I have both an iPhone 5 and Ipad mini which both use iCloud and which I find great as my photos are shared between the both. I also have a Mac Book so thought I'd take the plunge and set it up on there too. However, it doesn't appear in the System Preferences. I have a MacBook Pro running Max OS X 10.6.8 and from viewing some documents on the Apple Website it says to go into System Preferences, and set up iCloud from under the Internet & Wireless section. The trouble is, I only have an option for MobileMe (which I am assuming has now been replaced by iCloud?). Can anyone tell me how I get 'MobileMe' updated, or get iCloud on my Mac please? If you mean your username and password for your user account on your Mac, this has nothing to do with MobileMe or iCloud. If you had a paid for MobileMe account you would have a username in the form [email protected] or @mac.com and you could use this to open an iCloud on Lion or above. Otherwise you would have to create or use your Apple ID, again on Lion or above.

iCloud only comes with OSX 10.7.2 or later, you need to upgrade your OS. Go to the Mac App Store and try downloading OSX Mavericks. The store will only let you download it if your computer meets the required specifications.
If you are told your Mac is not compatible with Mavericks, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) or better CPU with at least 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.

To run icloud on your mac you'll need to upgrade to at least Lion, but preferably Mountain Lion. You can purchase and download Mountain Lion in the App Store. If your system will not run Mountain Lion, but will run Lion, you'll have to call AppleCare to order a redemption code for it, to be used in the App Store.
Before upgrading, be sure your currently important software will run on the newer OS. Always do a backup before upgrading.

I'm afraid you can't get the full iCloud functions: Lion 10.7.2 is required for iCloud. You cannot set up a new iCloud account on Snow Leopard. However as you are running iOS5 on your iPhone or iPad you can use that to set up a new account. Go to http://appleid.apple.com and create a new Apple ID. Then follow the instructions here:

Thank you Roger, your solution gave me the courage to sign out of Systems Preferences. The pop up told me it was going to delete my contact and other information from my mac, so I was hesitant to do that. Well I did as you directed and I was able to sign in with my new apple id and I did not lose the information the pop up threatened I was going to. So again thank you. It is the little things that make a big difference sometimes.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! It sounds like you did a good job editing your Apple ID and primary email address, but you didn’t sign out of iCloud on your iOS device before hand. What you may need to do in this situation is go back to the Apple ID website and edit your Apple ID and primary email address back to the email address that is signed in with iCloud (there is no need to verify the account after editing it back to the old account, just changing it back is enough). Once your Apple ID is back to the original account, delete the iCloud account from the iOS device and be sure to keep all info on the device when prompted. After you delete the iCloud account, go back to the website and edit your Apple ID and primary email address back to the new address. Once it is back to the account you would like, you can sign into the iCloud on the iOS device with that new account and merge all of the data when prompted. Please use the following article as a reference.

in Mountain Lion you can save text edit files to the icloud. How do I get iCloud to appear in the sidebar in Finder. On icloud only iwork is displayed for files. I usedropbox and it looks just like any other folder in Finder. Does iCloud behave the same?

Thanks. It began to dawn on me that this was the case as I try to poke around for ways to do this. I will continue to use Dropbox which works fantastically. Just wonder why Apple would come up with such a limited option.
