HT1423 Adding memory

Running out of memory on my IMac 8,1 (~2008) so what is the best way to add more memory to my 320 GB capacity?

You are mixing Hard Drive Space with RAM (random access memory). If you need a bigger Hard Drive my suggestion would be to get a Firewire 800 cradle with a removable bare drive so you could swap out drives for your own convenience. OWC or Crucial have External Drives at reasonable prices and you should have a backup strategy that includes at least one bootable clone of your existing system drive. When you get your drive you can move your pictures, songs, movies and other large files off your internal harddrive and that way your system would be happier with more space to work in. If you want more RAM then both of the vendors I suggested have guaranteed compatible RAM and your system can be upgraded to 6GB which will improve performance and allow more Apps to be open simultaneously.

I want to add memory to my iMac and when using the built in memory selection it displayed  the following...when i searched for the PC3-10600 meeting the criteria listed all that came up was HP products...is this correct?  Will this work?  Just want to double check before I purchase more memory.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

  • I have a macbook 4.1 with osx10.6.8 and just added memory (2gig) so I could sync my new Ipome and Ipad.  and Ipad. Now I'm told I need to upgrade my operating system. The apple store gave me conflicting instructions. Any suggestions? Thanks

I have a macbook 4.1 with osx10.6.8 and just added memory (2gig) so I could sync my new IPhone and Ipad. Now I'm told at the apple store that I need to upgrade my operationg system. They said they couldn't help and gave me conflicting advice about what to do. Any ideas? Thanks you!

There are three models of MacBook that comprise the 'macbook 4.1' category, and each of them a little different; however other than 'macbook 4.1' the other thing they have in common is they all are considered Early 2008. Two are white, one black, polycarbonate case, Core2Duo 2.1GHz, 2.4GHz white, 2.4GHz black.
So if you can determine which one, if any of these, is the model build year and spec you have, that would be handy. Did you tell whoever you spoke to the serial number of your computer, so they'd know by looking up the specs to see what the supported maximum RAM upgrade capacity was, and other minimum requirements to make any upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6.8 at all?
If you have the serial number you can do a lookup to 'indentify by serial number' online, and use that information to determine if the computer needs even more RAM to take it past the minimum for Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and then get it ready to upgrade (via paid download from App Store, Snow Leopard gets you that far) and see what the next supported OS X full upgrade would be for the hardware limitations on that old MacBook.
If your MacBook IS a 4.1 build, the highest OS X it could run if it has the 2.4GHz cpu, is Lion 10.7.5. That would be an upgrade from the App store, available to OS X 10.6.8+ computers that access it online. And I kind of doubt how supported a newest iphone etc may be in lion.
everymac.com has a fair amount of information across many years of Apple computing hardware...
Here's the three MacBooks that share the 4.1 designation; first shipped with as much as 1GB RAM upgrade and the other two only a 2GB RAM*, (one white/one black color) according to this information...
    • MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 2.1 13" (White-08) 2.1 GHz Core 2 Duo (T8100)
    • MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 2.4 13" (White-08) 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo (T8300)

*But according to MacTracker (free: download database) http://mactracker.ca
these MacBooks can use more RAM in aftermarket specs as much as:
    Maximum Memory
6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots

The Apple? store or whoever you talked, to may have been as accurate as they could be without further research. Could be you may have a newer or older MacBook, which would change whatever later OS X it could run past 10.6.8. And to go past Snow Leopard, you need to download the last bits for 10.6.x to be able to go and get any later upgrade. The ones that may let a newest iphone or ipad work with it, are past SL10.6.8
Anyway, as you further verify the model build year and configuration specifications, report back.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Laserjet 6p added memory unknown???

I have a 6P and it has an installed memory card on one of the 3 available memory slots.I can not tell what the size of the memory card is and called the manufacturer who said that its model number is no longer available in their database. I held down the printer button and got the LaserJet 6P printed page but it says "PLC6 MEt Memory Enhancement technology 2 mbytes".   I believe that is the internal installed memory and doesn't include the added memory card. Is there anyway I can determine the size of this added memory card? Also, when I print PDF files, it takes a very long time for each page to print...maybe a minute per page. If I switch to Raster, then the pages print normally.  Any ideas on this issue as it only happens with PDF files that I have to print. Win7 Ultimate  64bit. using the Win7 print driver for HP LaserJet 6p.

