'd like to do now is transfer all the music off the iPod to my new iPhone but I can't figure out how. I downloaded iTunes and plugged in my iPod and iPhone but it hasn't seemed to help.

Assume you can't sync the iPad as you are on Tiger with old iTunes version.

Basically my old computer broke and my iphone was synced with that. So I've got a new computer and when I try to sync it says that it's already synced with another computer and needs to erase my iphone to sync with the library

and got to the part where it advised to: For iTunes purchases you can copy them back into iTunes by choosing File -> Transfer Purchases.
However, when I try to do that it informs me I'm not authorised for this computer, which I am. I've de-authorised all computers, and re-authorised just one, the one I'm using; but still the error remains.
I'm completely baffled, what do you suggest I do?

Work through Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. You should back up the device, transfer purchases, rescue all media that it is possible to recover, playlists & stats too if you want them, create dummy contacts and appointments if needed, then restore the device from the backup. You'll be reloading the apps from the library and the app data from the backup. You can tweak the media sync selections once the backup has been restored.
