Have you tried resetting the Apple Mobile Device Service in the article below? That would be one of the steps in the second article to get your iPhone to show up in iTunes.

Does your phone have enough available memory for the movie? Maybe you will need to clear some space.

How to cancel movie rental download

Hi, here's my problem, hopefully you all can help me out. In the past two months I've rented 3 movies on my iphone4. With each one I get "Download error, tap to retry"....Well it's been two months and I have no desire to watch these films anymore, I just want to cancel them on my phone so that they don't show up in my download file anymore. I have no other issues downloading apps, music or tv shows so I'm not sure what the problem is. I just want them gone!

If you rent it on your iPhone then it will download onto your phone, films from iTunes aren't streamed.
For rentals you have 30 days to watch it, but once you start watching it (even if you only watch one second) you then have 24 hours if you are in the US, 48 hours elsewhere, to finish watching it before it expires.

If I rent a movie from itunes to my computer do I need to be connected to the internet when I watch it? I will be on Amtrak which has very sporadic internet availability.

As long as it has been fully downloaded then you should be able to watch whilst offline

I rented a movie and when I pressed play it would not play. When it finally started to play it would freeze and looked very digital.

I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the item that is not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the item, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item.
