HT1455 iMac shuts down itself in the middle of Safe Boot progress bar loading

Hi, Im using a late 2009 iMac 21.5'' on Mountain Lion. (Originally Snow Leopard I THINK)
I got the dreaded grey screen one day and after I did more reseach i tried using the Safe Boot way.
Now Ive encountered a new problem, everytime I turn on my mac, it shows the Apple logo and the Safe Boot progress bar.
Not even reaching halfway through the bar, it just shuts down itself, every single time.. please help?
Btw, I',m using a wireless keyboard, I had to go around borrowing a windows keyboard from my friends, I dont know if anyone can shade some light if i can use wireless to do the keyboard pressing thing when it starts up?
I've also tried inserting my original OS installation disc and press C..it just shows a grey screen, then the disc got ejected, then the Apple logo with the progress bar and then shuts down itself.
Please help, I just need to go into my system one more time and backup my important datas before i go for the 1TB Seagate Replacement Program.
Thank you so much, appreciate it!

Is that similar with this article http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1553 on 'Instruction for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk utility' ?
No, that copies the entire drive IF it's entirely readable which you don't need, you only REALLY need is your files as everything else (OSX and programs) can be replaced)
Ds store: I read your article on creating a data recovery.
This is designed to install OS X onto a external drive, boot from it and then:
1: Attempt data recovery via normal drag and drop methods on your Users folders.
2: If the above fails, to see if the internal drive is working via Disk Utility, and/or use Data Rescue software ($100) to attempt recovery of the files themselves, bypassing the file structure and whatever is causing the problem.
3: Build your extenral boot drive of everything the way you need it, then Carbon Copy Cloner the external onto the internal drive (new or erased whatever the case may be)
May I ask you why not port powered?
Mac's have been shutting off ports that are drawing too much current, like what port powered hard drives do.
Am planning to get myself a 3TB external HDD 3,5" for all my backups in time for my AASP journey
Too large for a boot drive, you basically want a external boot drive equal too or slightly larger than the boot drive your recovering from, because later you can use it as a bootable clone backup of the entire boot drive and store it for emergencies.
These large drives like 1TB and 3TB are sometimes problematic (especially with 10.6) when formatting. Also I advise all boot drives be Zero erased before OS X is installed or cloned onto it to reduce bad sectors,  a zero erase on a 3TB drive could take 6-10 hours.
If you want to use the 3TB, use it for file backup, not for your bootable clone your creating with the instructions I gave.
You see later on, once you got all your data off the internal boot drive, you build the external boot drive just like you would do a brand new erased internal drive. You add programs and whatnot, tweak it how you like. Because later on your use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the external onto the erased or new internal drive. Get it?
So 3TB is excessive if your internal boot drive is only 500GB, you will have 2.5TB left over.
Sure you can partition, but I don't advise having so many backups on one piece of physical media, you drop it, lose it or fry it, you lost everything.
So more and seperate pieces of backup are safer in that regard, hardware and software redundancy.

  • Imac shuts down, randomly, all the time

So my imac shuts down randomly all the time, after it turns itself off, u need to unplug it for ages, then it will restart (way longer than it should to reset smc). Even in target mode,
Even stranger is it logs a console message stating, system must shutdown now, shutting down....
I thought it must certainly be hardware issue but what? I have checked all temps, reset firmware, etc etc.....
The logic board has been replaced, so it can only be the psu?? any ideas?

    I've experiencing the same problem.
If there is a power failure (or the power line gets disconect) I have to unplug everything from the back of the computer and wait for hours till I can turn it back on.
Recently it started to turn itself off..... and then I have to wait for several hours till I can get it to work again..... any tips on how to solve this?

  • IMac shuts down itself (or log off) when I leave it  even if working

My iMac shuts down itself when I leave it for a few minutes even if working, just as example, when rendering a movie. Every time I leave the computer for more than 30 minutes, I come back and I find the first screen. (actually I don't know if the iMac shuts down or just log off)
    Anybody knows ?
    Thanks

    Hi Max
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
There are two levels of sleep, Display Sleep and Computer Sleep.
Go to: Apple > System Preferences > Energy Saver > and set Computer Sleep to Never and Display to Sleep after 10 or 15 minutes. That way the Computer will stay awake, but the Display will Sleep if your not sitting there doing something on it.
Also if you want to disable the password after Computer Sleep, go to System Preferences > Security > General and uncheck the Require password box.

Firefox shut down & updated in the middle of my work; I could not restore my session; you have literally cost me my job and future if this cannot be fixed. I don't understand why it updated without me prompting it to. It also never ask to report a crash.
I went to play a youtube video, my entire screen flashed, when the screen came back, the youtube video screen was green. I refreshed the page and my system stopped- a blue screen appeared and something about verifying disk or something. My system the restarted, and when I opened firefox, it first said preparing updates and when it did finally open, the new updated version, of course, I could not restore my previous session.

You can check in the Firefox profile folder to see if there are numbered sessionstore-##.js present.<br />
The sessionstore.bak file could also have a previous session.

You can also try to restore a previous copy of the sessionstore.js file if there is one present that could contain that lost session.

Be sure to make a backup copy of all sessionstore files before making changes.

