HT1526 deleting selected files (only) from trash

How do I securely and permanently delete selected files from the trash bin?

You shouldn't put files you may want to keep in the Trash.  It's not a storage location.  Make a separate folder on the Desktop.  I used to have one that I named Waste Basket (I even gave it a special icon).  I put files there when I wasn't 100% sure about deleting it, but I wanted to get it out of the way.
But to answer your question, there is no way selectively delete what is in the Trash.  You'd have to drag the items you want to keep out of the Trash, empty the Trash, and drag them back into the Trash.

    Folder in trash:
    jojojo > 1 > 1;2;3;4
All folders have no files in them. I literally tried everything but can't get rid of these 6 empty folders. There seem to be invisible ePub files in these folders. Here's a screen shot. I'm sure I followed the steps correctly.

    Please help!

none of these methods work. I tried:
rash utilities for eradicating troublesome files
You may want to download and install the freeware utility Trash It! or the shareware utility Cocktail. Using one of these utilities is often the fastest way to Trash recalcitrant files.
Note: Be sure to employ a version of the utility that is compatible with the version of Mac OS X you are using.
Force the Trash to empty using the Option key
This technique uses a hidden feature of Mac OS X to force the Trash to empty. Perform the following steps in the order specified:
Press and hold the mouse button on the Trash icon in the Dock. The context menu for Trash will display.
Press and hold the Option key or the Shift-Option keyboard combination,
Select Empty Trash from the context menu for Trash.
Release the keys pressed and held in step 2.
Empty and recreate an account's Trash
The following procedure will "kill two birds with one stone." It will both:
Empty the Trash of an affected account.
Create a new ~/.Trash directory, with correct ownership and permissions, for that account.
Perform the following steps in the order specified:
    1.
If the affected account is protected by FileVault, log in to the affected account, then switch to and log in to your Admin account via Fast User Switching. Otherwise, log in to your Admin account.
    2.
Open Terminal, located in the Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities folder.
    3.
At the Terminal prompt, type one of the following commands:
    If the affected account is:
    Then type the Terminal command:
    Your Admin account:
    sudo rm -ri ~/.Trash
    Another user account:
sudo rm -ri /Users/user_name/.Trash where user_name is the short name of the affected account.
    Note that:
There is a single space after each of the terms sudo, rm, and -ri in the command.
Assure you have typed the command exactly as specified before proceeding: typographical errors in this command can have dire consequences, including erasing your hard drive!
    4.
    Press Return.
    5.
Type your Admin password when prompted, then press Return.
    6.
Type y for yes in response to the subsequent prompts to delete each file in the trash and finally the affected .Trash folder itself.  The prompts are finished when the Terminal prompt returns.
    7.
If the affected account is your Admin account, log out. If the affected account was another user account that is logged in via Fast User Switching, log out of that account.
    8.
Log in to the affected account. It will now have a new, working, and empty Trash.
Steps 1-6 remove all files in the affected account's Trash as well as deleting the hidden and invisible ~/.Trash directory for that account. The remaining steps result in recreating the affected account's Trash, with proper ownership and permissions.
none of these steps worked. i also tried both utilities. trash it! doesnt work and says i have to wait and nothing happens and cocktail says it removed everything but these folders are still there! i really dont know what to do, looks like i will have to reinstall everything to get rid of the folders. it's unbelievable. any ideas? the methods REALLY dont work, im not some oncompetent guy.

    All,
I thought it may be related to spaces in the path in which the script was called from. I tried having the ODBC command script in another directory but the same thing happens. It will give me the "CONFIGSYSDSN: Unable to create a data source for the 'Oracle in OraClient10g_home1' driver: Could not load the setup or translator library with error code -2147467259". As soon as the script is done running I can manually double click the script and it adds the DSN fine.

    Hi Eidda,
This may because the attachment is a winmail.dat file. I would recommend taking a look at the article below for more information. Note: the article is written for OS X mail, but does also apply to this situation.

