HT1449 Where is my original iTunes Media folder?

I am trying to free up space on my internal HD, so followed the instructions in this article: iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
I believe I have successfully moved the music and media files to my external hard drive and iTunes recognizes their new location. Step 14 says "
After the folder has been copied, locate your original iTunes Media folder, and drag it to the Trash." The default iTunes media folder location is /Users/~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music. Is the "iTunes Music" folder the correct folder to drag to the trash (and then empty trash) to free up space on my internal drive?

Since no one responded to my post, I experimented with deleting individual albums from the iTunes Music folder and no problems were created. I then proceeded to delete (trash/empty trash) the whole folder. However this did not appear to free up any space on my internal drive. The next day my mac hung on start up no matter what I tried. It turns out that the internal drive was bad. I now have a new larger hard drive, so I can move my iTunes Music folder back to the default location.

  • HT1449 How to fix split itunes media folder?

I must have changed the location of my itunes media folder in the past. Now I have half of my media folder in one location and half in another. I don't want to consolidate files because my music is in a shared location. Is there a way to fix this? That is, just combine the itunes media folder into the new location but don't move any media outside of the media folder? I can edit xml if necessary.
    thanks

Looks like when you ask a question from the main screen even though I picked windows 7 it posted to the mac forum. If someone knows how to move this to the windows forum please do so. The question is somewhat generic though so it probably would be OK to answer here. Thanks.

  • ITunes Media Folder won't switch location from external hard drive

So for the last few years I've had my iTunes library stored on an external hard drive (a LaCie Quadra), but I'm out of space, so I got a new one (a Lacie Rugged). However, when I go to change the iTunes Media folder location to the new iTunes folder in my Rugged, it's not switching over, and in fact what's even weirder is I've just discovered no matter where I set the iTunes Media folder location to, my iTunes library will only play from the iTunes folder in my old Quadra. I've Reset it numerous times, and even set the location to the Desktop (on which I have no music), yet it still is playing from my Quadra. It's as if it's locked onto it.
Does anyone know what's going on here and how to fix it? I should note I think I did get it to switch to my Rugged for a bit, as the first time I switched the iTunes Media to my Rugged (which at the same time my Quadra was still connected) I bought a song, which is no where to be found on my Quadra. But ever since I disconnected the Quadra, this problem started. Also, to transfer my files from my Quadra to the Rugged, I connected the Quadra via Firewire 800 and the Rugged via USB, and I intend to use Firewire with my Rugged from now on. Could that affect what's going wrong here? And FYI, every time I've connected to the Rugged, it does go through the Consolidate Files process, but that hasn't done anything.
    Thanks

Do you only have media on the external (which by the way is not a "library" because it is lacking many parts of a complete library), or do you have a complete iTunes folder with library files and support folders (a true library)?
If only media and you have both drives connected you need consolidate/organize media from one drive to the other.  iTunes 12 for Mac: Change where your iTunes files are stored - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19507 - more information at: https://discussions.apple.com/message/22026652#22026652 - and steps 5-8 in https://discussions.apple.com/message/24491967#24491967
If you have your entire library on the external drive, copy the iTunes folder from one drive to the other.  Start iTunes while holding down the option/alt key and select the relocated iTunes folder on the new drive.

  • What/where is my iTunes "Media" folder?

    I'm using 9.0.3 on Mac OSX 10.5.8
Since I upgraded to this, I cannot import CD's. I get a message that says "You don't have write access to your iTunes Media folder or a folder within it" etc etc etc. The problem is that I have no such folder. There is "iTunes" and "iTunes Music," but nothing with the word "Media" associated with it.
I've been doing some searching for this problem and haven't found anyone with this exact issue, but someone using iTunes for Windows fixed another issue by renaming one of their iTunes folders to "iTunes Media." I thought that maybe Apple forgot to tell my Mac to do that, so tried it with either/both of mine and it didn't help.
    What do I do?

check if you have read & write permissions for your iTunes music folder. in finder, right-click on it and +get info+. unlock the little padlock (you may have to enter your admin password) and change the permission settings. next, click on the little gear-shaped icon and +apply to enclosed items+ like so
you may also give everyone read & write access.
The problem is that I have no such folder. There is "iTunes" and "iTunes Music," but nothing with the word "Media" associated with it.
you may still be able to upgrade to the new iTunes media organization. in iTunes, go file > library > organize library. there may be two options: (a) consolidate files and (b) +upgrade to iTunes Media organization+.
in this read you will find further information about the new iTunes media organization (you will have to scroll down a little).

