I am a new MacBook Pro user - actually totally new to the Mac goodies and am having a bit of trouble sorting out how to get a DVD from my external DVD player onto the Mac and then onto my iPad (I travel a lot!). I have been a windows user for many years and am still trying to learn all the bits and pieces. I have VLC on this - don't have any trouble playing a DvD, just don't know how to do the rest i.e. rip it, change to an MP4 and get it onto my other device. Please help! I have a Retina Macbook Pro, but iTunes is asking me to insert a disc. Well, I can't. Why has Apple not fixed this. I want to enter my code and get my movie.
I know that this isn't a real solution for your computer, but the digital copy is tied to your Apple ID. So if you have another Mac, you can redeem it on that Mac, then download the movie to your Retina MBP (Movies in the Cloud FTW).
If you don't own another Mac yourself, find a friend's computer, log out of his iTunes (or make a new user account), log into your Apple ID within iTunes, Authorize iTunes, then insert the DVD and redeem it. I redeemed Skyfall & Frankenweenie from an iMac at work just to see if it works, which it does. Heck, I don't think they even need a Mac, a PC running iTunes should work! -

I have a macbook pro, and am trying to update my software. I recently bought an iphone 5, and my software is to out of date to sync my phone with itunes. I currently am running 10.5.8 and I need to update to atleast 10.6.8. Just wondering if I need to purchase it from apple or if there is an easy/free way to update it.

I currently have iPhoto 8.1.2 on my macbook pro and am trying to update to the latest version. I have had to work backward, but I can only get back to 9.1, which will not install because it says I need at least 9.0 to install it. Is 9.0 available? Will I need to go back even further? Thanks
Upgrading from iPhoto 8 to iPhoto 9 requires a purchase. There are two ways to get to iPhoto 9:
1 - purchase a copy of the iLife 11 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com or eBay.com.
2 - if your MBP meets the requirements upgrade you system for free to Mavericks. Then you can purchase the latest iPhoto version, 9.5.1, from the App Store.

I only have 1 apple ID and the same was used to set up this early 2011 macbook pro and iPhoto app. I don't want to loose out on any photos. I tried logging out of app store and back in but no luck. PLEEAASEE HELPP!!!
This problem has been reported by quite a few forum members, who skipped the update to iPhoto 9.5.1 while running Mavericks. In that case try to purchase iPhoto again instead of updating.
After making your backup try the following:
Uninstall iPhoto by deleting it from the applications folder, but do not empty the Trash.
Launch the App Store, click the "Store" menu, and sign in with your AppleID.
Open the main page of the App Store and search for iPhoto.
If iPhoto is listed as "Free", click the "Free" button to buy it with your current AppleID.
If it is not showing as free, there is no help but contacting the App Store Support, as Niel pointed out: http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/contact/ -

Macbook Pro with Retina Display gets update? what about us?
I mean... What about us... the loyal customers who bought the Macbook at its original price and added upgrade when we could've waited for this new price and the ram update and processor update... no price change? Is Apple going to somehow "payback" the people who basically paid more for the same thing? I don't know why I'd expect this but it certainly would be nice to give us something... Apple just ripped me off... could've waited and saved about $500?
I totally feel you! Also bought my 13" MBP Retina very recently - do not even have it for 6 weeks! And I do understand and know that pricedrops happen a lot in the high-tech industry.. over a longer period of time! The 13" Retina has been out for how long..? Not even 4 full months! This is ridiculous! I call this *bleeping* your (loyal) early adapters. And Apple of all companies in this industry should know how important these (loyal) customers are.
It's not like you just bought an iPhone 4s which is already on the market for 8 months and then the iPhone 5 is presented for the same price. And that would be to expected because you know every year this is going to happen. No, this is like buying an €1800 MacBook Pro Retina 13" which is just brand new on the market for not even 4 months and then see your exact same precious product DROPS in price with €250! That is a whole different story and no one could have expected this move from Apple. It's like a stab in the back! -

I'm a new UK Macbook Pro user and very inexperienced. I've got a new Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4
All was fine until yesterday when I installed a new HP Envy series 110 wi-fi printer, Now the back arrow key (located below the disc eject key and above the return key on the right hand side of the keyboard) doesn't work, which is a pain as it means I can't browse without using the wi-fi mouse to go back on myself, or to use CMD[ keys or failing that the two finger scroll from left to right. I would really like the back arrow to work again. Any ideas?
Can I get my moneys worth here and ask another thing if that's ok, I also installed Norton Internet Security for Mac and once that was done, I was expecting to see, when I googled sites, something like a green circle to show if a site is ok, amber if it's a bit iffy and red for a don't go there.

Mac OSX is secure out-of-the-box. You don't need to run any other security software.
If you want to make your Mac more secure, upgrade to OSX Mountain Lion. -

Hello. I've Apple TV 3rd gen and MacBook Pro 2013 all with latest updates. AirPlay works fine till I don't start streaming videos from YouTube. After that AirPlay icon from MacBook menu bar simply disappears. Could some help. I'm using 2 Mbps internet connection.
Same issue here- I can airplay my amazon prime library just fine from my iphone 5 but on my macbook- (mavericks, 15 inch 2013 retina with quad core i7, nvidia 650 M and SSD) it just sputters and lags.
I have noticed web video is considerably worse than local content, giving me pauses of up to 2 or 3 seconds in which video stops but audio continues in the amazon player. Youku video, however, seems relatively stable. Our subscription speed is 25 mbps, so that should be plenty to stream SD video from Amazon and doesn't account for why it would be nice and stable from the iphone, but not the mbp.
Playing light, locally hosted steam sidescrollers like Limbo is better but gives periodic drops in framerate on the Tv. when mirroring the framerate remains steady on the MBP screen.
Games airplayed from my iphone seem relatively stable, though with a noticably lower framerate on the TV than on the phone.
It seems these issues have abated considerably since yesterday's Apple TV update, but are still curious nonetheless and I'm not sure that the update yesterday was specifically meant to address those issues or if I'm just getting a time with less network interference now.
Comcast recently installed a new router/modem/phone combo, replacing our old separate modem and router setup. I'm going to test if putting the network on a different channel helps. -