  • Limit users to execute "SELECT" statemes only from SQL Developer

    Hi:
Is there a way to control what SQL command can be executed from SQL Developer?
I am trying to limit users to execute "SELECT" statements only from SQL Developer.
I believe SQL*Plus used to have the product profile where I can control what SQL command can be executed from what user.
    Thanks in advance.

There's nothing special in sqldev to enforce privileges, the database does all that already. See the database documentation on the GRANT and REVOKE statements. Basically, you would only want to grant SELECT privileges to your users...

On the left above in the menu bar you see the first icon is a little apple.
If you clcik it, there is  a menu. Click "About this Mac" it will show the OS, processor and memory.
(Everything about your mac, you will see when you click "More Info" in that panel).
I suppose that the "file" (icon) is a link to Sky TV:
Quit Safari by clicking "quit" in the Safari menu ( ! ), then drag the icon in the Trash bin again. Empty the Trash (rightclik on it); when it will not empty the Trash bin, rightclick the Trash bin while holding the CMD key and "secure empty the trash".

  • Cannot delete icon services cache from trash.

Hi everyone, I have a 15" macbook 2014 running yosemite. I was having trouble with a download that was stuck on pause so I thought I would empty the cache for the mac store. I trashed a file named com.apple.iconservices.store. That was fine I rebooted and OS X recreated cache as normal. After that I am not able to delete folder from trash because it says the files inside the folder are in use. the files have names like this 1AEDA0FE-C8DB-52F8-3A88-57A134262EB1.isdata. I have managed to unlock the folder by changing the permission settings and I removed a file and changed its name thinking it wouldn't recognize the file. I still get an in use prompt even with a bogus name. Any suggestions? should I just ignore this file in the trash? seems like if it is going to be a problem I should just revert back to an older time machine since it has only been a week at this point. thanks.

    Hi Jaron,
Thanks for participating in the Apple Support Communities.
If you have cache or data files in the Trash that cannot be deleted, try the methods in this article such as holding Option when emptying the Trash:
You can't empty the Trash or move a file to the Trash - Apple Support
If the Trash still can't be emptied after trying the methods in this article, try Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks on your Mac's startup disk.

  • How to delete time machine backups from trash bin

    Hello,
I've got a little issue with time machine and doing something stupid on my part. I have seen different posts on this question, but it appears that most people haven't found a working solution, so I want to see if anybody has more insight.
A few weeks back I found that there were some files and folders that were getting backed up to time machine that I didn't want getting backed up for various reasons. Rather than wisely removing the individual folder and files like I've since learned, I removed the whole backup for that date to the trash bin. I know, bad choice.
I've tried to empty trash bin and delete the backups altogether, but error codes and permissions keep me from doing that. Space isn't an issue on the external drive I use for Time Machine, so I'd be fine with just getting the files OUT of trash and back into the folder with other backup dates-now that I know how to delete individual files. When I try and drag them back to TM folder from trash, get another error message saying something along the lines of the "drive not being able to be modified".
I've heard of some people using Terminal to remove files, while other folks say that that's dangerous and asking for bigger problems in the OS. So, what are my BEST options? Just want to get locked files out of the trash bin, don't care where they go at this point. I've tried the secure trash delete option and some other simple suggestions with no luck. Backups still sitting in trash.

    Hi DonnaR,
What's not good is to remove them via the Finder or any way other than within Time Machine
Unfortunately this is what I did, and I know better now, but I can't undo what foolish thing I did. I have tried the steps to a T that you included in earlier post from this page- http://pondini.org/TM/E6.html using the Terminal method. The files are still sitting in trash, no change. I have also done the "secure trash" thing holding down option key and that hasn't worked either. I have also done repeated REPAIR DISK operations of the external drive within Disk Utility and a freeware program called Maintenance, and unless there' some special reboot needed, I still see the files there. At this point, and after reading more on pondini.org, I'd rather figure out a way to "Put Back" deleted backups sitting in trash bin to their place in Time Machine folder via finder, if I could figure out a permissions way around the error message I get saying "The operation can’t be completed because backup items can’t be modified." Is there some way of tricking the Finder window into letting me copy back items somehow? Once I get them back in, I will go through and delete the files from INSIDE Time Machine Star Wars view like suggested.    Force deleting items from trash using TrashIt or OnyX is my very last resort. Once I get this figured out, I intend to upgrade to Mavericks, but I want to do it with everything working and clean.   Thanks again!

