HT1631 Mail asks for password every 10 minutes

I suspect this is nearly the answer to my problem with Mail and Chrome in *10.6.8*, tho I have not recently changed my login p/w.
On my iMac with this configuration Mail will ask for my p/w every 10 mins or so, Chrome intermittently, and has done for months and is driving me mad! My MBP is fine.
Cheers, Colin

Hi, thanks for that, just found it in my Trash, which is a first for Apple Discussions with me.
Anyway I did a verify rather than repair and got:
Verification started
Checking keychain configuration for CC (user ID=XXX)
Home directory is /Users/XXX
Checked login keychain
Permissions incorrect on ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain, should be -rw-r--r-- , they are -rwxrwxrwx
Checked default keychain
Checked keychain search list
Checked contents of ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
Checked contents of ~/Library/Keychains/1Passwd.keychain
Checked contents of ~/Library/Keychains/1Password.keychain

Problems were found; you should choose the Repair option to fix them
Verification failed
From the first bit in bold it looks as if you are correct, but it also says 'Problems were found …', so does it just give up listing after the first?
I think there only two Keychains I use, login and presumably System. The latter exists in Library/Keychains [which says it has not been modified for 10 months which also surprises me] and the former in ~/Library/Keychains last modified yesterday.
I assume I should copy them before messing?
Cheers, Colin

    Can someone help me?

    Hello,
1st, Either the passwoed is not being stored in your keychain, or the wrong one is stored there...
Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Keychain Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over.
2nd, Might be the same problem as the 1st, or some change at hotmail, same problem with hotmail here, but I don't use that account much at all.

No. There's nothing wrong with Mail, so changing it by upgrading to Lion will not solve the problem you're experiencing.
If you're being asked for your password every time Mail checks for new mail, then there are two possible solutions. Let's try the first one:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. Open Keychain Access, go to the Keychain Access Menu and choose Keychain First Aid. Chhose repair, type in your password and click on Start. When it's done, quit Keychain Access.
    3. Restart Mail and see if the problem is still there.
If it is, then try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. Open Keychain Access, select Passwords and scroll through the list until you find the password entry for that email account; delete it, and quit Keychain Access.
    3. Restart Mail, and when it asks for your password, enter it and check the box to store it in your Keychain.
With any luck, that will definitely solve your problem.

  • Ask for password every minute !!

I had this problem in the past but since i connected the iphone , mail ask for password every minute..
i tried to repair permissions, repair keychains as explained in other topics but nothing to do with it !
Maybe it as to do with yahoo mail or compatibility with iphone ?
    Thank you for help

I also have no permission to restore the keychain , it's the last thing i can do..
    any idea ?

  • It asks for password each 3 minutes

Icloud asks for password each 3 minutes(Ipad). What should i do to improve it?

it's necessary to provide Windows this administrative password.
Windows tries to ensure this way that its ''you'' who really want to install Software and not a virus.

  • OS X Mail. Asks for password every time...

Mail app, asks for an account password everytime I relaunch it, restart or reconnect to the internet. Only asks the password for whatever account is the bottom one in preferences. If i go to preferences and check the account info the password field is just blank, I reenter and no luck, it cleans it again if I disconnect, restart or relaunch the app. I had to go as far as to register a new mail acc and place it at the bottom in preferences and just cancel every time the password prompt pops up. Its really annoing.

Launch Keychain Access, Keychain First Aid, and repair your login.keychain, repair permissions, restart, and see if that fixes things.

  • My Ipad2 is turning off all Icloud settings and asking for password every minute

    Hi,
My Ipad2 is turning off all my icloud settings by itself and asking for the password every minute. After about an hour it works again but only for a few days and starts turning off the settings again.
This started about 3 weeks ago an even when it starts working again for a few days there are still some photos and contacts missing. But on my IPhone and on icloud.com everything is fine.
Has anyone an idea what is happening?

    Hi,
Thanks for the tip. I deleted the Account and at least everything is back on my ipad. But it was asking for the password a few times since then.
But if it stops turning off all my settings i could live with putting in the password every hour...
I will see if it stops deleting and turning off.

  • Instead of "Mailbox busy", Mail asks for password, long delay

We're testing Mail as a replacement for Eudora at my place of work. There is a POP account (not .mac) that is checked by five people. Using Eudora 6.x, if one person was checking the account, anybody else trying to check would get a Mailbox Busy message. Using Mail, you'd get an alert symbol next to the mailbox in the mailbox list, but next time mail was checked and the mailbox wasn't busy, it would work fine.
We just switched to a new mail server yesterday (on a Vereo host?) and now, though Eudora is behaving as before if the account is busy, Mail will pop up a box saying the password wasn't recognized, asking for the correct password, and then there's a loooong delay while it times out.
I presume the new server is sending some kind of busy message that Mail interprets incorrectly, but it's a show-stopper for us. Currently our options are:
    1. Stop using a shared mailbox (my personal preference, but the actual users might not go for it)
    2. Find out from the provider why the new server is causing this behavior (fat chance--they're likely to blame it on our weird Apple software)
    3. Find out how to make Mail interpret the busy signal correctly.
    4. Forward the account's mail to all the users' own addresses, instead of having them check that account themselves (am doing this now, will see how it works out. It will require more storage space on the server, at a minimum.)
I'm trying to find out if the server supports IMAP but in any case that would not be a workable solution for us.
Any feedback or enlightenment would be greatly appreciated.

