HT1451 How to create a 'playlist' ?

After 'updating' my itunes I am having trouble with syncing music and books to my pod and creating playlists. I have read the itunes tutorial re creating a playlist but fall at the first hurdle because the playlist heading doesn't come up on my screen from any of the categories I tick. What should I be doing to get that screen?

Ctrl B to Show the Top menu bar
then View > Show left hand sidebar
View > Show Status Bar
It should now look like itunes 10 and playlists work exactly the way they did before

Ok i got it figured out. since i had all the music on my computer it was just the fact of what i wanted. i went to my old ipad and created a playlist of ALL the songs then went into itunes right clicked that play list and exported it as a txt to my desktop. i then in itunes clicked flie>library>import playlist. selected that txt document and it imported to itunes library. i was then able to select all the songs in that play list and transfer them to my new ipad.

in all manuals it says and shows go to playlist icon, but I don't have such icon. and in iTunes it only offers me genius mixes, can't find any way to create my own playlist. tried google etc, but no results

I found some information on how to create playlists on iPod nano (6th generation) here:

The information starts on page 25:
Creating and editing playlists
Create a playlist:
1 On the Home screen, tap Music, and then tap Playlists.
2 Flick down, and then tap Add.
3 Tap a category (Songs, Albums, Podcasts, and so on), and then tap the items you want to add.
Don’t tap Done until you’ve added everything you want to include in the playlist.
4 Swipe left to continue adding content.
You can add content from any category. For example, you can mix podcasts with songs in a
single playlist.
5 When you finish, tap Done.
The new playlist is named New Playlist 1 (or New Playlist 2, and so on). The next time you sync, you can change the title in iTunes. When you sync again, the playlist title on iPod nano is updated.
Since I am quoting this article out of context, I also located the section on multitouch gestures (page 11) to help with step 2 above:
Flick
Flick your finger quickly up or down to scroll rapidly. You can wait for scrolling to stop,
or touch anywhere on the screen to stop it immediately. Touching the screen won’t choose
or activate anything.
In some lists, such as Playlists, you can flick down to show editing controls at the top.

If you have bought Streaming Server License - you want to be able to create any server-side playlists as you cannot write you own customized code on Streaming Server.
However what you can do is create client-side playlist using client-side code, place all your files in media folder of VOD and use them in your playlist. Playlist is nothing but set of plays which are queued up so you just need to issue NetStream plays with last parameter "reset" set to false - this is so that you do not reset your previous play.
So it would be like
ns.play("abc",0,20,true);
ns.play("xyz",0,30,false);
ns.play("uvw",0,20,false);

Hope someone can help me here. How do you set the movies to play continuously? I can't seem to create a playlist for the movies. You can create playlist for podcast videos and musics but how do you creat playlist for the 3 movies I have got on my iphone?

Not exactly true. As absurd as it sounds, if you have just one music track in your playlist, then you can select it from the Playlists section on the iPhone and play your videos, movies etc. one after the other.
I have created a completely empty music track in Garageband which I drag onto the end of each and every video playlist I create. An ugly solution, but it works.
You have to remember to check the playlist in both the Video and Music sections in iTunes->Devices->Your iPhone.

You can do it 2 different ways. The first is just creating a blank playlist and then navigate to the videos, then click and drag the videos and a menu on the right hand side will appear and choose that playlist. The other method involves enabling the side bar and the creating a blank playlist, then navigating to the videos and drag and drop the videos that you want. The article below about creating playlist will apply to videos as well.

How to create a playlist with podcasts AND music?

I created a playlist with both podcasts and music in it. The thing is when I try to shuffle it, only music plays. When I start playing podcasts, none of my music plays. How can I make them both play at the same time and shuffle on the same playlist?

In iTunes, you created a playlist (with songs and podcasts), and then synced that playlist to the iPod? Or you manually created a playlist on the iPod, and manually added songs and podcasts to that playlist? It needs to be an actual playlist that is on the iPod, not simply songs and podcasts on the iPod.
If you have a playlist on the iPod.... In shuffle mode, only songs play. Set the iPod to play-in-order (not shuffle). Then, select the playlist on the iPod (by selecting Music -> Playlists from the Home screen). With the playlist selected, press Play/Pause. The playlist plays the song and podcasts in the order shown for that playlist in iTunes.

How To Create Backup Playlist for iPod

Can someone tell me how to create a backup playlist for songs on my iPod? If I ever need to use iPod Restore, I know that the iPod will return to factory settings, and all my songs will be wiped out. I would like to create a backup playlist that will allow me to select all songs and then drag and drop them into the "wiped clean" iPod (under iTunes "Devices") after Restore is complete. I have created an iPod Playlist folder under "Playlists", but iTunes will not allow me to drag and drop music from my iPod into the new folder.

As you can see... I need to be able to duplicate the playlist audio tracks at certain points in the playlist to create the event that I need for that day.
The problem is that iTunes sees that a duplicate track is put into the playlist and doesn't allow it. I end up with this as I can not readd an audio track that I have in the playlist already.

Is there no way to tell iTunes to allow duplicate audio tracks in a playlist?

Smart playlists and playlist folders won't hold duplicate entries, but it should be possible to put the same track more than once into a regular playlist. Go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced and click the button Reset Warnings... iTunes should now warn you when you try to add duplicate items to a playlist, but you should have the option to add the items anyway.

You can organize playlist into folders, Just goto file>New Folder, type the name of the folder you want, then drag and drop playlist into the folder

How to create genius playlist

The iTunes 11.0.1 Help page for "Play a Genuis playlist or Genius Mix" contains a gross error as follows:
Under "Create a Genius playlist" it says:
Control-click a song and choose Start Genius.
This is incorrect. Instead, one must first select a seed song, then click on the triangle next to the seed song and select "Create Genius Playlist." Strangely enough, this choice is not available on the Control-click menu as it should be.

In the "carrot menu" next to each song, I see an option to "Start Genius."
When I select that, the list of songs in my Up Next list changes, but there's no "real place" to see the Genius List like the Genius list in the previous version of iTunes. If you select this from a song that's not currently playing, it will start to play (as in the prev itunes).
I echo your frustration here. So many things seem to be half-way between one model and another.
