HT1567 What if there are no optical drives detected?

After installing the latest itunes update, my CD/DVD drive is no longer recognized.

Hey Michael
I had the same problem.  I tried unistalling / installing itunes several times and still nothing worked.  I figured out once I change the drive letter in Disk Management to anything other than A or B then Itunes was able to see the CD drive.

  • Combo / Optical Drive detected but not reading CD & DVD

    Hi everyone,
Firstly, I apologize if this topic has been covered but I've searched up and down and couldn't find it.
    I'm running the following computer:
    G4 MDD Dual 1.42Ghz, 1Gb RAM, OS 10.4
My computer has been dormant for about a month now and last night I fired it up with the following problem: _Grey screen with spinning 'loading' icon and it wouldn't get into the desktop_
I managed to successfully boot to the desktop after I did a combination of the following:
    1. Reboot in Safe Mode (Shift)
    2. Reset NVRAM (Opt + Cmd + O + F)
    3. Reset PRAM (Opt + Cmd + P + R)
    4. Removed all 3rd party cables
I haven't used the Combo/Optical Drive for about a month now and I decided that maybe I should re-install Tiger. When I inserted the Installer CD, the Combo Drive (1st slot) just ignored it. Initially, Superdrive (2nd slot) also ignores all discs I inserted. After countless restarts, I managed to get the Superdrive to read the G4 Hardware Test CD.
    I've done the following:
    1. Finder preference is set to not ignore inserted media
    2. Tinkered with the Optical drive by unplugging and plugging it back
    3. Everything else I could find on the internet regarding troubleshooting it
    4. Made sure that the cables are connected properly inside the computer
    5. Ran the Apple Hardware Test CD and everything is OK.
    6. Checked with the System Profiler and it detects both Optical Drives (1st slot = Combo Drive, 2nd slot = Superdrive).
    Now the problem is:
    1. Combo Drive does not read any inserted disc (CD & DVD)
    2. Superdrive reads but spits them out soon after
    3. I can't re-install Tiger
Any advice / suggestions is very much appreciated.

    Hi David,
My computer has been dormant for about a month
Have you checked the PRAM Battery, they can cause strange things & last 4+5 years...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/BAA36VPRAM/
Combo Drive does not read any inserted disc (CD & DVD)
Opticals do go out, but 2 at once doesn't seem likely. What happens if you open Disk Utility then insert a Disc?
Have you tried a Cleaner CD in them?

  • What size SSD? Swapping Optical Drive for gen. storage.

I'm planning on buying a smaller SSD and was looking for suggestions on the best size to buy. I have a 13" Late 2011 Macbook Pro, i5. 8gb RAM. 500gb HDD.
What I'm doing is replacing my 500gb HDD and moving that to my optical bay just for general storage. I'm going to set up my new SSD as the boot drive. I want to boost my performance for as little money as possible. I know that I can put 16gb RAM in and get significant improvement, but really want to get rid of the HDD as the boot drive. I'm leaning toward getting either the 44gb or 60gb Mercury Electra 6G SSD.
Any suggestions on what size would be best for what I want or any other suggestions are welcome.

I suggest that you get at least a 240 GB SSD. SATA3, of course!
Larger SSDs are generally much faster, and the price is now dropping (to the point that I have just purchased an 1Tb Crucial M500 SSD for less than 400 €). The price difference between a 64 GB SSD and a 240 GB SSD is now minimal, and you will enjoy more space!
Two years ago, as soon as I purchased my late-2011 MBP, I immediately did the same, moving the original 750Gb HD to the optical bay, and installing a 240Gb Vertex-2 SSD in the main bay as system disk.
The space was just enough, as I have Bootcamp and Windows 7, too, so I divided it half-and-half, and a 128Gb storage is just barely enough for either OSX and Wndows-7 64 bits Pro...
You could survive with a 128 GB SSD if you do not need Bootcamp. Indeed, I always recommend to install Bootcamp and Windows 7 to all Mac owners, so you get the best of the two worlds. I love OSX, but for certain tasks Windows is still vastly superior (using Autocad, for example)...
Curiously, instead, I prefer OSX for Office...

