HT1490 How to use MacbookPro 15inch (late 2011) battery?

When i bought this laptop, the technician told me that since the battery is not removable, I should
1. plug the power adapter when the battery is left around 15-20% .
2. plug it out when it is green and battery is 100% so that battery will not be over charged.
So that means I'll constantly be using the battery? Aren't the computer automatically stop the charging when the battery is full? because when it is full, the system report indicated under charging information that the battery is not charging, and power source: power adapter.
3. I've been following point 1 and 2 for the past few weeks and found out that my 100% charged battery lasted only 2-3hrs with full brightness and Adobe Photoshop CS4 on, I've been using my macbook white mid 2007 in similar style but with a swollen battery and it lasted 2hrs as well. So I suspect that maybe I need a calibration so I found this article but it says no calibration needed. Really?
4. I also read something about raid utility which automatically calibrate the battery so i clicked raid utility to check out but a window pops out and said raid utility is not supported in this computer.
I am very confused can someone tell me what is the correct way to keep a longer lifespan for battery? And if the information that i got is correct? Thanks a bunch!

Responses to your queries:
1.  Yes, if you reach that level.
2.  you cannot overcharge the battery.  The MBP will not allow that.  When you see 100%, the power adapter is powering the MBP.
3.  Full brightness and Adobe software will put a large load on your battery.  2-3 hours is not out of line for that situation.  Use the power adapter instead.  Swollen batteries should be replaced.  Calibration for new MBPs is not needed.
4.  I am not familiar with what you are refering to.

9 months 94 cycles and its health is now at 89%

Does the system still run off the battery only? Does it run for a few hours off the battery only? Then No it is not defective and no Apple will do nothing for you and No Applecare does not cover Consumable items which the battery is one of those.
The only time Apple MAY, and that is BIG MAY, replace the battery is within the first year and only if Apple Deems the battery to be defective. Fat chance of that as long as the system runs off the battery for any length of time.

My Macbook Pro contains 2 memory slots, each of which accepts
    a 1333 MHz DDR3 memory module.
i want to upgrade to the maximum the RAM i have. I want to know what kind of RAM card could I get someone in this community to reccomend.
    thank you very much

One reason I favor OWC is that if you call them up and tell them that their RAM is malfunctioning, replacements are sent out that day, not when they get the bad RAM from you. There are a couple of forum colleagues who use Corsair RAM with no problems.  Macs seem to be very selective about RAM and some brands simply do not work properly in Macs.  OWC and Crucial have good track records, hence the recommendations.
I often grin when someone complains about an inexpensive or bargain part does not perform well in a Mac.  When one pays a premium price for a computer, I would think that quality should come before price for any add-ons or modifications.  It is like purchasing a Ferrari and then using regular gas.
If your replacement Corsair RAM is working, you should be just fine.  One bad experience should not condemn a manufacturer or vendor.

  • How much noise should a late 2011 MacBook Pro 13" make?

    Hello support community,
I am writing for your help concerning the noise level of my MacBook Pro 13". It is the entry level Mac, with the i5. My fan's are idling at 2000 rpm which I have been told is normal but I can hear them? When compared to my girlfriend's late 2010 MacBook, I can hear my fans, but I can't hear hers? Could anyone with the same model let me know if this is normal or I should visit an Apple Store.
    Regards

    Hi cjftw,
Did you solve your problem yet ?
I was wondering if the noise wasn't coming from the hard drive (when you put you ear on the right part near the track pad you can clearly hear this "fan" noise which actually comes form the hard drive) The actual fan in MBP is under the keyboard and located around the key "7" "8" "F7" "F8".
I seem to have the same issue as yours. My MBP is a late 2011 and my hard drive is a stock 750GB Toshiba.

  • MacBook Pro 13'' late 2011 battery health problem!!! HELP!!!

    I have a MacBook Pro 13'' late 2011.
It's this normal? How do I increase my battery health?
    Can I change my battery?

    When did you buy it?
Do you run it down to near zero % before recharging? Which is a bad thing to do.
Do you charge it to 100% before you take it off the charger?
Do you always disconnect the charger once it reaches 100% even if you are right next to an AC outlet. Which is a bad idea.
Batteries only last so long. Over use it and it will go bad sooner.

If the MBP operates while the charger is connected, the charger then is not the problem.  The data that you originally posted from System information>Power indicates that the battery is functional (normal).  That then indicates that there is a problem in the charging circuit.
You might open the MBP and disconnect and reconnect the battery.  You have to be careful not to short circuit the battery.
The best option is a trip to the Apple store genius bar.  This appears to be a hardware issue.
    Ciao.

