If you are updating from 7.x to 8.x the install is asking you to create a passcode. You can turn passcode off after the install is complete if you so wish.

I just did it. To enter DFU mode, I had to use "method 3" on this post

Too bad my 4S is 2 years old. Wifi is dead. I had to upgrade to 5S, but 5S is soooooo much faster than 4S so it's kind of good outcome. Without the 4S breaking down, a stingy person like me would have never upgraded the phone.

All I can recommend in thsi Apple forum is to Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes.

You were hoping to give the iPhone away right, which means you aren't worried about preserving data?
If that is the case, plug the iPhone into a computer with iTunes, if doesn't automatically ask if you want to restore the iPhone then we need to put the iPhone into forced recovery mode.
You can do that by keeping the iPhone plugged in and pressing and holding the sleep/wake button (the top button) and the home button (round one with the square in it) together until you see an apple logo. Once you see the apple logo let go off the sleep/wake button but keep holding the home button.
Once iTunes says it's detected an iPhone in recovery mode you can let go off the home button and then just restore the iPhone as new.
The added bonus of restoring the iPhone as new means you get rid of any software faults the iPhone may have.

If you haven't already done so, does restarting or resetting the iPhone help the issue?

Were you signed in to iCloud?
Did you have Find My iPhone enabled in the iCloud settings?
If so sign in to iCloud.com > Find My iPhone > Devices & select your iPhone
Otherwise, you are out of luck.

After click confirm key to erase all content and setting its showing a progress icon that moving on the middle point on the screen........I don't know how long it take to complete. If you haven't already tried, see if you can force it into recovery mode to restore it:
