  • Got new Mac! Easiest way to transfer iTunes Library via iPod?

I just got myself a brand spankin' new MacBook Pro. It's been great. I thought to myself, well, I could just keep my music on my main Mac and use iTunes' sharing feature. But, it is VERY unreliable, my MBP only detects it, like, 30% of the time.
So, long story short, I want a library of about 1700 items (about 1600 songs, 100 others) on my MBP. I've already authorized and I have an 80GB 5th Gen iPod.
(I don't care about transferring games or photos. But I do want my videos.)
What is the best program. I want it to transfer rating and cover art. I would STRONGLY prefer it it could also transfer or arrange my playlists. Please recommend software that works! I've had terrible experiences with iPod rippers.
    So, the checklist is:
    Free
    Transfers playlists
    Transfers cover art and rating
    Easy-to-use
    Transfers videos
    WORKS
    Thank you for helping!

    Hello,
The best way to make a transfert to one mac to another is to start the one you want to tranfert from in Target mode (meaning it will be considered by the other mac as an external HD).
To do so : restart your mac holding the T key pressed, you'll see a nice Firewire sign instead of the usual Apple sign. Then hook your mac using a firewire cable to the one you want to tranfert file to. It will mount as a normal HD.
Sorry if i am not very clear but english is not my first language and it's pretty late here. If you need more detailed informations, let me know.
Also, note that you can create a network between two Macs using a firewire cable (faster than ethernet !)

  • Easiest way to transfer iTunes library on an external drive to a new Mac?

    Hello,
I currently have my entire iTunes Library (Music, Movies, TV Shows, etc.) on an external hard drive.
I have a new Mac arriving tomorrow, to replace my current one. What is the easiest way to get my entire Library into iTunes on my new Mac?
I know Migration Assistant is normally supposed to help with this, but I assume that's only if the Library has been stored internally. Can I simply plug the external drive into the new Mac, authorize the computer, and Import my entire Library from the File menu?
Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks!

    From your OLD computer...
Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..
    Full Details Here  >  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751
An Added Bonus is that you will have a Backup of iTunes.
Also... Have a look at these 2 Videos...

It is important that the External Hard Drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled).

Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

In very simple terms, what would be the easiest way to run iTunes from an external hard drive? I have about 180GB of music and need to transfer it all to the external drive and run iTunes from the external drive. I'm not a technical, so please be quite specific. All help is greatly appreciated.

  • The same itunes Library and playlists on the same computer with two systems

I want to have the same itunes library and playlists on the same computer with the two different Os 10.3.9 and 10.4.9 each one on the different disk. without copy this in the itunes folder (because my library its 30Gb)
I have the same user name on the Os. I use the same version of itunes in both systems
I use my ipod to play the library but its not the best solution (i lost my library in ipod twice because I confused from what os was synchronized)

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Amalgamate the two iTunes libraries. Then load iTunes and hold down the Option/Alt ⌥ key and then choose "Choose Library" and then point both copies of iTunes to use the combined iTunes library.

Migrate an iTunes library from one computer to another
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entireiTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one, with ratings, play counts, playlists etc. preserved. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd normally recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library and unlike copying with Windows Explorer the process can be resumed if it is interrupted and it will continue to the next item if there are any read/access errors.
Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See Make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then seeRecover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

can anyone tell me how to restore my itunes library and playlists? After I downloaded mountain lion my library is missing and my devices can be synced to only one library ...the missing one

That .itl file actually is the library -- at least the critical part of it although the library is actually many files and folders.
Try starting iTunes and immediately hold down the option key.  When it asks, guide it to the .itl file.
It's really hard to say without being able to poke around your computer.  Upgrading should not delete the old library, but still it happens to the very, very few which is why we make backups before updating.  If the old library file is gone then so are your playlists.  You can always see if the following is of any use:

    Hi dude,
I know it was over a year ago when you asked this, so I guess you've got it sorted now... Anyway, I had the same problem so I entered the registry data manually. Here's the guide if you or anyone else needs it:

  • Transfer iTunes Library and Music to new computer

I know this has probably been asked many times before but can anyone help me transfer my iTunes Library and Music files to my new computer. I just bought a new iMac and need to move things. I had previously moved my Music files to my external hard drive as my old computer hard drive was getting full. So I have my Library on my old computer and my Music files on my external hard drive. I want to transfer both onto my new computer (both on internal hard drive).
    How do I do this?

Yes, read the other discussion and what I am saying to do is copy the iTunes folder from the internal drive onto the external drive with the music already stored there.
You should now be able to open the library directly from that location using the linked start up directions from the other thread. If that works, you can then move the drive to another computer and open the library there using the same start up instructions.

  • Restore iTunes library and playlists to new computer

Hi. I'm buying a new computer and am looking for an easy way to transfer all my music and playlists over from the old computer to the new one. I have the entire iTunes folder backed up onto a different network computer from my current (old) computer. Now the way I understand it, is if I copy the entire iTunes folder from my network computer onto the new computer, it will restore all my library and playlists. Is this right? The only problem is, I will be using different versions of iTunes. This is because I am moving from Windows 2000 to Vista and I can't download the latest version of iTunes to Windows 2000 because it isn't being supported any more.
Will I be able to restore my library and playlists from one version of iTunes to another? Any help you can give would be appreciated. Thanks!

Yes provided all your music files were in the iTunes Music folder in the iTunes folder, you should be able to copy the iTunes folder to your new PC and have all your playlists etc.
Install iTunes on the new PC first. Then, with iTunes closed and before you add any music, drag the iTunes folder out of the Music folder on the new PC to the desktop.
Then copy the iTunes folder from the backup onto the new PC to replace the one your dragged out.
You need to check the file permissions of the iTunes folder to ensure your account has full control, Vista is fussy about this, and the folder was created under another account.
Once you have done this, start iTunes and it should convert the library to the newer version etc. With any luck you will have your everything back as it was.