  • How can I move my iTunes media folder from users/shared back to one user account?

I shared my music with multiple users on one macbook pro.
Like on the Apple support discussions described I changed the iTunes media folder to users/shared. My question is how to reverse that action? Once I reset the media folder location it tells me /users/name/music/itunes/itunes media, that would be right but the files remain in users/shared?

Tell us what the underlying objective is in all this.  You came here asking how to move a media folder but now we're getting into user libraries and moving things back and forth to their original locations. Why move it in the first place if you are just putting it back?  Maybe you don't need to move things.
Read these to learn more about how iTunes works.  If you move the wrong things you can end up breaking links.  This goes double for moving things to other drives.

It is almost certain that nothing you are doing will require removing the iTunes application itself.  Asking that tells me you are doing something relatively complicated with insufficient background  -- kind of like somebody asking me how to use a power saw.  I can tell them, but when it sounds like their project is painting a room one begins to wonder if they are going about things correctly.   That said, organizing/consolidating copies files.  Open iTunes, get info on a track, look at summary and see where the file is now located iTunes uses to play the track.  It should be in the moved location and it is okay to delete the others.

  • ITunes doesn't play files stored in iTunes media Folder

    Hi, have this problem:
I had deleted my files from iTunes media folder, but as luckily I had the same files located in other place I just copied them to the iTunes Media but iTunes rejects to play them (in my iTunes Library). I'm only able to play them if I go through the procedure as followings: Play - "iTunes unable to open this file because the original file not found. Do you want to find it?" (or smith like that) - Find - Open  and then it plays, but I have to perform these actions with every file separately and I have quite a lot of them. Oh, and after that first popping-up window the next one appears "Would you like iTunes to find other missing files from the same location as [the file's name]?" But when I click on "Find" it says "iTunes were unable to find other missing files". Why? How do I accomplish the same task but with all my albums at once without necessity to add them one by one?  Does there some way exists to tie the tracks from my albums with original files without importing them to my iTunes library?
    Thank you

Understand how iTunes works.  iTunes does not actively look for files.  When you add a file to iTunes the location of that file is saved in the iTunes database (library file).  When you try to play a track iTunes looks in its database for where the linked file is to be found and tries to play the specific file it has listed in that location.  If you deleted the file then it no longer exists.  I think even if you replace it with one that is identical, iTunes is still looking for that specific file.  You can link the track listing to a new file using the process you have done.  In theory iTunes should be able to find others but the files have to have been organized by iTunes in the past because it will be working on the basis of how it thinks they should be arranged. Additionally the files you replaced have to have exactly the same name as the ones you deleted because iTunes will expect them to be named how it would name them when they were first entered into your library

  • How to set up iTunes with an external hard drive so that there is not a double location for the iTunes Media folder

    Hi,
A very helpful postee got to the end of his knowledge level, so I am posting this for you tech guys to sort out. Bit long because I've tried to set it out step by step. Briefly I'm new to iTunes and my laptop has a very small hard drive and is virtually full and due to be replaced. So I want to use an external hard drive.
Now I know that iTunes installs itself to two locations: 1. Programs Files 2. Music. And its the Music location that bothers me.
I asked about using an external hard disk to store the actual AAC files. I was advised that in order to change the loaction of the iTunes media folder I was should employ preferences/advanced/ and this is what i saw (as you would expect):
Then I hooked up my hard drive, hit 'change', and this is what I saw:
I was a bit worried by the lack of pathway details, but assumed it must have done something on the external drive, so I looked on  it and this is what i saw (highlighted):
But compare this with what was in the directory I attempted to reproduce, viz in the iTunes folder in /laptop/Music/iTunes:
A ton of stuff. The only stuff that corresponded with what iTunes had created on my external hard drive was in Music/iTunes/iTunes Media folder:
Now this suggests that there are TWO locations for my preferences. The advanced tab only allowed me to ADD an extra location, not REPLACE the original.
    So:
    1. Which of the two locations will iTunes choose when I add music? Surely it will go with the original pathway laid down in the directory when iTunes was installed, and ignore my external Hard Drive? I mean, how can there be two automatic locations?!!!
2.. I don't mind itunes library being on my laptop as this is just a list, but it obvoiusly has to have a pathway to the site where the actual AAC files are stored.
so surely it won't work unless the whole lot is on the external hard drive: library, extras, genius, the lot?
    4. How then do I get it all on the external since merely changing "preferences" doesn't do the job?
    5. Is this perhaps the reason why so many people report that iTunes does not recognize their external hard disk:
    http://www.ehow.com/info_12199596_external-hard-drive-not-recognized-itun es.html
I just don't want this to happen to me. Any answers?

