HT1423 iMac memory upgrade!

I have a 21.5 inch iMac (mid 2011) and according to apples support I can only upgrade to 4x4Gb RAM. I have 2x4 + 2x8 and that works fine?! I need to upgrade to 4x8Gb. What's the deal?

According to MacTracker, your machine has these specs. Note that Apple says only 16 GB supported, but they claim it'll work w/32 GB, so install them and see what happens.
Maximum Memory
32 GB (Actual) 16 GB (Apple)
Memory Slots
4 - 204-pin PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM

  • HT1423 after memory upgrade iMac crashes

I upgraded the memory on my iMac 21.5 mid 2010 in accordance with the instructions and now it continues to reboot and after a while the screen turns black and a beeping sounds occurs. Suggestions to resolve this are welcome.

The specs are correct and have used Corsair Mac memory. Have used this brand also to upgrade another iMac and a Macbook Pro
So have I, my Early Core Duo has had 2 1GB PC2- 5300 667MHz Corsair modules in it for years and has never had a problem.
If you are sure that the modules a fully seated in the slots, then the only conclusion is that there is something wrong with that RAM.

  • HT1423 iMac Memory does not work?

iMac (Mid 2007)  Removed the original IGB Ram replaced with 2 new PNY DDR2 PC2-5300 667MHz Memory.  iMac runs but screen is blank and no start up sound of any kind.  Held down the start button, machine stopped.  Removed new ram, installed old 1GB ram and machine works normally.  Tried with only one 2GB Memory and got same result.  What did I do wrong??

    I'm with stedman1
I've seen where PNY say's there OPTIMA RAM is compatible with everything from 400, 533 and 667 MHz bus speeds or 667 and 800 MHz bus speeds, in both there Spec's and on there packiging.
    Example: > PNY OPTIMA 2GB DDR2 667 MHz PC2-5300 Notebook / Laptop
    say's it's
    Compatible with DDR2 PC2-5300 (667 MHz Bus Speed), DDR2 PC2-4200 (533 MHz Bus Speed), DDR2 PC2-3200 (400 MHz Bus Speed)

  • Memory upgrade on iMac G3 700, help with system crashes

I tried to do a memory upgrade on my iMac, so I bought two kingston 256 MB PC133 modules, but none will work, the system starts, but hangs in about two minutes after loading the desktop. I went back to use the older memory module wich is an spectek, but I need the upgrade, any ideas?
    Thanks!
    FedericoMG.
Ps: Sorry about my english... I'm from Argentina... :-P

    Hi Federicomg
The iMac 700 G3 should have been supplied with 1 stick of 256mb ram. However which is the correct type i am not sure as the Apple specifications for this model state PC100 whereas my iMac G3 700 graphite was supplied with 256 MB PC133-333 SDRAM
    http://support.apple.com/specs/imac/iMacSummer2001.html
Apple profiler from my iMac this is the original supplied RAM from Apple:-
    DIMM0/J13: Size: 256 MB
    Type: SDRAM
    Speed: PC133-333
    1) I would re-instal the original ram and open system profiler to see what type the ram is.
    2) Keeping the original stick in place add another stick of the new ram and look again in profiler to see if its recognised and again try the second stick to see if there's a problem with one of the sticks.
I am currently running my iMac with a small upgrade of RAM and the additional RAM is 128MB of PC100 and i have noticed the performance improvement since adding the PC100 so it's working and i have suffered no ill effects doing this..

  • Memory Upgrade: 27" iMac, late 2009

    Hey everyone,
Quite late to the game, but definitely should upgrade my imac's memory from the standard 4gb - However my mac doesn't show up in the shopping aides some of the manufacturers have on their homepages, so the subject is a bit shady.
Am I still able to track down the working hardware for this particular computer?
If so, any suggestions? Would these do?
    Thanks!

I also have a late 2009 27" iMac installed 16 gigs of crucial memory, I ordered the mid 27" iMac memory running at Speed: 1333 MHz been running them without a problem for two an half years.
Here is the link. http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-memory-for/Apple/imac-2*8ghz-intel-quad -core-i5-%2827-inch---ddr3%29-mid-2010
I have Yosemite install running smooth with no issue. Now I'm waiting for Kodak printer driver update.

  • Memory upgrade on a early 2008 iMac

    Hi, I have a early 2008 24" iMac with 2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
I have read conflicting information here vs. Apple support site and would just like some advise and possibly answers from someone who has my computer that has done a succesful upgrade.  I would obviously like to upgrade as high as I can.  Apple says the Max I can have is 4 GB, but I have read that the real size is 6 GB.  Which is it?
Also, does anyone know of a specifc Ram that wont break the bank but is still good?
    Thanks!

I think you can use 6GB on that machine.

  • Memory upgrade is not available for my iMac (2009 Fall edition). Where else can I purchase this?!

Apparently, Apple does not have the memory upgrades for my older iMac available. Does anyone know where else I can acquire this? with all the new OS upgrades, my beloved machine is starting to get really slow.

If there is a micro center store in your area, they carry crucil memory for the mac  , BUT make sure you get or order the correct memory  (crucial will have the specs or check your about this mac will also tally what memory you have now)

  • I have a iMAC(got it in less than 2 months ago), can I change the memory(upgrade it from 4 GB to 8GB) myself? I mean I need to open the screws and exchange the memory chips. Does it cancel the guarantee?

No, unless you break something or install the wrong RAM, new RAM is not covered by warranty/AppleCare of course.

  • Memory upgrade not working

I ordered 8GB memory for my imac mid-2011 model.
I then tried to install and all I'm getting is three beeps telling me there's something wrong with my memory.
I've tried all configurations but can't get the 2x4gb modules to work.
I've had to stay with only the original 2x2gb ones it came with.
    Can anyone please help.
The only difference, besides the size, between the two modules is that on the 4gb ones is says PC3-10600S-9-10-F2 and the 2gb ones say all the same except instead of F2 at the end it's F1.
    Cheers.

Which would seem to suggest that you may (unusually) have a doubtful memory module.   Less unusually, you would have paid over the top for it.

  • I can't set up iCloud drive on my iMac after upgrading to Yosemite

I can't set up iCloud drive on my iMac after upgrading to Yosemite - iPhone and iPad are updated but both say my iMac isn't (even though it is running Yosemite).
My iMac is OS X Yosemite 10.10 (14A389), memory is 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 and storage capacity is 273.64 free of 999.35 GB.
When i go to System Preferences and click on iCloud. The iCloud Drive section is greyed out and says setting up and a spinning pin wheel. It stays like this the whole time. I have tried restarting the computer. i amanita sure what else to do to make it work. Any suggestion would be great.

I found another way to correct this...
    1)  Select Message, then go to Preferences,
    2)  a window will appear with 3 options, General, Accounts, Audio Video, don't be surprised when you see a video of yourself, your camera just turned on.
    3) Select Accounts (you may have several here)
    4) Select the account that has "iMessage" under the account name.  This may likely be your Apple ID  ****@me.com
    5) Look at what is checked under the "You can be reached for messages at:"
    6) Select the one account (or more if you like) and deselect the others
    7) Close the window and the problem goes away.
I'm not longer getting my sons iMessages.

  • Has anyone experience iMac memory issues with One Drive (previously Sky Drive) - uses 5GB of my 8GB memory!

I recently started experiencing memory issues with my iMac due to One Drive using up to 5GB of my iMac memory (total of 8GB). Every time I start up my iMac Activity Monitor shows One Drive uses around 4-5Gb of the internal memory for no reason. Previously Onde Drive seemed to work fine, it's only since about 2 weeks I notice this. It's really annoying as the iMac freezes up regulalrly and I need One Drive to synchronise my files across different devices.
Has anyone experienced this too and are there any known fixes?

Yes this is happening to me too, since the last upgrade. Eventually MacOS starts insisting I "Force Quit" all my applications as I have run out of application memory.
OneDrive doesn't appear in that list because it's not an application... but Activity Monotor clearly shows it's the culprit, taking up 5GB+ of RAM.
I've raised the issue on Microsoft's forums:

  • IMac (333Mhz) - Upgrading To OSX

My Mum has a an IMac - Slot Loading 333Mhz which has OS9 (with all the updates) on it...
She would like to upgrade to OSX. Could anyone please tell me what the basic requirements are for doing this please & which OSX she can upgrade to???
As I understand it she will need to upgrade her memory (she thinks she only has 64 or 128MB's at present) to 256MB's or to to 512MB's... Is it worth upgrading to 512 as this would mean that someone would need to gain access to the second memory slot which is behind some circuitry?
She only uses the machine for surfing, emailing & word processing so I would hope that there is enough free disk space...
Would she need to have an external DVD drive to load the latest OSX & am I right in thinking that her machine would need a Firmwire Update?
Are there any other things to know / look out for??
    Many, many thanks

    Hi,
Well here's the URL for the firmware upgrade for this machine:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60384
You'll need at least 256 to run Panther properly (Apple says 128 but I feel that's pushing it). Panther can be had on CDs as can Tiger but Tiger will not run on this machine without Ex Post Facto. I would install 10.3.2 and update online to 10.3.9.
You'll need to pull the logic tray to install the memory upgrade. Check the PRAM battery as long as you're there.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=43012
Good luck with your Mum's computer. I set mine up with the same model and now I'm moving her from dial up to cable modem and a iMac 400 with 10.3.9.

  • Indigo 400mhz memory upgrade

Can anyone tell me the best way to upgrade my little iMacs memory I wasn't sure if an internal upgarde or a new external hardrive would be better - am utter ludite - sorry!
    Indigo 400MHZ   Mac OS X (10.4.1)   iMac early 2001

Hello Lulu_uk and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Firstly lets clarify exactly what you need:
More storage space - i.e. hard disk
    More memory - i.e. RAM.
It's best not to refer to hard disk storage as memory depsite the fact they are both measured in Mb/Gb because they do different things.
I suspect you are refering to the latter though.
As you are a self confessed ludite the easiest option (not the cheapest) is to buy an External Hard Drive. Now the iMacs between 233MHz - 1GHz only have USB1.1 - which at 12Mbps is really too slow for hard disk use. If you went in to PC World on your local retail park they'd probably sell you a USB drive.
Luckily the ≥400MHz iMacs have Firewire which at 400Mbps is the best option for an external drive. Just to confirm this table reports that the Early 2001 Indigo does have Firewire.
The other major advantage of Firewire is that you can boot your iMac from it (USB drives can't do this on PowerPC Macs). This means that in the event your old internal drive ever fails you can recover the computer from the external drive.
There are numerous External Firewire Drives on the market in a huge range of capacities (unlike the internal electronics of the iMac which are limited to 128Gb there is no limit for external drives) so buy the biggest you can comfortably afford. There should be no need for any drivers all you need to do is plug the drive in and then transfer any data across. I advise that you re-install a copy of Mac OS X on the new drive or better still use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy everything from the internal drive to the external drive. You can then use Apple Menu > System Preferences > Start-Up disk to select whether you use the Internal or External drive to boot the Mac.
The drive will appear with an Orange coloured icon on the desktop.
You should buy a 7,200rpm drive as this will be faster than the original internal one. Here are some examples of suitable drives.
    Hope that helps

  • Memory upgrade data protection

If I upgrade imac memory do I need to copy anything fromold memory before installing new replacement?

Are you referring to RAM or the hard drive? If you mean RAM, which is what most people mean when they say "memory", there is nothing to copy since nothing is held permanently there. I do recommending making a backup of your important documents before doing anything significant with a computer, just in case something were to go wrong, but unless something does, upgrading RAM will have no effect on any data stored on your computer.
If by "memory" you mean the iMac's hard drive, though, then you don't really need to make a backup since the hard drive you'll be removing is the backup, more or less. You'll need a external case to mount the drive in so you can get your documents from it (or just clone the entire drive to the new drive).
    Regards.