  • What is the correct replacement optical drive for MBP late 2007?

    Hello all,
I am finally getting around to replacing my failed SuperDrive, a Panasonic UJ-857E.
Reputable online resellers say the Panasonic UJ-867A will work.  I bought one.  It will not work, because the ribbon cable connector is a different shape than the connector on the original drive.
Local Apple store tried to order a ribbon cable that would work, but determined there is no such cable:  there is just no way to connect the UJ-867A to this MBP.
They kindly offered to get me a drive that will work from Apple, but $180 seems a little steep to me.  I asked them for the model / part number of this new drive, but they have so far declined.
Does anyone know with certainty what drive I should be looking for?  The MBP is late 2007, model # A1226.
    Thanks.

  • What is the best external Optical Drive for my Macbook?

I was wondering if anyone has purchased an external CD/DVD burner for their Macbook?
My internal Super Drive in my Macbook will only play DVDs not CDs. And my discs always get stuck.
I am looking for an external drive that will read and write CDs and DVDs. Something that I can boot my Macbook from if there is a need.
    Thank you

If your MacBook is still under warranty, contact Apple. There's no reason to accept a partially operating Mac. If it isn't under warranty you might still want to contact Apple and relate your problem - you never know, you could get lucky.
Essentially any FW or USB external drive is going to work - head over to NewEgg and search for external DVD burners. The great thing about NewEgg, besides being a pretty decent company to deal with, is the user reviews. They are blunt, honest, and pretty useful. You might also want to check out http://xlr8yourmac.com/ for user information. It is the go to place for upgrades.

  • Navigator-view limitations: what if there are too many buttons to show?

I have a page that is really bad design, but I use it to fire up various dialog-paths into my application. For that I've got for every dialog-path a button that is only there to get me to the first page of a series of one business process.
This is where the Navigator-view came in very handy, it allowed me to easily (re-)configure the links on my test-index.html. From every button I would drag a 'line' to the next page.
But after putting 14 or so buttons on this page, I noticed that in the Navigator-view, only 13 buttons are displayed, the 14th and next buttons don't fit on the enlarged (purplish) page, so the navigation from those buttons can't be created using this really handy view on my application.
I might be overseeing something, but there seems to be no way to scroll down to see the buttons that 'fell off' the page.
    Iwan

Unfortunately the nav editor doesn't handle this well. One thing you can try is to switch the layout to draggable layout since I think the pages are slightly larger in that layout mode (see the nav editor context menu).
Another option is to use a combo box to do navigation; make the combo box contain the page case names, have it auto submit, and on submit, have the event handler do something like this:
    getContext().getApplication().getNavigationHandler().handleNavigation(getContext(), null, "" + dropdown1.getValue());
(The select items for the combobox can obviously have different values than display names so your combo can display user friendly page names that are separate from the navigation case names).

  • So, I'm new to Itunes and seem to be unable to download my selected tunes. What am I doing or not doing.  I seem to be following instructions, what little there are.

So,I'm new to itunes and seem to be unable to download tunes to my computer.  The instructions make it so simple to sign on, but, not to download.

Call Apple Care. They will either help you over the phone, or they will help you send it in for repair (it takes only a few days to do that - you usually have it back literally two or three days after you send it in)...What you are describing is something malfunctioning and that is NOT usual for a mac.

  • I downloaded Firefox 4., now what? There are no tabs that say install...how does one install it?

For folks that are not highly technologically savvy, I suggest you add more instruction on the upload to 4.0 HP. I downloaded the file as suggested and then nothing prompted me to do more.

Me too! I put 4.0 into the Application folder (I thought) then put the icon on my bar but when I double clicked on it, version 3.6.1 came up. I had deleted the original icon from my bar before dragging the 'new' icon from the Apps folder. Do I need to delete 3.6.1 from Apps first?
    thanks for any help!

