just got iphone today. was charged when i purchased it. now it's dead. plugged in to charge, but not able to power up iphone. so how do i know if it's charging?

If the screen doesn't light up with a chargining indicator after 20 minutes (at the most), then there's an issue somewhere. Try plugging the iPhone into iTunes instead, and try a different USB cable if possible.

I have to agree this is the most annoying thing about the iPhone. The chirp when it charges. I had a situation the other night where my phone was on analog roam (uses a lot of power) and ever couple of minutes it would chirp (assume it was because it found a network, charged, and then went analog and discharged and the cycle repeated!!).
The phone was next to my bed since I use it as an alarm clock. Basically using the mute switch toatally makes the iPhone usesless as an alarm clock which is why it was next to my bed! Apple seriously needs to fix this issue.

I got an iPhone 5 about 5 months ago, and the charger that came with it has already started to fail. I have to twist it a lot before it's in a position that it's happy to charge my phone in. My phone went dead today and so I can't tell whether it's charging or not by the bar at the top, and I was wondering if there is a way to tell whether it's charging when it's dead? When I hold the top button, it comes up with a flashing red battery sign with a plug a the bottom of the screen with a lightning bolt over it. Is there a different image shown when the device is charging?
I can't get a new charger until tomorrow.

Since I upgraded to the latest version of IOS, is worse. The wi-fi does not work anymore, 3G network makes it even more hard to get, some apps that should work, close or take a long time to load, even the screen to make phone calls has long recharge times. Do you have suggestions? Thank you!

you could monitor data usage in settings/general/usage. if it is a problem for you you might go to settings/notifications and turn off notifications from apps that you don't want to receive notifications from. also try turning off cellular datain settings/general/cellular. you might turn off push notification for email in settings/mail/fetch new data and just manually check for email messages rather than have the phone do it constantly

Did you buy it from Apple or an Apple authorized reseller and did you specifically request an unlocked iPhone?
Otherwise, there is no way to tell from the phone itself. Stick a SIM card in it and see if it works would be one test. Plug it into iTunes and update or restore it, then try a SIM and see if it works would be a better test.
