HT1529 If you lost your ipod before you could get the serial number then what do you do ?
I also need to know how to get a new one i have a two year plan on it and its for stolen or broken ipods do you have to have a serial number to have them contact it ?

It would be on the box it came in. It would also be on your support profile is you ever signed up for one (here: https://supportprofile.apple.com). Finally, if you ever synced it with iTunes on your computer you can find it by doing the following:
Launch iTunes on your computer.
Hold down your Control key, then on the menu bar in iTunes click iTunes>About iTunes (Mac) or Help>About iTunes (PC).
Any previously synced devices will scroll in a pop-up window; press the space bar to stop scrolling so you can write down the serial number. -
I need to get the serial number but need to know if there is a place in Itunes to get it without the device or the intital paperwork I recieved when I got it.
Maybe. Run an iTunes device connectivity test. Near the end of the report there should be a field indicating the last iPod that was synced with that particular iTunes library. It will include the serial # of the device. So if you have already synced another device since then, I'm afraid you are out of luck.

On the syncing computer go to iTunes>Preferences>Device and hover the mouse pointer over the iPod backup and the SN will show in a box. Also see:
