HT1481 If my I Pod is formatted for Mac, How do I make is windows freindely?

My Ipod is formatted for mac. I have windows 7 please help.

This is the iPod shuffle category, but if this is about an iPod classic, it will need to be "reformatted" for Windows, using the Restore process in iTunes.  This will erase (reformat) the iPod, re-install its software, and set it to default settings.
iTunes needs to be installed on the computer.

When you initially connect the iPod to that Windows PC, iTunes should prompt you to do a Restore.
(If this is actually about an iPod shuffle, please post back.)

  • IPod Formatted for Mac... Connect To Windows?

    Hi Gang:
I gave a friend of mine a 60 GIG iPod as a gift. He is in the middle of the Jungle and uses a PC, no access to a Mac. He has a few songs he would like to add to the iPod. I formatted the iPod when I got it for Mac. When he connects it to his PC it wants to re-format the iPod for Windows, of course he would loose all the data on it.
Is there a way to use it under Windows without having to re-format the iPod and lose all the data?
    Thank you, Glenn

"Is there a way to use it under Windows without having to re-format the iPod and lose all the data?"
Yes but it requires the use of some add on software such as XPlay2.
The reason being is that Windows cannot read the HFS+ file system that a Mac formatted iPod uses, so without XPlay or similar software, it needs to be reformatted in order to use it on a Windows PC.

  • Originally formatted for Mac, now need to use with Windows....

I have a 1st Gen iPod Mini that I had formatted and used (rarely) with my Mac. I now want to wipe it clean and sync it to my iTunes for Windows (7.0.1.8). I am using a brand new Apple Dock Connector to USB 2.0 since my PC isn't able to handle the Firewire cable the Mini came with.
I connected my Mini to my PC (new Dell laptop) and it pops up a dialogue box stating that the iPod appears corrupted and advised Restoring and/or disconnecting and reconnecting. I reconnected and that did not fix. I then tried to Restore and got this error: "Problem downloading software; requested resource not found".
I CAN see my iPod in iTunes. I've read a number of different links but I'm at a loss. I think that what I need to do is reformat my Mini to use iTunes for Windows but can't seem to get that far. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this is...suprise...supposed to be a holiday gift for someone! Thanks.

  • IPod formated for MAC - How to get songs to PC??

I have music on an iPod that was given to me but in MAC format. Anyway to get these songs to my PC based iTunes w/o losing them? I have access to a MAC but prefer not to have to borrow it.

    Won't "Restore" erase those songs?
    Yes.

Since I upgraded to 10.9.5, my macbook no longer recognizes my external  hard drive. How do I fix this?  External hard drive is a 1TB Toshiba formatted for mac.  Worked fine until latest upgrade.

Solved the problem by dumping my external HD onto another computer. Re-formatting and re-installing the data.  Not what I wanted to do but it solved the problem.

  • IPod is formatted for windows but i need it formatted for mac

i just got my iPod a couple days ago used from best buy and hooked it up from my mac not aware that it was formatted for windows. when i try to restore my iPod it just freezes up my computer. do i really need it formatted for mac in order to get good performance?

Right. If you restored it in Windows the iPod will still be formatted for Windows.
Now see if you can restore it on your mac.
Also, know that Windows-formatted iPods work fine in Mac OS X. The only "problem" is that you cannot update the iPod's software on your mac if another software version is released. You would have to do that through Windows.
If you plan on using your iPod with both Operating Systems, you may want to keep it formatted for Windows.

I see 10.6.3 in your profile---is tthat what you are trying to load? If so, it won't work. No PowerPC Mac like your G5 can run a Mac OS version higher than 10.5.8

  • Will files saved on an external HD, formatted for Mac, be readable on a Windows machine?

Will files saved on an external HD, formatted for Mac, be readable on a Windows machine?

Only if the Windows computer has software such as MacDrive installed or the drive is hooked up to a Mac or AirPort Extreme and shared over a network.

  • External drive is suddenly read-only, yet is formatted for Mac

I've had a 1TB external hard drive for the last year and never had a problem with it until now. Suddenly, it is showing as read-only, however, it's formatted for Mac. How am I able to fix this? Do I have to re-format it?

