HT1515 which version of Airport Utility is needed for my Airport Express A1084????

How can I find out which version of Airport Utility is needed for my Airport Express A1084????

I have this issue, too. The problem with the advice from Saito_Chickara is that Mavericks (I'm on 10.9.2) does not allow you to run AirPort Utility 5.x. So for those of us on Mavericks, what can we do? I have yet to find a solution. This is really frustrating.

  • Which version of Airport Express do I have?

    Hi --
We just moved into a new place and we're having some trouble getting the wireless network to reach all the corners of the house. I have an old Airport Extreme that is helping somewhat but not great so I am considering upgrading our Time Machine to the newer dual band version. I'd like to know whether the Airport Extreme can take advantage of a/g/n -- is there a way to tell which version / generation of Airport Extreme I own?
    Thanks,
    Ramon

Dual band can be a bit confusing because at the default settings, "n" devices can connect to either the 5 GHz band or 2.4 GHz band.
The dual band Time Capsules and AirPort Extreme broadcast both bands simultaneously, and it's up to the computer to automatically choose the best connection. It does this based on a formula only known to Apple engineers that compares the network speed, signal strength, noise and who knows what else.
In other words if you have a dual band Time Capsule or AirPort Extreme set up in the default dual band Radio Mode, it's not possible to know in advance whether an "n" capable computer will connect to the 2.4 GHz band or the 5 GHz band....unless you assign a different name to the 5 GHz band and specifically "point" computers to that network.
Slower "b" and "g" devices will always connect to the 2.4 GHz band because they have no other choice. They can't connect to 5 GHz.
If your "n" computer is connected to the 5 GHz band, the throughput can approach 270-300 Mbps, which is more than twice as fast as "n" at 2.4 GHz. So, there's a distinct advantage to having the computer connect at 5 GHz (if it can)....wireless backups or file transfers are going to occur in half the time or less.
The downside to 5 GHz, rarely mentioned in the snazzy marketing materials, is that these signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals, so they do not penetrate walls or obstructions nearly as well as 2.4 GHz signals. You really almost have to have a line-of-sight relationship between the computer and router for 5 GHz to work most effectively. Many users have been very disappointed to learn that their new Mac is not connecting at 5 GHz several rooms away from the wireless router. It chooses the slower 2.4 GHz band instead because it "sees" a stronger signal there. If there are also "b" and "g" devices on the 2.4 GHz band at the time, the "n" devices are slowed down even further.
If your budget allows, the dual band option +may possibly+ provide you with a significant increase in performance. It's nice to have the option to enable a separate Guest network as well. But, there are never any guarantees with wireless. My advice would be to think carefully about where devices will be located as this will have a huge effect on the performance that can be achieved on the network.

  • Which version of windows 7 is needed for vmware fusion 5 - 32 or 64 bit

I just downloaded VMWare Fusion 5 and am in the process of getting Windows 7 from the Microsoft Store. Which version of windows is needed to run properly on my Mac - 32-bit or 64-bit? I believe it's the .iso application too, right?

32 or 64 makes little difference, and when you are not running Windows (Fusion) your Mac has all the power it had before you installed Windows.

  • Which version of Thunderbird do I need for Mac OSx 10.4.11

I am using an eMac, PowerPC G4, running OSx 10.4.11 while I repair an iMac 2006 17” 1.8g Intel core duo, 1.5gb RAM, 500gb HD which I hope will run OSx 10.6.
Outlook sucks! And the Apple "Mail" won't work at all. So which version of Thunderbird can I run and how do I get it? I used Firefox and Thunderbird on my 2.1gHz PC 10 years ago: loved it; hated the PC and Bilious Gutts.

  • AirPort Utility doesn't support my version of AirPort Express  802.11n

I have OS X Yoesmite installed and now my AirPort Utility doesn't support the version of AirPort Express  802.11n . Any advice?

