HT1444 how do i upgrade to the latest operating System such as Maverick?

I have operating system os x 10.6.8 and would like to upgrade to Maverick.  Do I have to purchase this?

Please be aware (as no-one else has mentioned it)...:
If you upgrade to anything later than 10.6.8, NONE of your PowerPC software will run, as later OS X's don't have the Rosetta emulator. That might include, for example, all Adobe products prior to CS4, earlier versions of Quark, Apple Works, numerous games and utilities, a lot of shareware and donate-ware, etc. You should check first, using About This Mac / More Info... / Software / Applications (let it build the list, and sort by 'Kind' for easier checking); your Apps will be either Classic (they have never run on Intel Macs), PowerPC (needs 10.6 and Rosetta), Intel or Universal Binary (both ok in Lion or later for 95% of apps).
By the way, I'm running 10.6.8 on a Core i5 iMac 2011, and I have no problems with Vimeo.

How, specifically, do I download the latest operating system for my Mac laptop?

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
If it's a Core Duo Mac, click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update.
If it's a Core 2 Duo or better Mac, follow the Core Duo instructions, open the Mac App Store, and try downloading 10.9. If you get told it's incompatible, go to the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion 10.7.

  • HT5654 I just upgraded to the latest operating system, but it is hung up, no matter how many times I page through the options and hit agree it won't go past the agree/disagree page.

As the title says, my iTunes just updated. So it asked to update my iPhone operating system. I'm logged in but no matter how many pages I link through or page through it won't accept "agree" and move on.  Now I can't do anything with the phone.

It randomly decided to start working after three hours, nevermind.

  • How do i update to the latest operating system on my imac

I have been trying to install Adobe LR5 and it is telling me i dont have the necessary system req. I have checked and believe this is because i am running MAC OS X 10.6.8. I have run the software update tab and it says I'm up to date!
What is the latest OS and how do I upgrade to it please
    Cheers

Your current OS X version meets Adobe Lightroom 5 requirements.
Maybe you do not have enough RAM installled and/or enough free hard drive data storage space.
Here are the Mac system requirements for Adobe Lightroom 5 for Mac.
    Mac OS
Multicore Intel processor with 64-bit support
    Mac OS X v10.6.8, v10.7, or v10.8

  • How do I upgrade to the new operating system from OSX 10.5.8

I have an older laptop and cannot upgrade to the new version of itunes unless I upgrade my operating system.  Can someone please tell me the steps I need to take to upgrade?

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
If it's a PowerPC Mac, it's already running the newest OS it can.
If it's an Intel Mac, click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update twice.
It isn't necessary to upgrade past 10.6.8 to use the current version of iTunes. If you upgrade the OS, back up the computer first.

  • How do I upgrade to the latest Garage Band if I have the 10.6.8 operating system?

I currently have the Mac OS X 10.6.8 operating system and the Garage Band I have is 4.1.2.  The latest version of Garage Band appears to be 10.0.2, so I'm thinking I should upgrade to that.  In looking at a You Tube video on how to use Garage Band, his screens didn't look like mine.  Anyway, can anyone tell me whether I should upgrade to the latest operating system and, if so, how I go about doing that?  Is that a simple download, click on it and it loads and that's all there is to it?

Thanks for replying.  Is that Mavericks?  Someone had said Mavericks wasn't such a good operating system.  What do you think?
Mavericks is better than its predecessors Lion and Mt. Lion. It is faster and introduced better safety features, like the Gate Keeper. And it supports syncing devices using iCloud.
The upgrade to Mavericks  is free, as well the purchase of GarageBand 10.0. The newest GarageBand is very different from the previous version GarageBand '11. Some features have been discontinued and other introduced. Don't uninstall GarageBand '11. You may want to use both versions concurrently. It is difficult to get Garageband '11 and all instruments and effects back, once you uninstalled it on Mavericks.
If you decide to upgrade, make a full TimeMachine backup before you do that, so you can restore your current system, if you discover that necessary apps are not working.  Your current system is the last system that still supports Rosetta and PowerPC applications. You may have expensive software installed, that cannot be upgraded to Mavericks. So check, if all necessary apps, plug-ins, audio interfaces will work with Mavericks.
You can check the compatibility of apps at http://archive.roaringapps.com

If you mean photoshop 6 from around 2001, then ps 6 is way out of the upgrade loop.
The latest version of photoshop is cc 2014 available by subscription only.

There is also photoshop cs6, which you can buy outright, but no upgrade discount for having ps 6.

  • How do I upgrade to the latest version of fcpx?

  • Hi there, I have an older version of 10.5.8. What is the next step to upgrade to the latest version of 10.9 Maverick

Hi there, I have an older version of 10.5.8. What is the next step to upgrade to the latest version of 10.9 Maverick?
    Thanks in Advance

If yours is a PPC iMac (G4 or G5) you cannot upgrade further.
If it is an Intel iMac:
Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
(NB: PowerPC applications can still be run in Snow Leopard using Rosetta, but they will not work in later versions of OS X.)
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes.
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    iCloud system requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4759
If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
    or Mountain Lion:

That is because that sync ability (for contacts and calendars) has been removed. Use iCloud instead.

Open Safari and on the menu named Safari click Preferences. In the Preferences window, click General at the top. Set "New windows open with" and "New tabs open with" to "Top Sites."  You can leave the Homepage setting as it is (e.g. Google), but nothing will open to the Homepage unless you have a Home icon in the toolbar and click on it.

I am operating a 2009 desktop Mac OsX 10.5.8. How do I upgrade to a current operating system? Do I need to purchase Snow Leopard? I have clicked update my software but see now changes.

You first must upgrade to Snow Leopard. In order to upgrade to Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks you first must upgrade to Snow Leopard. Your model should be able to run Mavericks which you can download for free.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Remember to do the following before starting the upgrade process:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Restart the computer from the Apple menu.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