  • IMac shutting down on startup - Can't enter safe mode as wireless keyboard doesn't connect quickly enough

    Hi all,
I was planning to use bootcamp to install Windows 7 on my mid-2010 21.5" iMac.
Bootcamp recommended I usk disk utility to repair the drive. I had a snow leopard install disk in the drive, (I didn't realise Lion already had it's recovery tools built in to the hard drive.)
Disk utility said it can't repair the drive and recommended I start backing up my data (because the hard drive could be about to fail). Fine, so I restarted, with the intention of backing up everything (all my work for the last 12 months). So I press the power button, grey screen comes up, then the apple logo, then a progress bar appears (found this odd at first, but later found out it has something to do with disk utility and a bad hard drive) it gets to around 20% and then all power is cut from the iMac and the hard drive stops/everything powers down.
Now, I can't seem to get my iMac to boot into recovery utilities or into safe mode because it doesn't connect to the wireless keyboard in time before it shuts down. So, if I use a wired keyboard (I have a dell USB keyboard that I can take from the office), will I be able to boot into safe mode?
Also, if the disk in drive is causing the problem, then I can't remove it because the wireless keyboard won't connect/register any keypresses.

    Ok so, status report:
Wired keyboard is non responsive when I plug it in before/during boot. So i guess it needs to be plugged in before the iMac shut down. That's that out the window.
Plugged in headphones and I can't hear the startup chime so don't know when to start holding buttons.
To make matters worse, the wireless keyboard is no longer paired with the iMac, getting a green blinking light which indicates it wants to connect to a computer or device.
So I can't enter any commands whatsoever, can't remove the disk in the drive or boot safe mode. It's my worst nightmare.

  • Computer is shutting down right in the middle of things rop

It was doing this about a month ago. Just completely shutting down in the middle of the internet, iphoto, etc. and it wouldn't go to sleep, but kick off. I took it to the apple store and they said it was the power supply and fixed it.
Then yesterday, I was on the internet and it just kicked off, like the electricity went out, but it didn't. Just the computer went off. What could this problem be? hopefully it won't start doing to too often. Can the internet cause something like this? I wasn't working it hard or loading things up....

    Hi FM/AR,
Not likely the Internet could do it by itself, but what exact Mac do you have?
Boot off your Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some models have a separate AHT CD.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

  • HELP, new ipod shuts down computer in the middle of updating.........

We have a new ipod, that when I connect to our computer, begins the downloading process but shuts down our whole system half way through. Anybody know what is happening. I have tried everything I know how to do, but this only happens when I connect the new ipod. I've even exchanged the ipod, but the same result. I've tried to reinstall the software, but I think I've got a mess now. Any ideas?

First do some scanning. Scan the system with your antivirus program. Scan the system with a malware program like ewido http://www.ewido.com. Use windows chkdsk to scan the system and the registry (if you need help with this just say so)
Goto the PC makers site and install all the updates for your system, especailly BIOs Chipset IDE controller and USB updates.

  • TS1884 How do you cope with a system that shuts itself down after a safe boot progress bar is completed?

How do you resolve a problem with a system that shuts itself down after a safe reboot and when the progress bar is completed? Thanks.

Thanks for you response - the honest answer is I don't know, not being particularly IT literate. I do know however that I'm running Maverick if that is of any help?
I also tried the Command R route, along with holding some other keys as per the Apple troubleshooting guide, but no luck. My wife pointed out though that the system was running slowly over the last few days and we had quite a lot of the 'spinning beach ball' before being able to undertake tasks.
Lastly, I inserted my start up disk bit as the system is unable to start I'm now unable to retrieve it. All-in-all a real pain.
    Appreciate any advice. Many thanks.

  • TS1884 What if the Safe Boot progress bar stops (around the 25%-30% mark)? Any other alternatives I have to get my MAcBook Pro to boot without running into an error?

    Hi,
after starting my MacBook Pro I was faced with a grey screen stating that "an error has occurred, you need to restart your computer". I did that multiple times but the same message appeared each time. So I started the Safe Boot. Now the progress bar is stuck at the 25-30% progress mark since 30 min. Any advise on what to do from here?
Any help and advise is much appreciated!

I doubt that shutting it off will do any harm but don't do it too often.

  • My new iMac shuts down in the process of setting up Windows

Hi, i use an iMac and I also have Leopard installed. Recenetly i picked up a windows xp home edition cd, and decided to check out bootcamp. I followed the instructions, and when i am setting up windows in the blue screen menus, my iMac shuts down while formatting the selected drive. And when i turn it on, it brings me back to the first set up menu. It's very frustrating because i have to eject the CD holding down the mousebutton after a failed attempt at installing. Any ideas on how to successfuly set up the windows?

i'm having this exact problem.. whew i thought i'd have to send it in. it installs perfectly on my macbook pro. i eventually got to a point where it worked (after trying over 20 times) i hope i didn't damage my system. eventually parallels wouldn't sync with it so i ended up reformatting and am trying to get it working again.

  • IMac shuts down automatically

An imac(2009) has been acting weird for almost a year already.
    Here's the problem:
the system would shut down itself automatically, the screen going into a quick flash and the imac is power off unexpectedly. However, the problem only happens when you're using iMac. If I just let iMac open without using it (Ex; internet, or apps whatever), then nothing would happen.
My dad once took iMac to the reseller store in order to solve the problem, but the tester said everything were going right. And the problem has been perplexing me for a long time, just want to know is there anyone has an idea for me to deal with it.
P.S. And the problem seems have nothing to do with the version of system. From 10.6 to 10.8, the problem still happens.

Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem  & the Startup right after that for clues.
What all is connected at home that wouldn't be at the reseller?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • My imac shuts down unexpectedly and now a fan is running??

    Hello,
I have been working on my iMac all morning and it shut down twice within a half hour and I had to press the start button on the back to get it going again. Now their is a loud fan running and I have no idea what is going on. Help much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Hi ebeugs,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your iMac shut down unexpectedly, and the fan is running unusually fast or loud, you may need to reset the System Management Controller.
I recommend following this troubleshooting method:
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC.  Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
If the iMac unexpectedly shuts down again, or the fan continues running unusually fast or loud, follow these steps:
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
You can find these steps and more information about resetting the SMC here:
