HT1498 Why is it taking 8 hours to download a rented movie?

Why is it taking 8 hours to load a rented movie on ITV?

Winston,
Converted HD movies for Apple TV are not more than 2.5MB stream in HD. Apple TV gen 1 wa capable of 5Mbit with less FPS, but not newer once. Where did you get 6 and 8Mbit from?
There is no need for that fast stream (sorry buddy but I work with streams quite a bit).
The problem could be not a speed, but crowdeed networks. If one uses WiFI on 2.4 GHz then in crowded areas you have issue of too many overlapping WiFI networks and time sharing channels. Only three channels in WiFi band 2.4GHz do not overlap, but there are still shared by neigbors.
That is the reason I run 5GHz Wirless-N as the only one in my neigborhood. No channel overlaps, no choppy network, no choppy movies.
That may not be an issue of stream speeds. Just ADSL 3Mbit would be fine. Trust me as I had that for long time with Apple TV before I switched to FiOS.
Apple TV is equipped with enough memory to buffer almost entire H.264 encoded High Definition movie so only start could be delayed if network is slower, but not by 8 hours.
Another possibility is that Apple network is busy which I experienced quite a bit in the past especially on Friday and Saturday evenings. Rentals that time were menace.

  • Why does it take hours to download a rented movie from iTunes.

When I rent a movie or TV show from iTunes with my AppleTV (2), the download starts and I get a message saying the download will take an an hour and 45 minutes to download.  Then when the download it complete and I start to play it, I get a message saying downloading - and the rental never starts.
My AppleTV (2) it running the latest version, and it's plugged directly into my router via ethernet.  I have reset the Apple TV, router and modem.
Netflix  and YouTube streaming through AppleTV are immediate and seem to work fine.

What is your actual internet speed? use www.speedtest.net and post the results.
A sustained 6 Mbit/s or faster Internet connection is recommended for viewing High Definition movies and TV shows, and a sustained 2.5 Mbit/s or faster Internet connection is recommended for Standard Definition content. Internet connection speeds may vary depending on your ISP and other factors.
Using Netflix or Youtuve is not a good test as Youtube is must lower quality than HD rentals, and Netflix uses a variable quality download system that reduces quality based on your internet speed.

  • Why will it take 26  hours to download a rented movie?

Why will it take 26+ hours to download a rented movie?

For watching a movie only the download speed matters, and 4 mbps is OK, not great but good enough to start streaming a movie in about 10 minutes or less (rentals don't have to download all the way to begin watching).
Something else is clogging the pipe ... is the ATV connected to the router via Ethernet, or over Wi-Fi?  Wi-Fi is normally faster than your ISP service, but there might be router settings that are getting in the way of the Wi-Fi connection.  Ethernet may be faster, at least to see if it works better, or there might be port settings on your router that need to be optimized (sorry, can't help you there).
I've also heard that changing your router's DNS address may help things (try OpenDNS's addresses "208.67.222.220" or "208.67.222.222", or Google's DNS "8.8.4.4" or "8.8.8.8").

  • Why does it take over 2 hours to download a rented movie on apple tv? When I download a movie on Netflix it downloads immediately.

Why does it take over 2 hours to download a rented movie on Apple TV?  When I download a movie from Netfix it is immediate.

The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
1080p HD movies require a recommended speed of 8 Mbps, 720p HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.
Netflix uses adaptive streaming and can reduce quality right down to produce a stream as low as 0.5 Mbps.

  • I just bought a new apple tv and it said that it takes 12 hours to download a rented movie

I just bought a new apple tv and it said it takes 12 hours to download a rented movie

It needs to load a portion before playback can start, the time it takes is dependent on your network.
What is your current connection via speedtest.net (at least 6mbps needed for instant HD)
Make sure DNS is set to auto (settings - general - network)
    If on wifi try ethernet
    Reboot ATV and router

  • Does anyone know why it is taking hours to download an OS7 upgrade?  i have fast FIOS connection and my connectivity is excellent at the moment.