Thanks for the additional info. As far as being confused...the only two options I have in the graphic mode is HP_GL/2 or Raster so I don't know why they are on my LaserJet if they are not suppose to be.I'm not sure what driver I am using...when I print out the test page it says PCL6 so I guess that is the driver installed. There is no other place that tells me that I can find.  When I go to HP support there doesn't appear to be a way to get PCL5 as it refers me to Windows for printer drivers on my model.I guess I'll just have to remember to switch to Raster each time I do a PDF file. Thanks for all your help.

  • Added Memory, but not showing up in System Profilier

I have an iBook G4 1.2Ghz/12-inch screen laptop. Bus speed 133 MHz. It has 256 MB built-in memory. I added a stick of 512 that is appropriate for this computer. (PC 2100) It is seated correctly, and the clips are in place.
However, when I go to the System Profiler, it still only shows my Built-In Memory, and shows that the DIMM1/J7 Memory slot is Empty.
Is there something I need to do to get my computer to recognize the added hardware?
The odd thing is, my computer really does seem to be using the added memory, as I can now have multiple applications open without slowing or freezing.
    Thanks,
    Sonya

You are correct. When the Mac starts up it checks for RAM, no configuration needed on your part. I would suggest taking the chip out and putting it back in to make certain it's pushed in correctly. It should actually "snap" or "click" softly into place.

  • Upgrade to 10.4.11 (from 10.3) & adding memory.

I was wondering if anyone could/can help. I recently upgraded my OS and added memory to my woefully out of date G4. For some reason I now cannot see an external harddrive (firewire) nor can I see my Ibot webcam. When I go to my Hardwear Overview and click on Firewire: nothing appears.
    Here's my system info:

    Machine Model: PowerMac3,5
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 800 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
    Memory: 1.5 GB
    Bus Speed: 133 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.3.3f2
Is it possible that the upgrade/additional screwed up my firewire capabilities? If yes, what do I do to fix it?
    Here's hoping someone can help.

  • I added memory to my MacBook Pro (now 4gb) and upgraded to Lion. Now my iphone 4 won't sync-gets stuck at stage 7 of 8 on importing photos. My iphoto is'09 version 8.1.2

I recently added memory to my MacBook Pro so I could upgrade to Lion and use the cloud for my contact list. It's been a bit of a mess, since I use Entourage as my email program.  The REAL problem I'm having now is that my iPhone 4 now won't sync.  iTunes "quits unexpectedly" at stage 7 (of 8) in the syncing process, where it says it's importing photos.  My iPhoto is '09, version 8.1.2   Is this not compatible with Lion?

I have the same problem. I'm suspecting a corrupt photo, but the logs don't give me a clue. Or maybe this version of iTunes needs some further tuning.

  • Added memory

I would like to have any info you guys can give on adding memory to Set top box. Am I looking for a seats hard drive? How many gigs of memory are needed or available for this addition? Any info would be appreciated

On my recent post>>>I meant to say I want to add an external hard drive and what I've read is, My Motorola HD DVR QIP 7216 1 is supposed to be compatible with an eSata hard drive. Is this correct? I've looked in the back of my STB and it has a slot for a Sata connection. Is this the same as eSata? If anyone can give me some info I'd appreciate it. Also...how difficult is it to configure?

  • When adding memory does slot matter

I just picked up a gig of RAM to add to the 512 MB that came with my powerbook. I was wondering if it made a difference as to which slot the 1GB or 512MB was in. Which configuration works best? Thanks for any help.

    No

  • Adding memory of different sizes

I have a Mac Pro 8 core running with two 1GB memory sticks. I'd like to add additional memory. I'm looking at adding 4x2GB memory sticks. Is there any reason why I couldn't install the 2GB sticks and leave the 1GB sticks in the system for a total of 10GB of RAM? Some systems perform better if all the memory is of the same size and I'm not sure if that holds true for Mac hardware. This is my first Mac and my first memory upgrade so I wanted to make sure before I purchased anything. Right now, all I'm using the system for is Final Cut Studio 2.