  • Dv9820us Optical Drive Missing

This is a little lengthy so please bear with me. I want to get all the facts out there so you know what I've done so far and what I'm dealing with.
I bought a dv9820us for parts but found it actually booted into the installed Vista OS. However, it did not show an optical drive installed even though a BlueRay/DVD was installed. Light on the optical drive lit as the laptop was booting. It did not appear in the Device Manager. I pulled it and reinserted with power on, no change. I tried another optical drive, no change. I suspected the optical was turned off in the BIOS.
Upon rebooting I noticed the BIOS was the factory original and about 6 upgrades behind. I also noticed there was no option to actually turn the optical off in BIOS. When I rebooted, I selected F9 boot order and the only option is 2. Internal Hard Drive. So I proceeded to boot into Vista and went to the support files and ran the BIOS upgrade to the latest F.34. I turned around as it started and turned back a couple of minutes later to see the laptop powered off. It shouldn't power off but reboot upon successful BIOS flash. I rebooted and the laptop BIOS was bricked and stuck in a boot loop.
I built a crisis recovery floppy loaded with the latest BIOS and booted to it. I was able to reflash the BIOS and get the laptop back up and running Vista. I wanted to upgrade the laptop to Windows 7. Again, there was no optical drive detected. So I connected an external DVD and ran an upgrade from there. It almost finished but sat in Completing Upgrade for over an hour. This is not right so I powered the laptop off and back on to force it to finish the setup. It now fails the Windows 7 load saying insert disk and restart.
Again, there is no optical drive detected. I'm stuck once again.
CAN I force a boot from an external DVD? I want to start the Windows 7 load from scratch. If I pull the hard drive and reformat it from another computer, will it THEN find the installed optical drive? I'm stumped due to the fact that no optical is detected by the BIOS.
Any help or suggestions is GREATLY appreciated!!!!
    Dave

....oh, and also tried the FixIt process to repair the upper and lower limit registry values. No help there either.
Problem I see is before Windows even kicks in, the optical is missing in the BIOS.
I took the hard drive out and put it into another HP laptop and did a format and am loading Windows 7. My thoughts are to get the install done on the hard drive, reinstall it in the dv9820, boot in safe mode and allow it to load the drivers for THIS laptop from an external DVD.
If this doesn't help, next step is to disassemble the laptop and look for anything out of place. Not sure but holding out hopes that disconnecting everything and reconnecting MIGHT help. And by disassembling may discover the reason for this, like possible spill damage. Hope not...

  • Installing #2 optical drive in G4

First, I must be losing my mind. I can't find the search window for searching the archives on the beloved site. All I see is (Search) top right, but when I enter a word, I do NOT get the usual screen for reading past posts.
That said: I have just installed a 2nd CD-Rom (from older G3) into the second bay of my G4. At first, both doors opened, then only the bottom, then only the top. What are the magic words for making this work? How much do the jumpers have to do with these drives, or do I removed all he jumpers? No idea how one selects one drive over the other.
A little MORE help from my friends, please.
    Patt

I found the answer on http://forums.macrumors.com. When there are two optical drives available, a small "eject" symbol shows up on the top of the desktop menu, in the area of the "date and time". F12 ejects top CD and Alt F12 ejects the second cd.
Guess I get the points for this answer. But, still can't figure out what happened to the search window and the subscribe to topic option.

  • Installing applications without optical drive.

I just replaced my old Mac Mini (old one is dead) with a new one.  The new one does not have an optical drive.  I have several applications on CD/DVD disks I would like to install.
    Two questions.
    1) Short of purchasing an external optical drive is there a good method of installing these apps?
    2) Any suggestions on an external DVD drive? I have read that the Mac Mini cannot supply the power (via the PCI bus) needed for apples external super drive.