As I've replied to your other threads...
    Easy method 1:
Move or Copy entire working library from current location to the root of your external drive. Press & hold down shift (option on a Mac) as you click the icon to start iTunes. Click Choose when prompted, then browse to ..\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl on the external. If you copied the library across then test your new library works properly after renaming the original folder, before deleting the original folder to recover space.
    Easy method 2:
If you haven't really started to build your library. Press & hold down shift as you click the icon to start iTunes. Click Create. Browse to the root of the external drive. Create the library as ITunes. Drag your media into ..\iTunes\iTunes Media\Automatically Add to iTunes.
    Complex method:
Required if you've already tried other things and now have media & library scattered around. See the post make a split library portable.
    in addition...
In all cases the idea is to get a library folder called iTunes containing a media folder called iTunes Media with all media inside this media folder. Once you have the library in this shape it is easy to reconnect to the library with the shift-start-iTunes method if the drive letter changes, move the library to another computer, and backup the library by cloning the folder to another drive.

  • ITunes Media Folder Frustrations

    Hi,
I hate, hate, hate the way that iTunes sorts the library for you into Artist/Album/Song. While this is useful if you have many tracks for an artist but three folders for just one song is ridiculous and results in songs that you know, being squirreled away under artists that you have no idea even existed.
So, I have sorted my library in Windows Explorer into genres, i.e Breaks, Chillout, Orchestral etc. These folders are then sorted into artist/album if I have alot of that artists music, or if the artist only has a few songs the individual songs are left in the genre folder.
Now to listen to my music on my computer I simply add whatever genre to Windows Media Player or VLC. However I now want to update my ipod!
In the Edit-Preferences-Advanced section I have changed the location of my iTunes Media Folder to the external hard drive that all tracks are on. I have unselected 'Keep iTunes Media Folder Organised' and 'Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library'.
When I import songs I have been using 'Add folder to library' for each different genre. For some iTunes still creates a Artist/Album version of the songs. I think it MAY be the songs that it converts, but am not sure. Is there a way to stop iTunes doing creating Artist/Album folders and simply follow how you have set up the directory?
    Thanks!!

If you have unchecked both "Keep..." and "Copy..." then iTunes does not move or rename the files. It leaves them where they are, and creates an iTunes library entry that points to the original location, which is what you want.
The only exception will be if you add a WMA file. iTunes converts it to the designated format that you specified in IMporting preferences. The newly converted copy is added according to Artist/Album, which is exactly what you don't want.
If you are using your music across platforms, you must avoid WMA. The one format that is useful across almost every player program and phone is MP3. If you rip the CD in another tool, make sure you set it for MP3. You can add the MP3s to iTunes and keep your own folder structure, as I described above.

  • ITunes media folder on external HD issue...

So I have a quick question...
I've been using my external HD to house my iTunes library for over a year now. No issues, it's been working great. When I add new music to my library on my computer, it copies the files to my HD, or just reorganizes the files that are there.
    Now.. suddenly.. it's having issues.
I tried clearing out the library on my computer to reimport some key albums I wanted. I notice now that my iTunes is creating a second Music folder inside my already designated Music folder to place the folders... it's now moving all the albums I import from one directory to the other, and I can't figure out how to make it stop.
I've already made sure the iTunes Music folder on my computer is empty, and I've changed the designated iTunes Media folder several times, working fine, then putting it back to External HD > Music .... and it decides no music shall be placed here.
For easy reference, it's creating a path like this: External HD > Music > Music
Eh? Help is appreciated... Thank you guys.

I've been using my external HD to house my iTunes library for over a year now.
I tried clearing out the library on my computer
I thought you just said the library was on your external drive.  What's iTunes doing putting things on your computer?
How exactly did you do this move in the first place a year ago?  What was it you did recently as part of this cleaning?  I strongly suspect that's where things went wrong (maybe at both stages).
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick procedure if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.
Do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in
iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
If you did the move using just preferences settings then you did not move the whole library, you only told iTunes where to start storing future media.

  • Problems transfering iTunes Media folder from one external HDD to another.

