HT1420 what if we don't have a mac or apple computer

They tell us what to do if we have an apple or mac but not for a pc. How do we authorize and deauthorize computers with a pc?

Read the instructions again in the article you're referencing, it is the same for Mac and PC.

  • I currently have the Mac OS X v10.5.8 and want to get the new operating system but I don't know how to do it. I don't have the Mac App Store and can't get it because of my version. What do I do?

I currently have the Mac OS X v10.5.8 and want to get the new operating system but I don't know how to do it. I don't have the Mac App Store and can't get it because of my version. What do I do?

The Early 2006 model 1,1 Core Duo can only run a maximum of 10.6 Snow Leopard. The models Late 2006 Core 2 Duos 2,1 through Early 2008 4,1 can only run a maximum of 10.7 Lion. The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody through the Mid 2010 White Unibody model 7,1 can run 10.8 Mountain Lion.
To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
The Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD should still be available from Apple for $20. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775 to purchase it. It may still be in the Legacy Products list.
If they no longer have any in stock you will have to buy it from eBay or Apple resellers that still have stock. But you will have to pay a premium since the DVDs are no longer being made. Snow Leopard DVDs are already up to $100 on Amazon.

Once you are at 10.6.8 Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store.  The price is still $29. You must have at least a model 2,1 MacBook.
Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

What if i don't have any credit card?

There are instructions on this page for how to create a new account without giving credit card details (the instructions won't work with existing accounts) : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534
That should allow you to download free items. If you want paid-for items then do any other payment options appear on the payment details screen, and/or are iTunes gift cards available in your country (they are country-specific so you won't be able to use cards from another country) ?

Create a NEW account using these instructions. Make sure you follow the instructions. Many do not and if you do not you will not get the None option. You must use an email address that you have not used with Apple before.

  • What if users don't have quicktime?

I have this website where I show quicktime files. What if users don't have quicktime? It shows a broken file as a graphic. What can I do to make it more visually appealing to visitors? I don't want to show them a broken file as a graphic.

I have a similar challenge with QuickTime and would like to respond. My web site (www.sparkpresentations.com) is packed with QuickTime files, and most of my visitors are having problems (and all use Windows). Either they have QT but the videos load and play painfully slowly on their PC, or they don't have QT and don't realize it, but the videos won't load at all. This despite my note on every web page about QuickTime with a link to Apple's free download page, which despite its prominent placement, many people don't even notice. And I know my QT files are set properly for quick play, and work great for me in Safari.
As unfair and sad as it is, the bottom line for me is that most visitors don't have QuickTime, don't know it, and don't know what to do about it, even if it's easy and free. They just know the video won't play. Moreover, many people CAN'T download QuickTime because they work in offices behind firewalls and are prohibited from downloading software to their company-owned computers.
One good workaround is to post all your videos on your own YouTube channel, which is free and easy, and link to it from your site, and I did this. So at least you can say "Can't see my videos? View them here instead!"
But I think for those of us who need our web site videos to "just work" for everyone, the only real solution is to convert them to Flash, which is what I'm now looking into.
So, here come my questions: Anyone know how to do it? I bought Flix Standard and it seems to work, but has way too many options for file type (SWF vs. FLV), file size, bit rate, etc. that I don't understand, and of course no help in navigating them. Plus, I can't open the videos on my Mac to see how they look.
Is there a site anywhere that can give me some simple guidance on the best settings to simply convert my QT videos to Flash for posting on my web site? Can someone walk me through this? I would think this is a very common problem but can't find much help.
    Thanks -
    andy