AirPort Utility 6.3.4 in Yosemite does support both versions of the  802.11n AirPort Express.
What is the model number of your AirPort Express?  If you are not sure, look on the side or bottom of the Express. The model number starts with an "A" followed by four numbers.
Hard to see the model number.....you may need a magnifying glass and good lighting.

  • HT1515 Mavericks does not anymore support former versions of Airport Express Setup tool. Any suggestion ?

Maverick's Airport Express setup tool (>= v6) is no longer supporting old versions of Airport Express device.
I could not notice this limitation before moving to Mavericks, and so far, I have no other alternative than buying a more recent version of Airport Express to be able to reconfigure it to fit in my new home wifi configuration.
Is anyone facing the same issue ?
Such an obsolescence planning is unacceptable from Apple. They shoud solve this mistake through a new release of the Airport Express configuration tool, but at this point I'm not really sure they will do it one day...
Is anyone also frustrated or upset with this ?
    Thanks,
    Philippe.

There are literally hundreds of posts on this topic that offer a number of solutions. You may want to search the Discussions forum to access them ... and yes, there are a number of frustrated users due to this.
Basically you have the following choices:
Use a Mac running an earlier OS X version that supports v5.6 of the AirPort Utility.
Run a virtual machine on your Mac that is running an earlier OS X version.
    Use a Windows-based PC.
Update to a newer base station.
There are also a couple of other solutions / "hacks" that involve Terminal edits or using script files that are not supported by Apple.

Any licensing questions are always best addressed by a trained Microsoft licensing specialist.  You can find whom to call by looking at www.microsoft.com/licensing.
One of the built-in rights of a Windows Server license is the right to run earlier versions of the operating system.  So if you purchase either Standard or Datacenter, you can run 2008 Standard.
However, that does not provide the media or activation codes for earlier versions of the operating sytem.  You have to obtain those via other channels.  You should most likely contact a Microsoft reseller and talk to them.  They will
most likely have a trained licensing specialist on hand to help answer your questions, and they should also be able to provide media for earlier distributions (for a slight fee).

  • Need help setting up Airport Express A1084 in Windows 7 via Netgear WNDR4500 wireless router

Hello All. I bought a used Airport Express A1084 off the net. Never had one before. My intention is to remotely control (via my iPhone using Apples Remote app or possibly XBMC) a "pc with music" and stream thru the AE connected to a boombox. I want to be able to take AE and boombox to the front yard, back yard, garage, or wherever my Netgear WNDR4500 will reach.
So far I have hit the reset on the AE and while holding, plugged it in to power (still holding) until the green light blinked. I let it go. Waited for it to complete booting (slow blinking yellow/amber light). The AE did not show up in Airport Utility ver 5.6.1. I uninstalled that version and installed older Airport Utility ver 5.4.2. Same results. I power cycled the router, turned off the Norton 365 firewall, and still get nothing. At one point though, I walked away for a while (an hour or so), came back and saw the AE listed in the left window pane of Airport Utility. I thought maybe I just didn't wait long enough so I clicked Manual Setup and it started to read the AE but Errored 10057. I tried again and got same error. I refreshed and the AE was gone.
Can someone tell me how to correct this so I can confirm I didn't buy a "brick"?
    Thanks in advance,
    Tom

Just so you are aware, the A1084 AirPort Express is a 802.11b/g wireless router that can only operate on the 2.4 GHz band. Regardless, it can be configured to join the wireless network provided by the Netgear as long as that network is configured to be backwards compatible with 802.11g clients. However, in the long run for performance, you do NOT want any non-"n" wireless clients connecting to your Netgear's network.
The 5.6.1 version of the AirPort Utility for Windows does not support the non-"n" version of the AirPort base stations. You would need to use an earlier version that will still run on Windows 7.
One thing to try would be to temporarily connect the Express directly to your PC using an Ethernet cable, and then, try accessing it with the AirPort Utility. If you are still unable to do so, you may have gotten yourself a defective unit.