"More Like this" entry " Phantom Mail Account won't let go! Steven Shmerler SASNET Design, New York  Oct 10, 2011 7:56 PM" gave me a clue, which after 15 minutes without annoying message, seems to work.
Went to Mail Preferences/ Accounts/ Account Information/ Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)/ Edit SMTP Server List...
There were four (count them, 4) references to Earthlink. I deleted them, restarted Mail, and so far so good.

  • Mail asks for password until exchange account is locked

I have a customer who uses Exchange, latest version.
They have 40 users still on 10.6.8, no problems with Mail or iCal.
When upgrading the computers to 10.9.3 we always get problems with mail.
It seems the Mail account is lost in the upgrade process. Sometimes even the local mail folders are lost and sometimes not.
On all of the upgraded computers the Mail account information is lost.
After setting the account up again, Mail always crashes first time.
Second launch causes the Setup guide to start again requiring the setup of the Mail account a second time.
Now the mail server won't accept the supplied password. It keeps asking until it is locked on the Active Directory. Unlocking and typing it two times or more may solve it, maybe another round of unlocking the account again.
If have seen this on 10 computers now.

    Hi Ernie,
Normally my MacBook is off when I am on the road but I was not sure this time as I was testing the account settings on my new iPad.
So I switched off my Mac, started up my work PC and did send an email from my work account.
Then I did read the email from the iPad.
To make sure not to have issues with normal server delays I waited 15 minutes (would be normal also if I read my mail with iPhone/iPad on the road) to restart my Mac and open Mail:
It connected and downloaded the message without any questions for password.
So your suggestion may be right and in that case it is no issue to me.
I will set your answer to Helpful and keep the post open for some time to see if this really is solving my issue.
    Thanks,
    Menno

  • Sending mail asks for password

I'm trying to send mail and no matter which email I use (I have multiple mac mail and my website mail linked to my mac mail) I get the pop up asking for my password I punch it in and it pops up again, it won't accept the password. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Are you sure that your outgoing mail server (SMTP) requires a passwort? Because if you try to authenticate with a password and the server does not "want" a password, this can result in errors.
    Go to:
Mail --> Preferences --> Accounts ---> At the left side chose your account --> At the right side at the bottom chose Server Settings --> Switch "Identification" to "None"
    Perhaps this works.
I have 5 mail accounts, only one really requires authentication on sending mail. The others don't. I had the same problems at the beginning.

  • IPad popup Wifi panel asks for password every time...

I have an iPad 2. Seems to be an issue with iOS 5.  I have a dev account but don't recall encountering this issue in previous betas.
I use tethering a lot, but i have to restart the tether often because it doesn't stay discoverable. If i restart the hotspot on my phone and im not in the settings app on the iPad, i get the standard popup "Select a wifi network" box.  If i select my tether, or even wifi router in this popup panel, it demands i put in my password or it won't connect.  If i cancel that and go to the Settings app, I can click network, see the same access point, and select it without having to re-enter my password. If i disconnect and retry the event, the popup box comes up, and once again, demands i put in the password i've entered in this box around 30 times already.  If i cancel it and go back to settings, it connects without having to put a password in.
Frustrating bug. Is there anyone else having this issue? I mean, i know i can always go back into settings to get it to recoonect, but should I have to when that panel is there for a reason?  I've tried resetting my network settings, restoring my iPad, all sorts of stuff but it still seems to occur.   Any assistance or even verification of this bug would be cool.
    Thanks,
    - BJ

Look under settings and restrictions and see how the password is set to appear. I think the default is that you only have to log in every 15 minutes, but it can also be set to require it every time.

  • ModemManager asks for password every time.

Suddenly every time after startup and login ModemManager ask for my user password, and I'm first on the web when I have type it in..
Anyone know why, and how to avoid it/do it automatically.?
    Screenshot: http://db.tt/MqkFsjY4

Even though I had a very similar Problem, I had it with ModemManager in connection with NetworkManager on Debian. I found this thread (as so often you find good answers in the arch forums that help for many other distributions ) but the Problem presented differently (and much much more recent - this weekend in fact)
The Pin Dialog would pop up every restart of NetworkManager, saving or applying the Pin would be rejected with an error that the system policy forbids "org.freedesktop.ModemManager1.Device.Control" and nothing else than aborting ended the dialog. Controlling WLAN was not possible anymore either.
I then found out that though NetworkManager could not find a systemd-session for the current user (by stracing NetworkManager - not very accurate). I guess there was a problem running logind properly from X or something like that, since the system was running SysV-Init with logind. Switching to systemd as a startup manager helped but I didn't find out what broke in the first place.
I hope this helps people finding this thread somehow.

  • Keychain Asks for Password Every Time I Log In

I just got a new MacBook Pro. Every time I log into my account, the keychain asks for my password. My old Mac didn't do this, and I cannot figure out how to have it remember me/not ask every time.

There should be a check mark on that window from keychain that says remember password.

  • Wireless asks for password every time on Lion

First time Mac user with Brand new Macbook Air with Lion.
First thing I do after taking it out of the box is to connect it to my work wireless.  It is checked off to remember the password.  Everytime I close the lid and open it ask for they password again...
There are no updates available.  None of the suggestions from googling and the apple forums help.
Have deleted everything including all remebered networks, keychain passwords, certificates and recreated new locations and it still asks for a password every time.  Started from scratch countless times with still no luck.  Half a dozen Mac cetrans and IT experts have looked at this in person and are stumped.  So much for "it just works".  It just doesn't work!  Very Annoying

Suggest that you try a post over in the Lion support area.
We primarily handle questions about the AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule in this support area.
