HT1544 I have misplaced my OSX 10.5 installation disks...
I have misplaced my OSX 10.5 installation disks, can I download to my MacBook Air a version of the startup discs and save it from there to an external thumb drive for installation on an old iBook G4? Where would I find such files if this process is available?
I need to wipe the drive on the iBook G4 and reinstall the OS on a clean drive.
Thanks for your suggestions.
Don't wipe anything until you are sure you can replace the OS.
It is common to clone an OS to an external disk and then replace it or put it on another compatible computer.
Carbon Copy Cloner does this easily with default settings - check their disk preparation (format) page first.
Here is my standard upgrade information in case you need it:
Before the install
Ensure your data (at least all Home folders) is backed up before you install. Hard disks can fail at any time so it is important to regularly backup to an external disk with Time Machine or a third party alternative. Inexperienced users should follow Apple's install advice but experienced users may prefer to do a clean install.
OS numbers and names
OS X 10.4.x - Tiger
OS X 10.5.x - Leopard
OS X 10.6.x - Snow Leopard
OS X 10.7.x - Lion
OS X 10.8.x - Mountain Lion

Upgrade to Leopard
Those wishing to upgrade to Leopard should be aware that install disks can be expensive. Details: http://lowendmac.com/deals/best-os-x-leopard-prices.html Standard Leopard installers impose several hardware limitations including speed and RAM size but all these restrictions can be overcome. Google for details. Leopard works well at 500 MHz with 1 GB of RAM and many happy users have less than this.
Upgrade beyond Leopard
OSs beyond OS X 10.5.8 require an Intel processor. If in doubt click the apple at the top left of your screen and select 'About this Mac'. This will give you your OS number. Then click 'More Info' to see which processor you have. If it says PowerPC you cannot upgrade to Snow Leopard and above. If you have an Intel Mac it is well worth upgrading to Snow Leopard now and then considering other options after that. You can buy Snow Leopard here: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A
Upgrade to Lion
Information about upgrading Snow Leopard to Lion: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD256Z/A
Upgrade to Mountain Lion
Information about upgrading Snow Leopard or Lion to Mountain Lion: http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
Important
Check that your Mac complies with any requirements.
If you are not in the US you should use the Change Country link at the bottom of Apple pages.

At least its now reversed as to what it used to be originally before. the 128gb ssd used to be on top. Is my mac booting fusion correctly? Thank you for responding as I was about to reformat.

I have a MacBook OSX 10.5.8 and a Time Capsule 500GB since July 2008. My problem is (for the 4th time in 4 yrs) the backup gets stuck in "preparing" indefinitely (hours). In the past, wile still under apple care warranty, tech support had me redo backup (loosing previous backups). Now I'm out of warranty and still having this problem. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I cannot update from Safari 5.1 to 6. or 7. I have a Mac OSX 10.6.8
It isn't possible on that OS. You need to upgrade the computer's OS or use a different web browser.

We have an iMac OSX Lion. I received a CD with photos on it from a friend of mine. My friend scanned the photos to her computer and gave the disc to me. I can hear the disc spinning but the pictures aren't coming up to view. Before having the iMac I had a Dell computer. I was able to view the photos at that time. Is there something I can do so I can view them on my iMac? Thank you.
The information I see in disk utility is the following: MacIntosh HD superdrive. 1TBST31000528A S Media

I have a Mac OSX 10.6.8 and I can no longer "save to iPhoto " when I get photos on email.
What changed, before you could no longer save image attachments to iPhoto?
Did you install new software or upgrade to newer versions? Which version of iPhoto are you using?
The "Save to iPhoto" feature has been missing for some iPhoto versions. I do not remember exactly when it vanished, but it is back with iPhoto 9,6 and MacOS X 10.10.2.
As a work-around - you can drag photo attacuments from your mail to the iPhoto icon in the Dock to save them to iPhoto. -

thanks,
i guess i will go tomorrow to an apple store and ask for the ios disk only!
I hope they still got it on sale!
As far as I know, Apple Stores do not sell machine specific system discs.
Replacement System Discs can be obtained from Apple's Customer Support for a nominal fee. You'll need to have the model and serial number of your Mac available.
Since you are not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html -
I am new to Macs and have bought a 13" Macbook Pro and a IMac 21.5" 14 months ago. I have only used the Macbook pro about 15-20 times and after upgrading to Maverick it will not boot up. I get the white screen and a spinning circle. I have tried Disk utility repair and even re-installing the OSX, but it says disk locked. I do not recall setting any password protections or passwords. I now have a brick with a lit up Apple logo. If anyone knows how I can bypass the disk lock error or reset the laptop, please let me know. This has not been a pleasant conversion from PC's. Even my IMac blacks out from time to time and both happened right after my factory warranty expired.
The internal drive is malfunctioning. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

My 2010 Macbook Pro crashes all the time.
It either freezes to a complete restart (giving me the grey screen, but still starting up again after a press of a button) or it hangs and goes back to the login screen. Some things to note: The macbook has 8gb ram instead of the 4gb it came with. It