  • HT1490 If I use my mabook pro 2011 more on AC power does it help increasing battery life

Help me in  understanding  this problem?

Even when you are constantly plugged into the AC outlet when you are using the MBP, the battery will slowly discharge during the times when it is idle.  When it drops below 95% charge level the battery will again be recharged to 100%.  These 5% discharges will eventually add up to an entire cycle.  This may take several weeks.
If you follow the instructions in the link provided by OrangeMarlin, you will gain the maximum useful life of your battery.
    Ciao.

  • MBP 13 Late 2011 Battery not reach until 7 hours

I just bought new MBP last week and when I charge it, only stand until 5 hours.. why this happen? is there any tips to make it can be used until 7 hours? my bluetooth's off and brightness is low but still just 5 hours.. i afraid that my MBP's battery is weaker from start.hope you guys can help me. thanks.

i have the same problem with my macbook pro 13" i5 2.4ghz. got it last black friday. earlier today, the battery capacity was at 98% but now, its down to 95%. should i be concerned?
aside from this, the only battery heavy application that i use would have to be online video streaming, with this, my battery could work without power for around 3hrs on very low screen light. huhuh i asked my friends with older MBP models (early 2011/late 2010) and she said, her laptop could go on for 7-8 hours with the same or similar programs but on full screen light.

The mbp will not boot or turn on.
Without being connected to a power source, none of the battery indicator lights come on when I push the little battery indicator light button.
Once I plug in the power cord and push the little battery indicator light button, the very left battery indicator light flashes on and off green.
    What does this mean?
I have detached the battery and re-attached the battery adapter to no avail. (Using the following instructions: http://www.spathi.net/tech-support/macbook-pro-wont-turn-on-charge-light-blinkin g-orange/)

If you have AppleCare, they will mail you the battery.
If you do not have AppleCare, call Customer Relations 1-800-767-2775. See what they can do for you. CS will determine if your model MBP qualifies for a free battery.

  • Help with my MBP (Late-2011) battery life~

    Hi All,
I just bought this MBP like 2 weeks ago & I found that the battery life is a little short.
Only lasted 3.5-4 hours. In saying that, I'm not doing anything extreme. Only browsing the web and doing some homework on Words & Excel.
If I happened to go on youtube or some video streaming site, the battery life only go as far as 2-2.5 hours.
Is this normal? I'm new to MBP & I'm loving every single bit of it.
I read the description on the website says the battery can last up to 7 hours.
I was wondering if my battery faulty or something? or is it just me?
I have turned down the brightness of the screen to about 40% and keyboard light is at about 20% (just estimate).
Turned off my bluetooth device. What else can I do to make the battery life last longer??
Any tips anyone can share with me?
    Thanks in advance !!

Late 2011 Macbook Pro refuses to boot. SMC reset does nothing. Have tried bypassing SMC (nothing).
Magsafe light glows very very faintly (barely visible in a room with lights on).
Have tried reseating the battery connector. Battery indicator status button illuminates no LEDS (despite it being charged before failing).
The mac didn't get wet. Was using a non apple USB cable at the time to tether/charge iphone. Computer just dead after working fine.
    Any ideas anyone. Logic board?
    Many thanks and best wishes
    Jamie

Is it a 15" or 17" MBP? There have been logic board issues with that model.
    https://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Pro
    For all models.
If it's a 13" take the bottom off and disconnect the battery:
    https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Late+2011+Battery+Repla cement/7649
So only do this through step #3!
Wait 10 seconds. Push the power button for 5 seconds. Wait 10 seconds. Reconnect the battery. Put the bottom back on don't screw it on just yet. Tape it temporarily in place and try to start it
Even if it's a 15" or 17" try this anyway.  Usually when graphics on the logic board fails there will have been anomalies beforehand.

Running a cable to the HDMI port is still supported. (and still works on mine).
If the Arrangement tab in System Preferences > Displays isn't present then it doesn't recognize the physical connection.  Double check all cables.  If that doesn't work try a PRAM reset:

I was able to find these instructions, however they referr to 2009-2011 27" iMacs. I think it's the same, if it's not then contact Apple directly for instructions. If either of the machines is less than 90 days old or covered by AppleCare then call AppleCare tomorrow for help, they should be able to easily answer this for you. You will find the number in your manual or you can use the AppleCare Contact Info link.
Your iMac should automatically recognize the presence of a digital video signal at the Mini DisplayPort and enter Target Display Mode.
If your iMac does not automatically enter Target Display Mode, press command + F2 to manually enter Target Display Mode.