You are suppose to move Riser B / DIMM 1 up to Riser A DIMM slot 2.

  • Adding memory modules...

I am currently running leopard on a 1st generation Mac pro with 4GB of ram from ramjet.com. I would like to add more ram to to it and am a little confused. To get maximum performace, I unerstand I fill all the memory slots. I am thinking about adding 2x2GB modules (replacing 2x512MB). Will this be ok? to have 7GB of RAM? will this still take advantage of the 256 bit addressing? Thanks.
    John

In order to take advantage of quad-channel interleaving you must install RAM in equal-sized quads, e.g., four 1 GB DIMMs, four 512 MB DIMMS, four 2 GB DIMMs. Having four modules of differing sizes does not do the trick, although you must install RAM at least in equal-sized pairs.
I assume you currently have two 512 GB DIMMs and two 1 GB DIMMs giving a total of 3 GBs. You could replace the 512 MB DIMMs with two additional 1 GB DIMMs giving you a total of 4 GBs as an installed quad of equal-sized DIMMs. You can then populate that other riser with four more DIMMs of equal size. You could install four 512 MB DIMMs (thus using the two you already have) giving you another 2 GBs for a total of 6 GBs.
    Get the picture?

  • [865PE NEO2 PFISR] Won't boot with added memory

Recently I upgraded a few items on my PC which has been running fine for 18 months or so. I changed out the video card and bought double the memory of the same brand and type it had in it. I went from 1gig (2 sticks) and added two more sticks. But now it won't boot. The power is on but no output whatsoever.
I RMA'd the memory thinking that might be the problem but it's the same with the new set. I tried all sorts of memory/slot combos. Basically, the new memory works fine if you swap it out in bank A with the old stuff. That's how it's running right now, so I know all of the sticks are good. I can take a third and put it in either slot bank B and it'll boot, but obviously not run properly. But any combination of these four sticks and the system won't boot!
    Please help!
    I'm running this system:
    Win XP (SP1 I believe)
    865PE NEO2 PFISR
    P4/3.0CGHz, 800M 478P/512K HT
    DDR Corsair 512MB X4 (400)
Dual 80gb samsung HDs running SATA
    Sapphire X800GTO 256M video card
    Antec Sonata case
    TruePower 380Watt ATX12V

What brand, model, and speed are the RAM sticks. Did you check your Test Report booklet which came with the mobo. If you can't find it, you can go to the MSI website and look for your MOBO and get the test report that way. Some brands/models will that have been tested are shown in the report to be okay in all 4 slots, some only test okay in 2 or 3. Check this report and if it is one of the brands/model/speed tested you will see how it fared. It may well be you the MOBO doesn't like your RAM in 3 or 4 slots.
Maybe I missed it, but did you try each slot with only one stick at a time? You may also have a bad RAM slot.

  • Powermac flashing status light error and adding memory boards

I bought a used Powermac G5. So far it won't boot, there is no image being delivered to the monitor, and the fan revs like a vacuum cleaner.  At first the status light gave series of 3 flashing lights which the online manual (I don't have the specific manual for this machine) says is incorrect memory board or similar message. However, last time I turned on the Powermac the status light now gives single flashes which diagnostic meaning is not even mentioned in the online manual I am using. Does anyone know what single flashes mean? As far as the memory boards are concerned, what is in there now are: Apple memory module M9296G/A (Samsung PC3200U 30331 0413 256MB DDR CL3) in both inner slots, and Hynix PC3200U 30330 0411 256MB DDR 400Mhz CL3 in both second to inner slots. Are these the correct boards? I have on hand 2 other boards from a broken iMac G5. They are Edge Tech 1GB 5380601-40. Can these iMac boards be added to what is in the Powermac or substituted for two of the existing matched boards if they are the wrong type for the Powermac? Both the Powermac and the iMac run Leopard OS. I have also ordered a new battery for the Powermac. The existing battery is dead. Could that cause flashing status light? Thanks.