  • Can I recover a file erased from Trash?

Good day to all the experts. I have mistakenly deleted a large file (about 20Gb) that manages my photo library in iPhoto, and on top to that also erased it from Trash. Perhaps it was called smt like Library*.iPhoto.
I still have all my row images in various folders but I see nothing when I enter iPhoto. About 2000 pics missing. Photos of my travels since 2005! Is there a way to recover a deleted file? Do I have to purchase a data-recovery software? Or are there any reliable freebies? I will be much obliged for your guidance...

Many thanks to Sig and Lymnos. I have tried the Data rescue software suggested by Sig, but I can't get it to work because it needs a separate drive to write on which i don't have - it does not accept a writable CD for that purpose. What i don't understand is the following. I found out that all my pictures are still accessible through the Pictures folder in the Finder (as Originals). But I do not see them anymore in iPhoto. I don't understand what the very large (20Giga) file that i deleted was.

  • Enhancement Request to delete selected photo/video from mobile app / LVR2

Hi, I have enhancement request for action Cam: HDR-AS100VR. Please give ability to delete photo/video from either the PlayMemories mobile app OR the RM-LVR2 device. As the only option is to format the microSD card. It is a hassle to connect to computer to delete specific photo/video from the action cam. With the current functionality to copy/share (from mobile app) as well as playback from RM-LVR2 ; I believe Select and Delete function is not a difficult things to do If Sony doesn't have time to do this, perhaps Sony can make API available for public? Thanks

I have a new IPOD Nano and have sync'd several songs from ITUNES. I now want to delete a few songs. I have read and reread the instructions but cannot get an edit button when I go to the songs list and flick down. The edit button only appears on the screen that shows the playlists. I only want to delete selected songs. Can anyone help? Thanks.

    Hello ram801,
You may find it easier to put the iPod Nano into 'manual mode' and mange music via iTunes.

  • Can I delete song file directly from iTunes?

Currently if I want to delete any songs from my HDD I have to:
    ○ Right click th song in iTunes .
    ○ Click "Show in Windows Eplorer".
    ○ Delete the file.
    ○ Delete song in iTunes library.
◙ And repeat it all if there are more than one song I need to delete.
Is there any way to delete files from iTunes directly?

    Stuwawah wrote:
You can but in order to be able to do it directly from iTunes, the song/songs need to be store in the "iTunes folder" in your media directory or the Default folder to chose Under:
** Preferences -> Advanced -> Itunes Media folder location
    That is not accurate.
I do not keep my media in the iTunes folder because I personally cannot stand the way iTunes manages the folders.
I am able to delete media from my computer via iTunes by simply selecting delete and then selecting the option to let iTunes remove it from the drive.

  • I can't delete a file in the trash that has strange symbols (␀ ␀獭潤) in its filename.

There is a file in the Trash with a filename containing strange symbols, along with some Chinese characters. For some reason when I empty the Trash, all files are deleted as expected, expect this one particular file. The symbols are: ␀ ␀獭潤 — although some of the symbols I was unable to copy, which is probably why they are causing problems.
How can I get rid of these files? Even in Terminal it says that the file does not exist.

I'd like to point out that in my problem, the problematic file is actually on a USB drive, not on the Mac's internal drive. The USB is formatted FAT32.
Anyway, I ended up reformatting the disk since it's an external drive so it wasn't much hassle. It's essentially like nuking the whole thing, which is a bit overkill, but I couldn't figure out how to fix this since the two apps recommended by the link you provided (Trash It and Cocktail) both failed to delete the file.
