What is the best apple product for my wife?
Hello all,
I recently broke our Windows laptop (stepped on it and cracked the screen). The price on replacing this screen makes me feel, that I should go the extra mile and just replace the thing since it was sort of up there in age anyway.
So here is where I need you guys. I have heard that Macs are excellent products, but I know VERY little. My wife and I have been with windows our entire lives. I sincerely apologize for the "noob" questions, but googling for a couple hours has left me with little first hand experience that fits us well. With that being said...First question:
Is there anything a typical Windows user will have trouble adjusting to?
For example, I know the iphone/ipod touch don't use flash. Are the macs the same? I read that they dumped flash in 2010? Can you still use it if you wanted to? Is there an alternative? But what I'm really getting at is, how hard will it be for us to transition? Are there typical windows features we may lose? Is it true that I'll no longer need anti-virus software?
Is the MacBook Air right for us? Ipad 2? MacBook Pro?
One reason I want a Mac, as I've said, is that I've heard that they are the best. I want to give my wife a very good gift. She never gets anything top of the line for herself and I want to spoil her with this surprise without her being able to tell me "no". Therfore, I want this new item to tailor to her more than me.
She mainly uses the laptop for pleasure. She loves to browse sites...read articles...and most of all, check up with friends on facebook. She is also really really into pictures and editing. She loves to take pictures and create little videos with music and whatever and I've heard that the Macs have pretty good software for this (Does it come standard?).
Anyway, while this will be pleasure over business 95% of the time, she may need word processing capability. This is likely to be extremely light work. Example would be listing DVDs we own. Possibly touching up a resume... She's been interested in writing a book though, so maybe this has the potential to upgrade to more business (I guess I may have just eliminated the ipad, huh?).
So is there a type of apple product that seems to scream out for my wife?
Also, If it has any weighing in this decision, we both own ipods.
I very sincerely thank you guys for reading my wall of text. I am happy to read links if you have any good ones to share instead of writing yourselves. I know I've overwhelmed you guys with a ton of questions. And I'm sorry if this is a topic you get all the time, but I figured I'd give it a try to make the best decision I can!

These are some great questions, hopefully I can answer them appropriately for you.
MacBook Pro vs. MacBook Air vs. iPad 2
The good news, outside of an optical drive, those first two are pretty similar in terms of functionality and features. Throw the iPad 2 into the sequence and it changes things significantly.
While the iPad 2 is an exceptional product with near limitless features, thanks to the App Store, it still requires a computer. It can wirelessly print, but how did that printer get setup? It can stream over AirPlay to your Apple TV, but how did that AppleTV get setup? Not to mention, having your media backed up is always a good idea.
There are two big differences between the MacBook Air & MacBook Pro and it's something to consider.
1.) How often do you need peripheral ports?
The MacBook Air has 2 USB ports, a MiniDisplay Port and a headphone jack. It does not have a FireWire port, it does not have an Ethernet port, it only has an SD card slot on the 13" model, it also does not have an optical drive.
Are these important to your wife? Will she routinely be burning, writing to or reading from CDs/DVDs? If so, you'll need to purchase an external drive and tie up one of your USB ports or purchase a hub. It also does not have an Ethernet port and in order to gain access to one you need to buy an external adapter that again ties up a USB port. It also only supports 10/100 connections, not 10/100/1000.
There's no doubt that CD/DVD media is in a decline, soon just about everything is going to be available via direct downloads and many things already are so maybe that's not important. Given the device's portability and how many places have WiFi you could justify not needing an Ethernet port. Most manufacturers default their peripheral connection for external media to USB, FireWire is very Mac specific and often times adds a premium price onto the accessory. Gigabit Ethernet is negligible for day-to-day usage, unless you're moving multi-GB files on a routine basis.
2.) What sort of potential growth opportunities do you need?
One glaring limitation to the MacBook Air is that you cannot upgrade the RAM or HD capacity, something that you can do on the MacBook Pro. OWC does make 3rd party flash storage but it's very expensive, especially when you compare it against platter drives.
Storage will vary from user-to-user. I have probably 50GB worth of media between photos, music, videos, etc. My wife on the other hand? Well over 1TB of content and although she doesn't access it daily, it's frequent enough where it prompted us to get a NAS solution for our apartment.
RAM is one of those things that you can never have enough of in computing. You won't hear someone way: "Wow, this computer is way too fast." Unless you're trying to install a computer game from the early 90s.
I encourage you, if you end up with the MBA, to consider the upgrade to 4GB of RAM. I question how relevant 2GB of RAM will be on a computer in 2 or 3 years and what the demands of programs will require then.
Get to an Apple Store
Go early in the morning during the week or late one weeknight an hour or so before the store closes. Spend 20-30 minutes with each of the three products you're considering. They're all preloaded with software, games, productivity applications, sample galleries, etc. Ask the people on the floor to let you discover uninterrupted but be nearby when you're done and have some Q&A. Don't let them dry to "drive" your experience or prattle about how awesome and magical it is. They don't know exactly what you'll be using it for and if you tell them you're brand new Apple they'll usual try to show you what they like, not what you might like by blind discovery.
Macromedia Flash & Applications
Flash does not work on iOS devices (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPhone) but it works just fine on the MacBook Pro & MacBook Air. Every new Mac will come with iLife which includes: iPhoto, Garageband, iMovie, iDVD and iWeb. They're fantastic programs and are "gateway" products to Apple's next tier of products:
iPhoto -> Aperture
Garageband -> Logic
iMovie & iDVD -> Final Cut
iWeb is the red-headed stepchild in this equation. You'd graduate to an Adobe product like Dreamweaver if you suddenly became interested in web-design.