  • Added memory but....

    Hello Everyone,
I am very new to Mac so please be patient on how I explain things. First I want to say how much I love my Power Mac G5. I love the way the power Mac G5 looks and the way Mac OS 10.4 runs!
However, I think i may have a slight problem. I bought the computer used off ebay with a 22-inch wide screen monitor. Everything works great but I thought since it came with a ton of programs and only 1gig of ram I would add more.
Yesterday I went to Compusa and bought 2 512DDR PC3200 memory chips. Well thinking this would help speed up my computer. It seem to have no effect. So I decided to do a little searching to see if anything was hogging up resources.
I opened Activity monitor and found a program called Virex that was taking up like 80% of the processor resources. After doing some research I download a program that uninstalled Virex.
Thinking now everything should run very smooth. It almost seems to run worse after uninstalling the Virex and adding the memory. The harddrive is working much more and I noticed the fans kick higher and lower quite a bit, just from surfing the web and IM.
As of right now Activity Monitor reads
    CPU
    % User 8.00
    % System 6.00
    % Nice 0.00
    % idle 86.00
    Memory
    Wired 141.43 MB
    Active 241.09 MB
    Inactive 500.72 MB
    Used 883.72 MB
    Free 1.14GB
    Disk
    Reads in: 23437
    Writes out: 10558
    Data read 556.02 MB
    Data Written 244.77 MB
Would some kinda disk defragmenting help with speeding things up? I think when I checked disk warrior it said something like 30% was fragmented.
Anyway please give me any info you can!
    Thanks much!
    Mike

Thanks everyone for the reply. Sorry I was in Vegas all last week and was really unable to reply. I have ordered a Mac OSX DVD set brand new for $67.00.
I wanted to just update everyone on a new issue LOL. This morning I used the G5. Everything was going good; I was using Yahoo IM, Netscape, & itost (I think it is called). Anyway, I got the Kernel panic screen. Where everything locks up and goes gray. Then it tells you to reboot. Well I held down the power button. The system shut down, when I started the system back up. It went to the bootup screen with the white back ground, gray apple logo, and a spinning progress bar. But it does nothing after that; I tried again and again but it just sits there. I hear the hard drive click a few times but that’s it. If I let it sit long enough it will switch to a blue background with progress bar. Then from there it will just be a blue background and let me move the mouse. But there are no programs or anything for that matter.
Really strange, could this be a much bigger issue like a bad hard drive?
    Thanks
    Mike

What good did it do me to add the extra GB's?
There are two types of memory in your machine (well, more really, but only two we care about at the moment).
They are disk-based storage and random access memory (RAM). Both are measured in GB which may add to the confusion.
The disk-based storage is used for long-term data - applications, documents you create, log files, etc. - anything that you need to retain after the machine is turned off.
The RAM is used for real-time data access. It's much, much faster than disk-based storage but it requires constant power and therefore is erased when you turn the machine off. This memory is used for all the applications you're using right now, the documents you're creating, and any processing that the OS is doing.
For example you may have many gigabytes of photos on your machine, but you're not actually using them all the time. If you open one of the photos, the OS loads the appropriate application into RAM, then the application loads the appropriate photo into RAM and displays it on screen. Any edits you make to the photo also happen in RAM until you hit Save, at which point the data is copied back to the disk.
More RAM is certainly useful - it allows you to do more with your machine since it can load more data into memory at once, but that isn't your problem here.
To use a car analogy, think of the disk as being the trunk of your car and the RAM as being the fuel tank - you've put a bigger fuel tank on your car when what you really need is more trunk space to carry all your gear.
You either need to delete some data you don't need (c.f. empty the trunk), replace the hard drive with a bigger trunk (c.f. take out the back seats), or get a secondary drive you can move the data to (c.f. get a trailer).
If you want to get a better picture of where your data is going, get a copy of Onmi Disk Sweeper. It can analyse your disk and identify unusual disk patterns (like the log files I was expecting). You do, of course, need sufficient disk space to be able to download and install the application.