Usually that means the drive is malfunctioning. Back up all data on it, if you haven't already done so, then erase and restore. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it.

  • Can an iPod formatted for Macs play on Windows iTunes?

I have an iPod formatted for a Mac but have to use a Windows computer at work. Is there a way to play my iPod through the Windows iTunes player? I tried plugging it int through a USB adaptor, but my computer doesn't trecognize my iPod.
    Thanks!

If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). There are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows. XPlay for instance gets good reviews, you can find it at this link: XPlay 2
XPlay is currently only compatible with Windows XP, 2000, Me or 98SE, a new version for Vista is planned for release later this year.

  • External Hard Drive Formatted For Mac

    Hello,
Can some one please point to a link to an external hard drive that comes formatted for Mac out of the box? My 90 year old mother-in-law needs a time machine backup and would freak out if I tried to guide her through Disk Utility to reformat the external drive she just bought from Radio Shack. So an out-of-the-box plug-n-play drive would work best for her.
Does anyone know of any? I know LaCie is/was Mac focused, but I need to have a drive that is ABSOLUTELY Mac plug-n-play when it gets delivered to her house.
    Thanks!

Do you Skype with her? Seems like you could just do a Skype call and share her screen so you can literally tell her to click this, click that. I've done exactly this with my mother across the Atlantic to solve a different problem. If she's capable of plugging the new drive into the Mac (which it sounds like you intend her to do anyway), I'd have to believe she'll be able to follow your instructions if you can tell her which options to click. Formatting a drive is relatively few clicks. And, I think this wouldn't be any harder than figuring out how to setup Time Machine...

  • My Ipod is formatted for Mac, but I need to download audiobook from Windows

My Ipod is formatted for my Mac, and my entire library is in it. However, I need to download a audiobook from my library , and when I connect my Ipod to my Windows PC, it is telling me that I need to restore it , which means that I will
loose what I already have on it.
    Help
      Mac OS X (10.4.9)

If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive. There are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows. XPlay and MacDrive for instance get good reviews. XPlay is an iPod specific program, MacDrive is more general and lets you access various types of Mac formatted drives on Windows such as CDs, DVDs, hard drives etc:
    XPlay 2
    MacDrive
You can read another user's experience of using XPlay at this link: iPod on Mac and Windows

  • Formatted for mac; Connect to PC?

My iPod touch is formatted for mac. Can I safely connect it to a PC and sync from the iTunes on that PC?

Only PC formatted iPods can be dumped music from a PC.
As PC formatted iPod can be synced with both an Mac and a PC, your best bet is to move its contents to your mac with an iPod to Mac software.
    Format your iPod to PC.
Put the music back to it from your Mac.
Transfer that music from your iPod to the PC.
    Synchronize it with the PC.

  • Have airport extreme, square model, have a external harddrive to use as back up(formated for mac)hooked it up to the usb port in back. can't find it on my computer. what am i doing wrong

have the airport extreme, square model. have a external harddrive formated for mac hooked up to the usb port in back.
i can't find the harddrive on the computer for back up in timemachine. what am i doing wrong?

First, if you are not aware, you need to know that Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme.
That may be part of the problem here, so if you want to continue to try this, you need to understand that there are no guarantees of success.
Some users do seem to be able to make this work, but most have some problems and some....like me....have nothing but problems when they try this.
If you want to continue to try this, the first thing to verify is that the drive is formatted specifically in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Have you verified that the drive is formatted correctly by connecting it directly to your Mac and using Disk Utility to check?
Some drives that are advertised as being "compatible for Mac" are not formatted correctly in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Time Machine has no chance of success unless the drive is first formatted correctly.
I would also ask that you consider leaving the drive connected to your Mac for Time Machine backups. That will be supported, and is a far more reliable way to keep backups if your data is important to you.
Next, we need to know what operating system you are running on your Mac. If you do not know, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen and then click About This Mac.  Post back with the OS X Version number that you see there.
