HT1451 Can you have two seperate libraries on the same computer? How can you do that?

My family uses the same computer but I like different music. How can I create a seperate library for me to sync to?

Launch iTunes with the Shift key(Windows) or Option key(Mac OS X) held down, or use a different user account.

  • How to have two seperate Itunes on the same computer for two Ipods?

Is there a way to have two separate Itunes downloaded on the same computer for two different Ipods? My sister got a new Ipod and she wants to hook it up to the computer but when ever she does it just pulls up my Itunes and has all of my songs on there. How can we each have our own Itunes?

There's many ways to accomplish this. You could create two accounts in Windows. That way everything is completely separate. Or, you could manually manage your music in iTunes -- this way it won't automatically sync your music onto her iPod. More info here:

Can you have two itunes accounts on the same computer and if so how do you access them without syncing each others music?

Yes. Use separate iTunes libraries(launch iTunes with the Shift(Windows) or Option(Mac OS X) key held down as needed), or different user accounts on the computer.

    yes.

give them distinct names. launch iTunes while holding the option (⌥) key, click on choose library when prompted, and select the iTunes folder of the desired library.
FWIW, there are 3rd party apps that help with managing multiple libraries, notably:
    PowerTunes
    iTunes Library Manager

  • We have two iphone 4s on the same computer and after we did the ios6 upgrade the text messages are being sent to both phones. How do we stop this?

My wife and I's iphone 4s' are both on the same computer.  When we did the new upgrade to ios6 it started sending text messages to both of us from each other.  For example I sent my wife a text "Hey" and then my phone received a message from Me "Hey."  Another example is that a friend sent my wife a text and both of us received it from that friend, but not in a group message. We both deleted our icloud account and the problem still happened.  Then we checked that we were both signed in to our own personal accounts for imessage and we were.  After turning off imessage the problem went away.  Any ideas on how to make imessage work without having it send messages to both of us?

I also have the same problem and changed the send & receive addresses . But it always seems to revert back to 2 addresses/numbers on the second , my wifes phone . Which isn't the best .

  • Can I have 2 music libraries on the same computer?

I have an iPod and my wife would like to purchase one aswell. All of my music resides on my desktop. Our tastes in music differ a bit so she would like her own library and I would like mine. If we purchase a new iPod can we have two libraries?
    Thanks.

When the iPods belong to different people, there are basically three ways of using multiple iPods on a computer and these involve:
    a) Sharing a single iTunes library
    b) Creating Multiple Libraries in a single user account
    c) Creating multiple user accounts.
Note: When you are sharing an iTunes library, you don't have to set each iPod to update in the same manner, you can mix and match from the options below as each iPod has it's own update settings
Sharing a Library and/or User Account
If you want to share the one library, you can set either or all of the iPods so that they only get updated with only certain playlists (you can update from more than one if you wish): Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for the iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used some other time if you choose. You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
Or you can choose to update any or all of the iPods manually and just drag whatever content you want to them: Managing content manually on iPod
Loading the iPod shuffle differs slightly but it can still be used with the others, for details have a look at this page: Loading songs onto iPod shuffle - Windows
    Multiple Libraries
It's also possible to have multiple libraries in a single account. To create or access a second (or more) library, hold down the Option key (or Shift key in Windows) when launching iTunes 7. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to the other Library.
Note: You can only have one Library open at a time and iTunes will default to the last library opened if you don't use the keyboard command to choose one. This can prove tricky when using multiple iPods, if you don't use the keyboard command you can risk syncing to the wrong library: Using multiple iTunes libraries -Windows
    Separate User Accounts
Another option is to create a separate User account for each person on your PC or Mac. Different accounts by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. The iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists
I don't use Windows so I can't give you a step by step on that one, however I can point you to another web page which should help you out. You can read about Windows user accounts here: Using Windows XP User Accounts

  • Can I access two different libraries on the same computer with the remote app?

I am in the process of upgrading our home network. There is going to be an airport express in each of the main rooms of our house all running to a switch connected to our AirPort Extreme. The reason for this is so we can stream our music in any or all of the rooms we choose.  I'm going to have a Windows 7 PC running iTunes constantly also connected so that we will have access to the entire library on any of our devices.  My entire library will be housed on an external hard drive that will be connected to the Extreme. Here is where it gets tricky. My wife has a separate library that we want to have access to as well. It is going to be housed on a separate external hard drive connected to the Extreme via a USB hub. I don't want to combine our libraries because hers is absolute chaos and mine is very well organized. Without having to have a second  computer running iTunes constantly, is there a way we can access both libraries simultaneously with the remote app? Either by running two instances of iTunes on one computer or some other way I'm not realizing. As it works right now, if we're both running iTunes on our laptops, then I can go onto my iPad and see both full libraries on the remote app. I want to do that, but with just one computer.

I doubt it is possible to run two instances of iTunes on the computer at the same time.  To do so would require two users to be signed in and running iTunes under each user.
The better solution would be to either clean up and merge the two libraries or have iTunes running on a second computer.

You would need to create 3 user accounts on the computer.

  • How do i sync two different ipads to the same computer, but maintain two seperate list of apps?

How can I sync two seperate ipads to the same computer without the apps from one ipad being loaded on the other?

Do this for each device. You can do this with all iTunes content as well. Apps, music, photos, books, movies - everything. You can have unique content on all of your devices.
You may also want to turn off auto sync so that you do not have to wait for the iPad to sync and then go back and make these changes.
Launch iTunes and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices - check the box at the bottom.... Prevent iPods, iPhones ....
Then set up your sync preferences like this using Apps as the example.
Connect the iPad to the computer and launch iTunes.
Click on the iPad name on the left side under devices.
Click on the Apps Tab on the right.
Click on all of the apps that you want to sync to that iPad
Click on the Sync Apps Heading.
Click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes
You may want to uncheck Automatically Sync New Apps under the Sync Apps list
