HT1535 using my iPad to move photos from one computer to another

Recently I visited my sister, who had a bunch of photos on her computer, and I wanted to bring them back with me to my computer.  The online advice seemed to indicate using iTunes to transfer the photos to my iPad.  This proved to be confusing, difficult and inflexible.  I wasted a lot of time "transfering" one folder after another, only to discover when I was done that each folder I synced obliterated the copy of the previous one, leaving my iPad with only the last folder I "transfered".  So, I transfered the folder containing all the sub-folders, and that worked (at least in the sense that I can see all the photos on my iPad).
Now at home, I'm attempting to transfer the photos to my computer (Mac - OSX 10.8.5) and I cannot figure out how to do it at all.  When I attach my iPad to my computer via the USB cable, iTunes shows me photos to import from my iPad, but does not include among them the ones from my sister's computer.  When it first detects my iPad there is an extremely brief flash on the screen that looks like it could be the full set of photos.  So I guess iTunes is actually filtering out my sister's photos.  My guess is it's designed to do this for music content, for which what I'm doing would most likely be theft.
Does Apple provide a way for me to move these photos to my computer?  Am I alone in thinking that Apple has really bungled the iOS file system (if one can even call it such)?  I'm sure they're trying very hard to prevent the iPad from disrupting their place in the laptop market, but I think they will lose both markets if they don't put a more standard file system on the iPad soon.

lizdance40, thanks for confirming my suspicions.
Do I understand your suggestion correctly, that I must get an account with a third party, upload the photos (possibly over a slow/expensive broadband service), and then download them (again, possibly over a slow/expensive broadband service) to my computer?
If I'd had a $20 USB drive with me, I could have just copied them to the drive at her house, and copied them from the drive at my house.  No hassles, no laws broken, no bandwidth limitations, no hours spent searching for answers, no third party software/services.  My $400 iPad can't emulate a $20 USB drive?
Having been suckered by the bad advice on Apple's own "help" pages, are you saying that I may as well just delete the photos on my iPad because I'm not going to get them onto my computer?
And no one here finds this disappointing?

  • Can I move photos from one computer to another using Vault?

Can I move photos from one computer to another using Vault?  I use an external hard drive as a vault for my Imac and I want to import photos to my Macbook pro.  I have aperture 3 on both units.  Can I just plug the ext. drive into the laptop and import from the vault?

You can't import from the vault but you can restore that vault onto the MBP. This will restore the complete library that is contained in the vault.

I want to move all the music I have on my old laptop (macbook) to my new macbook pro. How can I do this? Easy, simple, steps would be greatly appreciated!

Are you moving the itunes library?? That is entirely different to moving just music.
Apple have specific instructions for moving libraries..
And there is no need to use the TC.. other than as a switch and router.. share the folder in one Mac to copy to.

Using iPhoto, I want to move photo from one event to another I export it to desktop and then reimport.  Titles and other info vanish; only the original jpg number comes thru.  How do I avoid this?

Don't do that - flag the photo and go to the target event and use the add flagged photo to selected event command to move it intact within iPhoto

  • Move photos from one roll to another?

    Hi,
I have iphoto 6 and was wondering if I can move photos from one roll to another existing roll? When I moved photos from an external drive, photos that should have been lumped together ended up in different rolls so I'm trying to sort everything out. Is that possible?
    Thanks!

Yes you can as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Using the View -> Film Rolls command, you'll see the Rolls in the iPhoto Window, and you can drag a pic to the Title of the target roll.

  • Move Photos from one Catalogue to another

Is it possible to move Photos from one Catalogue to another one?

    Not directly.
You could delete a photo from one catalog, and import it into another catalog.

  • Copying photos from one computer to another, with descriptions

After editing photo descriptions and locations in iPhoto, it is desireable to be able to copy them to iPhoto on another computer, with the associated photo descriptions and locations.  In principle, this is possible by selecting all desired photos, then selecting File -> Export...  In the Export dialog box, in the "File Export" tab, select "Include: Titles and keywords", and "Include: Location information".  Copy the exported files to the other computer, and do a File -> Import to Library ...
In practice, this works fine with images taken by some cameras, and not with images from others.  In my limited experience with a Fuji F80EXR and a Canon SX230HS, the above work flow works with the Fuji.  But, with the Canon, while the exported files clearly have the description data embedded in them (as seen by GraphicConverter), it is not imported into iPhoto, nor is it visible in Preview's Inspector.  The workaround I use is to run an exiftool command on the exported files.
Exiftool is a command line utility that can read and write meta data in image files:
    http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/
I run the following command on the exported files to rewrite the IPTC Caption:
exiftool −overwrite_original_in_place -tagsfromfile %f.jpg -ext jpg -"IPTC:Caption-Abstract>IPTC:Caption-Abstract" *.jpg
Note that the above command overwrites the files that were exported from iPhoto.  If you wish to leave the original files intact, with an "_original" appended to the file name, run:
exiftool -tagsfromfile %f.jpg -ext jpg -"IPTC:Caption-Abstract>IPTC:Caption-Abstract" *.jpg
I'm not sure why it is necessary to copy and rewrite that data.  Perhaps there is something strange in the format of the meta data in the file as it comes from the camera, and the iPhoto export does not correct this strangeness. Copying and rewriting the data by exiftool seems to put things right.
The above works for me, but is somewhat unwieldy.  Is there a better way to copy photos from one computer to another, if iPhoto refuses to import the description data that it was written to the exported files?

Thanks for the pointer.  I did a test with 10 images, and confirmed the iPLM works, even with the problematic images from my Canon SX230HS.
The workflow is to use iPLM to create a new Library on the computer that has the photos you want to copy.  Copy the photos to the new Library.  Copy the new Library to the second computer using a method of your choice (file sharing, USB flash drive, etc).  Copy the photos from the new Library to the existing iPhoto Library.
iPLM costs $20, whereas my original solution was free (but you need to invest the time to get exiftool installed and working).  But, unlike exiftools, iPLM also copies over the Faces information, so it is likely a worthwhile investment if you use that feature.

  • HT1657 how do you move a movie rental from one computer to another computer

I rented a movie from iTunes and downloaded it to my Macbook Air.
I now want to watch it on my iMac, but it tells me its authorized to play on another computer.
FAQ says I need to move it from one computer to another.
    How do I do this?

You may be able to move it by syncing it to an iPod or iOS device capable of playing it and then using the Transfer Purchases function; it won't play on the destination computer if moved in the normal way.
If it can't be moved that way, no.
If the MacBook Air isn't usable, ask the iTunes Store staff for assistance.

  • I want to move ebooks from one computer to another.

I want to move ebooks from one computer to another.  Both have Digital Editions installed.  Older one 2.0 ver has books installed.  Newer one has ver 3.0 no books installed.  Both are authorized with the same user id.  Do I have to upload from older machine to cloud first?  How do I do that?  Do I have to manually transfer files?  How do I do that?  Can I get pointed to online directions someplace?

Figured it out.  Copy files to new computer and add to library from digital additions.  duh.  Why was it some much easier to figure out answer once I posted the question?

  • Moving Movie Rentals from one computer to another

Is there a way to transfer an iTunes movie rental from one computer to another. I purchased it on one laptop but wish to play the movie on another laptop. It does not show up in the list on the other computer even though it is a shared laptop

Sorry, but transferring a rental from one computer to another is not possible, at least not directly. It might be possible by transferring the rental to an iPod/iPhone and then transferring back to the second computer, though I don't know for sure.

  • How do I move photos from one library to another?

I have moved my 34gig iphoto library from my MBP to an external drive. I have now created a second library on the MBP with the intention of keeping just a smaller selection of my photos in this ready to edit.
Is there an easy way of importing photos from the old library on the external drive to the new one? Do they link up in any way, or, will I need to export a selection from the old library to a new folder on the desktop and then import from there?

To move all the versions, metadata and photos from one Library to another use iPhoto Library Manager.
Exporting from one and then importing to another will not get all the metadata (Faces, for instance) nor will it get the versions.
Another way to achieve what you seem to want to do:
    1. Quit iPhoto.
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the external drive.
Now you have two full copies of the Library. To choose between them: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
    3. On the Internal Library, remove the pics you don't want with you all the time.
Now you have one full library on the external and another smaller sub-set on the Internal.
    A couple of comments:
    a. The external disk needs to be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
b: When you're removing the unwanted pics from the Internal Library you need to delete them in batches of about 100 or so. Trashing more at one time can cause problems with the database.

  • IPHOTO 11 does not allow me to move photos from one event to another.

I recently upgraded to IPHOTO 11 and now I cannot Cut/Paste photos from one EVENT to another, I cannot flag a photo and  move the photo to another EVENT.  It will only allow me to create a new Event from the the flagged photo's.  IS there a bug in IPHOTO11 and can I back out if this problem is not resolved?

Make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
delete  the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
    Select options #1, #2 and #6.
    Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • How to move photos from one library to another?

    Hi,
I currently have 2 libraries and I want to move photos from one library into the other.
How do I have to proceed?
    Thx
    A

We're thinking of adding a library copy feature soon.  Hoping you can share some info here to help us understand how this might best work fo you.   Here's a few questions I have:
    - What do you use the 2 libraries for?
      - Why do you want to copy?
      - Do you have albums, favorites, and comments associated with the photos?  Do you want them copied?
Anything else that you are hoping to accomplish here?
    Thanks in advance,
    Peter