What is the "iTunes Music" folder for?
I am looking for confirmation that it is a folder dedicated to holding converted files that i already have stored on my pc, and not doubles... Converted from WMA to w/e
Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
If you have upgraded from version 8 (or earlier) to iTunes 9 (or later) at some point, then your media folder (everything inside the red outline) may still be called *iTunes Music* instead of *iTunes Media*. The extra Music folder inside the media folder is used if you have allowed iTunes to *Upgrade to iTunes Media Organization* (iTunes 9) or used *File > Library > Organize Library > Reorganize files in the folder "iTunes Media"* (iTunes 10). Depending on your choices for *Keep iTunes Media folder organized* and *Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library* plus a little bug in which one build changed the name of the file storing the choice of layout it is quite easy for some of your files to be organized according to one layout and some the other.
Assuming you're happy letting iTunes organize your files the following steps should tidy things up (should it be necessary):
1. Select *File > Library > Organize Library... >* Tick *Reorganize files in the folder "iTunes Media"* and click OK. Skip if this option is greyed out (already upgraded) or you prefer the older layout.
2. Select *File > Library > Organize Library... >* Tick *Consolidate files* and click OK. This will bring any files currently organised outside the designated media folder into it.
NB This will create duplicate copies of any file that needs to be consolidated, and you will need to manually clean up afterwards. If space is at a premium try my scripts Unconsolidated to find out what would need moving and ConsolidatebyMoving to move rather than copy it.
3. Select *Edit > Preferences > Advanced* tab, uncheck *Keep iTunes Media folder organized* and click OK.
4. Select *Edit > Preferences > Advanced* tab, check *Keep iTunes Media folder organized* and click OK. This triggers iTunes into reorganizing everything according to your preferences.
5. (Optional) Close iTunes, rename the folder *iTunes Music* as *iTunes Media* then restart iTunes. Check under *Edit > Preferences > Advanced* tab that the location has automatically updated. If you can't access the media for any reason just undo the folder rename.
6. (Optional - Windows only) If Windows Media Player has ever had access to your files it may have liberally scattered folder artwork files about which iTunes won't tidy up when it reorganizes things, thus leaving behind a heap of folders with artwork and no media. PS If you really prefer the older layout, but it is already in the new one then edit the file called *.iTunes Preferences.plist* in your media folder and change the integer from 1 to 0 before doing step 3.

What are the Best Recommended Products for Mac OS X Server (Apache and ???)
I investigated Oracle and PHP combo for robust database services to be able to create forms, store employee applications, resumes, do financial requests, invoices, ecommerce stuff, document and lists collaboration like Microsoft Sharepoint using Internet Information Services (IIS) and SQL Server, etc. What are recommended products that I can easily develop in to code and do the requested stuff using Mac current (Apache and ????) technologies?
Of course it depends on your needs, but the OS X server already comes with Apache, Ruby On Rails, Python, Perl and SQL.

ITunes Match Skipping for months. 2 seperate apple staff promise to call back and never do!
Dear all,
I loved iTunes match for almost a couple of years. However for the last 3 months or so what ever songs I add to my iTunes library on my iMac and then send to iTunes match will not play on either my iPhone, or iPad. I am extremely annoyed about the whole thing as I have phoned Apple technical support on 2 separate occasions and gone through all the usual try this and try that. I have even restored my iPhone and iPad but still it does not work. Strangely all songs work fine on my Apple TV's and my iTunes library on my iMac.
What annoys more than it not working is the fact that I have had 2 members of staff promise to look into it and call me back, they never do! I have had a direct email for the 2nd member of staff and even had a few replies from him arranging a suitable time to call but he didn't. I then tried to email him the other day to find that the email got an automated reply saying no such address. I can only assume the member of staff in question has left?
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE someone help. Apple staff - do you read these posts? If so SOMEONE CALL ME BACK!
For the record all devices are up to date. I even upgraded to ios8 and have even bought an iPhone 6 but the problem still occurs.
I love Apple and their products but this is a complete shambles. 3 months of a service I cannot use and my subscription is about to renew. I am a music teacher so this feature used to be great. I think I will not be using this anymore unless it gets fixed asap?
Can Apple wipe the iTunes Match data for my account so I start again and upload my library as if all brand new?
Moan over I await a response but I won't hold my breath.I have probably spent 15 hours over 3 months trying to solve this problem.......to no avail.

The iTunes libraries on both machines appear to be in sync, though I don't know if Home Sharing or iTunes Match is to thank for the consistency. But the iTunes Media Folder locations are different on the MBP and MBA, and I don't know if they should point to the same storage location (it's been on a drive connected to our Airport for years). I also don't know what options for Copying Files and Keeping iTunes Organized should be on the MBA. I certainly don't want the media files duplicated yet the devices sharing a cloud version.
I hoped the MBA would act like an iOS device using iTunes Match in that music would stream unless downloaded. Then downloaded music would have to be managed (deleted from the MBA's iTunes) for space reasons at some regular intervals-- just like we now do on the iPhones and iPad. The library entry for the song would remain... just the locally stored file would be deleted and the iCloud download would change back to the download symbol.
But if a purchase is made from the iTunes store on the MBA, the file is stored on the local MBA machine as well as the external drive because the MBP receives the song via Home Sharing and downloads the file.Each iTunes client will expect a discrete iTunes library location. The iTunes Match service will allow the libraries to be automatically synchronised along with any IOS devices that are also registered for iTunes Match.
Following making a secure backup for any given library it is possible, once Songs have been 'matched' or 'uploaded' to remove the local copies and play the Songs from the Cloud. The behaviour on IOS devices is different, they will download each Song as it is played.
Note: Apple is very clear that the responsibility for maintaining music files remains with the user - so it remains essential to ensure that you have your own Songs secure backed up prior to relying on the Cloud. Should there be an issue with the Cloud resulting in loss of Songs you will need your own secure backup. -
My IPhone 5 will not recognize that I have an Itunes Match account. When I try to turn the Itunes Match button on in settings I get a mesage saying I am not subscribed to ITunes Match. This does not happen with my Ipad. Any Ideas what to do?

I have a large music library on my iPad, that is not currently on iCloud or on my main PC. If I sign up for iTunes Match, and then turn the iTunes Match on my iPad, will the music library from the iPad that is not currently in iCloud move to the iCloud? Or will I loose all that music?

I don't have internet access - I can't email it, or mobileme it, or dropbox it.iTunes. Other than that there is no direct method. However, do try the iPhone forums.

Minimally you need Snow Leopard or greater:

I have icloud 55 GB. Preview on Mac accept my photos, but if my Mac got stolen I lose my photos on iCloud too? Preview keep the original on the 'invisible' Library, so, make noo sense, I need the local storage.

It sounds like you have an Aperture album that you are trying to transfer to the album section of the Photos app on your iPad. I recommend following these steps to sync the Aperture album over to your iPad:
To sync photos from a Mac or Windows PC to your device using photo applications
Select "Sync Photos from."
Choose the application you want to sync photos from in the pop up menu.
Choose to sync all photos or selected photos. Select "Include videos" to sync videos stored with your photo library.
Click Apply.

By 'could not sign up' and 'can not add my billing information' you mean ... ? Did you get any error messages ?
iTunes gift cards are an alternative way of paying for content from the store. They are not available in all countries and they are country-specific (they can only be used in their country of issue) - so they may not be available where you are, so you may not be able to fill that field in. -

You want to 'reverse engineer' the compressed mpeg2 DVD file back to something iMovie can use?
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:

Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.
