HT1430 need to reset ipod touch, passcode locked
need to know how to reset ipod touch that is passcode locked
If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup).
If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present.
You may have to force iPad/iPod into Recovery Mode

For how to restore:
iTunes: Restoring iOS software
To restore from backup see:

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

Need to reset iPod touch...
after agreeing to update software version when i connected to iTunes yesterday, it appeared to back up, but eventually I got error message that it can't be restored. I can hold power button to turn off then back on, but still comes up with picure of usb cable connector, an arrow, and iTunes logo. Now to reconnect to computer itunes doesn't recognize it. Any assistance would be appreciated.
More than likely, You are using an old version of iTunes that is trying to restore to a non-signed file. Update your iTunes then restore in DFU mode (if youve ever jailbroken you know how, or you can google 'iPod Touch DFU video')