    Hey Yinz.
I'm running a MBP 13" 2.7Ghz Intel Core i7...OS X 10.6.8.  Recently the NAS that hosted my iTunes Media folder and library failed.  I recovered the drive from the NAS...a WD Caviar (WD2500JS), which was originally written in XFS.  After substantial effort, I found a process that would enable me to access this drive, and have my Mac read it. This involved a Newer Technologies Voyager Q, coupled with a recent version of (whatever they're calling) MacFuse.  It did so sucessfully.  Now what i want is to take my iTunes Media folder and library off of the WD, ex-NAS HDD (its original location), and transfer it to a new HDD.
I bought a Toshiba Canvio basics usb 3.0/2.0.
Most online tutorials describe dragging and dropping the folder in the new location.  I can connect both HDDs to my MBP, and the transfer will begin...
    But.
After the first few minutes...The Finder will not allow me to complete the transfer.  I keep getting an error code -8084.
I'm almost certain that the new HDD (which i formatted as Mac OS X Journaled in Disk Utility) is not recognizing special characters in certain file names in my iTunes Library.  I have some artists in my folder that require special characters to display their names properly.  I realize these were originally written in a Linux format.
So, is there a way around this...other than changing the filenames?  I really don't want to destroy the integrity of my library by changing a bunch of characters that accurately identify artists.  I guess if all i had was Billy Joel and the Beatles in my library, i'd be Okay...but i don't.
I also read a thread somewhere that suggested that error code -8084 relates to inadequate power distribution of an attached HDD.  This also complicates my problem...as the new external HDD (Toshiba) is bus powered, and lacks an option for a dedicated AC power supply.
While i am able to access and use my iTunes as normal...i'm tied to that WD HDD, which is like, over 5yrs old, and i'm really hoping to get my media off that old HDD, and onto a new HDD with the files intact and accurate.
Any help would be much appreciated and welcome.
    --j.m.
    P.S. I'm running iTunes 10.7

No solid data here but it just seems to me that when I see issues arise about copying data and strange error messages that it has to do when people are using non Mac-formatted drives.  I think they kind of work but once you put them under real pressure you just get problems.   Maybe I'm just thinking of all those vague error -50 "communications difficulties" messages from people trying to copy their libraries to FAT drives.  I wonder if using Terminal to do the copying would help.
Now, there is a difference between placing your media on a drive and your library on a drive.  Your library is your whole iTunes folder along with files such as the critical library.itl file and artwork files, etc.  Media are just what's in your media folder - music, movies, etc.  If you are moving your whole library you can drag and drop copy.  If you are moving your media you can drag and drop but then the new drive has to have the identical drive name as the old one (the old and new pathnames have to remain unchanged).  Usually the best way to move media is to use iTunes' preferences setting to consolidate your media to the new location.  iTunes very easily loses track of files unless you let it do the moving (exception: moving the whole iTunes library folder).
iTunes 10 for Mac: Consolidate your iTunes library - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH990
iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
    vs.
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.

  • HT1364 If I already moved Itunes media folder to external drive and now music is not matching up in iTunes?

    Dear Itunes Community~
This is my first time using glad you are here, but all the passwords!!
    Question/Quandry:
If I already moved Itunes media folder to my external drive and now my music is not matching up in iTunes, what should I do?  I have tried my solution !?, and now I have 17,000 songs, instead of 9,000!
Should I just uninstall Itunes, and then reinstall Itunes, and let it do it's thing, and then figure out how to move to the external hard drive later?
Help, I screwed it up all on my own!
Any/all help and Itunes educated suggestions appreciated!
    Thank you very much,
    Doris =:o
PS ~~ Is there anyway to easily delete duplicates?? Seems not?

I have a very similar problem. Hope I don't confuse people trying to help us since the solutions may be different.
I had my iTunes path directed to a 2nd internal hard drive. Everything was working fine - except I found that purchased Apps were still being downloaded to the Mobile Applications folder on my main hard drive instead of the 2nd internal drive. I decided to retry directing the iTunes path to my 2nd internal drive, hoping that might get iTunes to save my Apps there. Big Mistake. Suddenly, there were no Apps showing in my iTunes Library Apps window at all. I verified the downloaded apps are still in my main hard drive's Mobile Applications folder, but I cannot get iTunes to display them in my Apps Library window anymore.
I decided to try downloading a new app and, sure enough, iTunes once again downloaded it into the very same Mobile Applications folder on my main hard drive, where all my (now orphaned) original apps are, but the only one iTunes will only display in my Apps window is the new one. I read you can redownload purchased apps, but my apps are not missing. iTunes just won't display them in the Apps window anymore.