First off which App's, many older ones are no longer compatible with Lion?
See > App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps
Second, you will need either a USB or FireWire 800 External DVD Drive.
I have Mac compatible LG GE24LU20 USB Optical Drive and it works great with my iMac and Mac Mini.

There are other USB Optical Drives on the market, but you need to look closely at the spec's to be sure that they are OS X compatible.
Then there are FireWire Optical Drives from OWC and Lacie, but you needs to besure that they are FireWire 800 so that you do not end up having to spring for a FireWire 400 to 800 adapter or cable.

  • IMac G5 education without optical drive, what can I do?

I've just bought on ebay an iMac G5 1,6 Ghz (without isight) with the motherboard dead. It is very easy to open.
What was my surprise to see that there was no optical drive...In fact, it could receive one : the slot is there, the IDE cable too, the sloat-loading hole too, but...it is impossible to introduce any CD or DVD because there is a plastic and metallic band all around that makes it impossible....
As I didn't understand, I made a research on the web anf found out the answer....Incerdible! I didn't know that Apple had made an iMac G5 model for education, without optical drive : from outside, impossible to distinguish it, but when you try to introduce a CD or DVD in the slot, you can't!
So the only solution is to buy an external firewire drive?
I tried to see if it was possible to put out the metallic band to free the access for one CD, but it seems impossible! The metallic piece is riveted, or something like that....
    Does anyone has tried something?
Thanks, I apologize if my english is not very good

I've just bought on ebay an iMac G5 1,6 Ghz (without isight) with the motherboard dead.
I assume you managed to fix that "motherboard dead" problem, since there would be no point in installing an optical drive in a Mac that does not work.
If you can't get the slot open because it is intentionally closed, maybe you can get an external optical drive and stick something else into that internal space. For example, will it fit a 2.5-inch (laptop size) IDE hard drive for additional internal storage? Or you can get an IDE-to-compact-flash adapter card and give your iMac a solid state flash drive (like MacBook Air); CF cards are getting pretty cheap, even at the 16GB size, and you can get even larger ones for a higher price. Maybe you can even boot from it.
    Just some ideas...

  • Tried to replace RAM but now computer not starting...PowerMac G5 dual 2.0 - are my hard drives safe? What's up?

Hello - I tried to increase the RAM in my old and trusted Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0...2005)  tonight and now I'm in trouble. It has only 4 slots for RAM.  It came installed with 2X256 and 2X512 ram cards.  I bought 2X 1GB of Ram from Crucial.com after sending them the specs of my computer they assured me it was the right RAM.  I installed the RAM just how the youtube tutorials instructed....  I replaced the 2 256 cards with the new 1GB cards and closed up the computer......note:  I also "dusted" the inside of the mac very carefully and lightly with a barely damp rag.....
I plugged her in and the power button light immediately went on but the computer did not.  The button wouldn't respond to being held down either.   No sign of a startup or a fan noise. Nothing on the screen, no signal.... Nothing.....  So I tried reversing the order of the RAM, I installed the 1GB along with the 512's.  Nothing again, just the light turns on when I plug her in.  Then I returned the RAM to the original configuration.....again NOTHING...just the light on.
I reset the SMU.  (little button underneath the RAM area)  I haven't tried to reset the PRAM yet, but I'm pretty sure that will not work either as she is not starting up at all....just the light is on...  I didn't get a noticeable shock or static spark during the entire operation either. ****....whats up?
Are my Hard Drives safe in there?
Any ideas out there?  Thanks in advance to your advice, T

Ouch!  That was not the way to get dust out.  Running that damp rag anywhere near an electronic component, even if you were wearing a properly grounded writs strap, was way dangerous.
Did you lay the machine on its left side when you replaced the RAM?  That is much safer (though the recommendation only shows up in the service documentation, not the user guide, for some reason).
What I would do at this point is to remove all RAM and try to power the machine.  If other stuff is OK, you won't start but you will see the lunar LED flashing in a repetitive pattern above the power switch.  If you don't see that happening, then things are exceptionally serious.
