HT1589 Viewing the new iTunes library?

I would like to have the option of viewing my entire library of music with my playlists on the left.  Is this not possible anymore with the new itunes?
Frustrated... why do they change something that works?!

  • HT1589 Create a New Itunes Library

When I choose to create a new library (by holdin down the option key when opening the program) am I creating only an index, or will Itunes automatically start copying the music files themselves to my Mac hardrive? My music file are large, my mac hard drive small. I keep the files on an external hard drive.
    Thanks,
    Charles

When you create a new empty library iTunes shouldn't automatically import any content, although if you are signed into an iTunes account it may display links to stream or download your purchases from iTunes in the cloud. Check your options under iTunes (Edit on a PC) > Preferences > Advanced for Keep... & Copy... and the media folder to make sure they are what you want.

  • How do i put the song from the hard drive back in the new itunes library?

I had a laptop with music in the itunes library. I put the music from there in a hard drive. I bought a new laptop. How do i put the songs  from the hard drive back into the itunes library on my new laptop.

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • Transferring iphone music to the new itunes library

I recently had to re-boot my computer, without saving any of my music onto a hardrive, however the music remains on my iphone. Does anyone know a way to get the music from my iphone to the newly installed itunes library? Thankyou

Lol ok first of all im completely hopeless at computers!
Basically my computer had a massive virus on it, so my brother (without telling me) did something to remove the virus, but with it, it deleted all of the data of the computer. So i had to download Itunes again. So you see no music had been saved on a different hardrive and the only music I do have is all on my iphone.
Thanks so much for responding so quickly!

  • HT1386 I have a new computer and when I tried to sync my iPod Touch with the new iTunes, it has lost all of my music and videos from my iPod/old iTunes library: including all but 4 songs of my bought songs, videos and audeobooks!

I have recently updated my computer since my old one broke and therefore had to download a new iTunes. When I came to add my iPod to this new iTunes, I was given no option to transfer the contents of my iPod library to this new iTunes and was forced to try 'sync'; when my old computer was repaired once we lost all of our data so I had to download a new iTunes then, all of my iPod downloads were transferred and I could easily reburn my CDs so I didn't think the wiping of my iPod would be a problem. When I clicked 'sync' it warned me that it would replace the contents of my iPod with the new iTunes library, as I said I didn't think this would be a problembut then it asked if it should transfer my recent iTunes downloads so I said 'yes'. The sync was completed but now I only have 4 downloaded songs and 5 albums which I burned to my new iTunes! I have lost all the music I bought, all the videos I bought and all the audiobooks I bought! (Luckily I still have my apps.) I tried to restore backup but realised that only covers calendars, contacts E.T.C and I checked my iTunes account and that shows all my downloads but I can't see a way to restore them or anything like that!
Please help! I am in despair as you can imagine how much moneys worth I have lost and am losing faith in Apple

Correct. When you update via iTunes all synced media that is not in your iTunes library will be lost.
    As IO said before:
You can redownload most iTunes pruchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
I do not think it included audio books.

  • I just changed the OS from Vista to Windows7.  I have a folder on the same computer with the old iTunes library.  I installed a new version of iTunes from scratch.  How do I move my music library, etc from that backed up folder into the new iTunes folder.

I need help with moving my music library.
I recently upgraded the OS on my computer from Vista to Windows7.
During the process it copied my iTunes library to a folder on this same computer (marked it Windows.old)
Once the OS was done, I installed a new copy of iTunes on the Windows7 but it now has a blank library (folder)
How do I move my music from its current folder location (on this same computer) into the new iTunes library folder ???
There don't seem to be specific instructions on how to do this.

    Skydiver119 wrote:
My situation may be different from yours since all mu music is ripped from cd's not bought from iTunes, but I would think the premise is the same.
Doesn't matter what is in your library.
When I moved computers I literally dragged and dropped the music where I wanted it to be. THen when I opened iTunes I imported the files back into iTUnes
This creates a new library with all the same items but you lose a lot of info: Ratings, comments, date added, custom EQ, playlists, etc.
If you simply copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder, it is the exact same library, not a new library. No info is lost.

  • HT1329 How can I get the songs on my iPod onto my new iTunes library?

Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • HT1535 I want to delete all of the music on my iPhone and reload from a new iTunes library on a new computer

I acquired a new PC .  I had my iPone synched to the iTunes library on the old PC.  I now want to delete all of the music off of my iPhone and reload it with the new iTunes library that I am creating on the new PC.
I tried seveal times using different synch options ...  all unsuccessful.

    Hey finterra,
Thanks for the question. With iOS 7 you can now delete your entire music library from your device. Simply navigate to Settings > General > Usage > Music then tap Edit, tap the minus symbol, then tap Delete.

  • New itunes library set up.

I hate the new itunes library set up. Any way of going back to the previous set up?

If you had the entire library running from the external drive it should be a matter of holding down option as you start iTunes and browsing to the library on the external drive.
If you'd followed the advice to move the media folder only then ideally you need to recover the library folder from your Macbook with a view to making the library portable on the external drive.
Otherwise you're going to have to simply import the content into a new library, losing rating, playlists, play counts. etc.
If you have any devices that sync to your library see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • Please help - how do I import music from my ipod into a new itunes library?

    Hello
I would very much appreciate it if someone could tell me how to get the music from my old ipod mini into the new itunes library on my new laptop.
The mini was previously sync'd with my old PC which died so my files are only present on the ipod. Upon loading itunes, the software is only letting my sync the ipod providing I wipe it (obviously not desirable...)
    Thanks for any support, Andy

Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" as you already know will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iRepo Mac and Windows
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Syncing to new iTunes library without losing app folder organization?

I reinstalled the OS on my PC and after installing iTunes and pointing it at the iTunes folder on my second drive, it nevertheless lost my iTunes library. I was able to re-add all my content by adding the My Music folder to iTunes, but I lost my playlists. I was okay with recreating those, but...
When I chose to sync apps, iTunes said it would replace the apps on the phone with the ones from the libray. And all my folder organization work will be lost.
Is there any way to associate my iPhone 4 with the "new" library but maintain the folder organization I have?

A manual backup will help. Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your phone and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. This will save all settings, data, photos and much more to your computer. More info here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
After that, transfer our purchases the same way, choosing transfer purchases this time. All apps and purchased media fro the Store will be copied to the new iTunes library.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your PC to be able to merge calendars and contacts after the first sync, which will wipe your phone. But you can restore from the manual backup you made before.