  • ITunes not storing files in iTunes media folder location

A number of years ago I wanted to move my itunes media files to an external drive. At the time an article was posted that explained how to do such that. Additionally the article explained how to put the media files in one folder on the external file server and all the itunes definition files in another folder on the same external file server. It worked perfectly! All seemed well. Of course since making this change there have been many many updates to iTunes and the OS.
Recently, I was scanning through the folders of the external file server and noticed some media files that appeared in the iTunes application listing were missing in the physical iTunes media folder (folder A). After a little searching I found the media files were in the iTunes definitions folder (folder B). Initially I thought somehow I had changed the folder location under the iTunes advanced tab. I checked it stilled pointed to the ORIGINAL folder A location. Yet iTunes had for a while as it turns out had created a whole new media folder tree and was adding the media files to that media tree (folder B). This is the folder the original only contained the iTunes definitions.
Thinking I had made a mistake somewhere sometime ago, I copied all the media files to the proper folder (folder A) and reset the iTunes Media folder location to point to folder A. All was fine.
Today I added some new media to the iTunes library and once again, iTunes created a new media folder tree in folder B were only the iTunes definitions are supposed to be stored. So once again I moved the media files to the proper folder.
There is no question THIS IS A SOFTWARE BUG. It does NOT matter what folder location is specified in the Preferences->Advanced->itunes media location is specified, iTunes will either CHANGE the folder location to wherever the definitions files are located or begin putting the media files where the definitions files are located even though the iTunes media location is setting to a different folder.
when this started I do not know. I have been using itunes for a number of years and once I had my external file server set up never had reason to check it.
One might ask why put the media files in one location and the definition files in another location. That is because there was a time when iTunes for some reason would think it definition files were corrupted and start to do nasty things to the media library. Once I lost a number of songs it is then when I found a note in this forum that suggested putting the definitions in one folder and the media in another folder. It was great idea. Is there a work around of a fix for this bug?

    Some additional information.
When I click the apps tab in iTunes, some of the applications listed are actually songs (the songs are also shown in the music list and point to the proper location), when I click Get Info on some of the apps, it points to a song, and some apps that actually exist in the Mobile Apps folder are shown to located in a song folder. Bottom line the apps database is corrupted.
When I consolidated the music files I did not touch the mobile applications folder. As best I can tell all the movies and songs are fine (about 3000 items in total).
When I export the library it does not include the apps in the xml file. So deleting the iTunes DB and re-importing the .xml will not work.
To recap. All the songs and movies are in one folder (folder A). This is the folder listed in the Preferences->Advanced->Itunes media location. The apps folder is located in a different folder (folder B) where the iTunes definition files are located. How they got there I do not know.
How do I fix the apps tab and have the app icons (and physical applications) to point to the proper location? Also to remove the songs listed in the apps list without removing the song from the iTunes library.

  • Moving my itunes media folder back to my computer from external hard drive

Hope someone can help me here as I've gotten myself confused.
A couple years ago I moved my Media Folder to an external hard drive.  I now want to move it back but I'm doing something wrong.
    Here's what I did.
Copied the Media Folder from external to computer desktop.
Moved Media Folder into the Computer's iTunes Media folder.
Changed the folder location in Preferences of iTunes to the computer's Media Folder.
It didn't work.  It is still looking for songs on the external hard drive.
    Thoughts?
Do I need to follow the same tutorial for moving the media folder backwards?
Why can't I just move the media files to where I want them on the computer and then change the media folder location in itunes?
Do i need to create a new folder for it to work?

    Jason R. McCarty wrote:
So I don't need to follow this tutorial and create a new folder? http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
Correct, you don't need to create anew folder.
You may want to do that if you are putting the media elsewhere and don't want to simply have a folder named iTunes media floating around.
If there is already a Media folder in Music/iTunes will it make another or use that one?
It will use the one already there.
Also, what if there are duplicate files in the computer location?
After you consolidate, you will need to delete them from iTunes (if they actually show up in iTunes).
If they don't show up in Tunes, either add them to iTunes (if they are not duplicates) or delete them from the iTunes media folder.
I suggest first dumping them into a folder on your desktop before you actually trash them (in case they are not duplicates).