Seems beyond strange.  I have tried multiple times over the last 24 hours and am still getting the same horribly poor performance.  Please help!

Forget the iPhone for a moment.
Will Sprint unlock any phone purchased from them to be used on another carrier?  If the answer is no, why should an iPhone be any different?
That being said, the 4S is a world phone meaning it has GSM and CDMA antennas.  The iPhone 4 is not.. it is either CDMA (Sprint/Verizon/Cricket) or GSM (AT&T, any number of European carriers, unlocked).
I have never personally known a CDMA carrier to "unlock" a device they sell to allow it to work on another network.  Both Sprint and Verizon will unlock the GSM portion of the 4S for International only use.
That $800+ dollar new phone you purchased still works perfectly fine as an iPod touch once off contract or can be sold to another Sprint user to recoup some of your investment.
In the end, it is a decision you have to make as to whether it is financially worthwhile to you to purchase a new phone every year.  If you can afford it financially and determine that it is worthwhile to you, then do so.  Otherwise, do like millions of others and wait until you are eligible for the subsidized pricing or enjoy your device for as long as you can until it finally dies or becomes too "slow" to use.  My 3GS is still running strong after 3+ years and my partner uses it daily as his primary phone/media player.

I'm on my iPad, so I don't know if this is the page with an actual download. I don't see a button, but assume that is because I  am on an iPad. It is in the DL section of Apple downloads.

  • Movie taking hours to download

This is the first and LAST time I purchase a darn rental from itunes.  Why does it take HOURS to download.  Had I known this I would have never rented a movie.  I popped some popcorn and my son and I sat down for a nice Saturday afternoon and what?  Nothing!  He has since gone to bed and this movie is still down loading!  What type of service business is this?  This is horrible and I will never use my appleTv again for this!

How fast is your internet - sounds as though it's 1Mbps or less?
For HD movies 6Mbps is needed for near instant playback.
AppleTv has to prebuffer much of the movie to allow uninterrupted playback if you have <6Mbps, how long this takes depends on the average connection speed - at 3.5 Mbps currently it takes around 40 mins for mine to buffer HD whereas Sd is near instant to play.
AppleTV2 has limited memory and using it to do other tyhings while a rental is prebuffering can flush any downloaded protion requiring you to start again from scratch - it can be better to rent in iTunes then once it's fully downloaded play on AppleTV under Computers>iTunes library>Rentals column.

It's likely network related, have you checked your internet download speed (speedtest.net) or tried anything to eliminate interference on you local network.

    Help

    Hello FeedUpUser,
Thank you for the question.  When you purchase a rental, you can view it on one device at a time:
Can I play my rental on more than one device?
If you download a rented movie on your computer: You can transfer it to a device such as your Apple TV (1st generation), iPhone, iPad, or iPod if it’s a standard-definition film (movies in HD can only be watched on your computer, iPad, iPhone 4 or later, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV). Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only exist on one device at a time.
If you download a rented movie on your iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV: It is not transferable to any other device or computer.

  • HT1657 Once I download a rented movie do I need Internet connection to watch

Once I download a rented movie on iTunes doi need Internet connection to watch it.

Please be aware of the movie rental's time limitation that you have 30 days from the time of rental to watch your movie, and once you start watching it, you have 24 hours to finish watching it. You may watch it as many times as you like during those 24 hours. It may be helpful to make sure the download completes successfully before you begin watching the movie.
Once the download is complete you can watch it without an Internet connection. However, an Internet connection to the iTunes Store is required to authorize playback or activate the 24 hours time-limit of movie rentals. This means, only during the starting of the movie. Once you have started playing the movie rental, internet connection is not required. You can play anywhere without internet connection.
For more information on movie rentals, you can visit:
iTunes Store: Movie rental frequently asked questions (FAQ)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1657
Note: 24 hours time limit is for United States customer only, while 48 hours for other countries.
