HT1657 Do I have to have Internet service to play an iTunes movie rental?

Going on vacation and want rent some movies.  If I rent from iTunes, do I have to be connected to Internet to play the movies? Or do they store and play from my iPad?

I had exactly the same issue. I had rented and succesfully downloaded several movies to watch on an airplane and they would not open on my Ipad - none of them. How frustrating ! The message was simply " cannot open" without any additional explanations. During my connection, I went on internet opened the Itunes stores and suddenly I could open and watch my movies. This is a shame. We should be able to watch rented movies without internet, as stated by apple.  Anyone had similar experiences and has an explanation ?

Please download iTunes from Apple.com and then sync your ipad. After which your ipad will appear on the right hand side upper corner of iTunes.Select your ipad and click check for update, once update has been found click update and follow the steps after that.

If your iPod touch is already running iOS 5 then you should be able to upgrade to iOS 5.0.1 on the device with a Wi-Fi connection.

  • Does anyone have problems with iTunes movie rentals freezing in the middle of the movie?

Does anyone have problems with iTunes movie rentals freezing in the middle of the movie, requiring a force quit, which causes your rental to disappear? This has happened multiple times to me recently. Last time Apple didn't refund my money after reporting the problem. I have been using iTunes for many years but am about to give up.

Correction: I was refunded for the previous movie freeze.

  • Why can't my emails get sent on iPad they used to without problem. And not don't. I have Internet service but no email service, what happened?

HHave Internet service but no email service on my ipad.  Why?  I always have to plug in my computer to send emails. It is a big problem I am getting worn out dealing with. Help?

    Hey there Criseal,
It sounds like you are unable to get your email on your iPad suddenly. I'd recommend these troubleshooting steps from the article found here, named:
    iOS: Troubleshooting Mail
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3899
Log in to your email provider's website to make sure that the account is active and the password is correct.
Make sure your settings are correct using Mail Settings Lookup.
    Restart your iOS device.
Delete the affected email account from your device.
Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
    Tap the affected email account.
    Tap Delete Account.
    Add your account again.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,

Nobody has come up with a definitive answer.  It seems you have to start watching a rented movie with an Internet connection so it can start the 24 hour timer, but after that you can continue to watch it.

  • Hi, is it possible to download apps using itunes because we dont have wifi connection, we only have internet service connected to PC. thanks

hi, is it possible to download apps using itunes because we dont have wifi connection, we only have an internet service connected to the PC.

There are some steps on this page for syncing a device (the page talks about iPhones, but it would work for iPads as well) to a new computer : Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive.
When you connect an iPad to a computer's iTunes for the first time it might give you two options, to replace what is currently on the iPad with what is in that computer's iTunes library, or to set it up as a new device (i.e. remove all content from it) - hopefully the above page will get around that.
You should be able to use different computers to update the iOS version and to sync content (can you not use the same computer ?), but you will probably have to do the above for both.
If you don't currently have anything on the iPad that you don't mind losing (have you downloaded apps or other content when you've had access to wifi e.g. in shops, other people's homes ; or got any documents etc on it) then you don't need to go through the steps on that page.

  • HT1657 Do i have to have internet connection to watch a downloaded movie?  Ex. download and than watch in my car?

Do i have to have a internet connection to watch a downloaded movie?

    according to apple...
An Internet connection to the iTunes Store is required to authorize playback of movie rentals??

  • Apple TV is useless unless I have internet service?

Is this true? I can;t even use it without internet?
    This is beat.

The only reason you'd need the internet, aside from downloading upgrades from Apple (which is recommended), is so you can download things directly to your ATV from the www instead of xfrg them from your computer. You'll also have to use wires (yuck) to hook up your 'pooter to your ATV since you don't have a wireless connection. So, that kinds of *****, yeah, but if you don't use the net for anything....why don't you have internet? That's kind of odd you're asking this since you'd have to be online to ask this question, unless you're using the internet at work...you sneaky bugger, you!
Anywhoo...good luck and I hope you enjoy your ATV - please let us know how it is sans www since I think you're the only one here that doesn't have it.

  • Why don't I have internet service for laptop and desktop at the same time

Time capsule will either provide Internet service to my iMac (hardwired) or my laptop (wireless), but not simultaneously.

Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
    Click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address
    Click Update to save settings
Wait a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart, then check the network again.

  • HT1657 Do I have the option to buy a rented  movie?

Do I have the option to buy a rented movie? In other words can I preview it by renting it first, then purchase it at the original purchase price minus the rental fee?

No, if you decide to buy it (assuming that it's available to buy in your country) then you will pay the full purchase price, there isn't a discount for having rented it

  • HT1657 Do I need internet to watch a rented iTunes movie?

How does the movie rental work? If I rent a movie can I watch it on my iPad with no internet connection (like on a plane)

Please be aware of the movie rental's time limitation that you have 30 days from the time of rental to watch your movie, and once you start watching it, you have 24 hours to finish watching it. You may watch it as many times as you like during those 24 hours. It may be helpful to make sure the download completes successfully before you begin watching the movie.
Once the download is complete you can watch it without an Internet connection. However, an Internet connection to the iTunes Store is required to authorize playback or activate the 24 hours time-limit of movie rentals. This means, only during the starting of the movie. Once you have started playing the movie rental, internet connection is not required. You can play anywhere without internet connection.
For more information on movie rentals, you can visit:
iTunes Store: Movie rental frequently asked questions (FAQ)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1657
Note: 24 hours time limit is for United States customer only, while 48 hours for other countries.

  • HT1657 Using a VGA adaptor with iPad 1 for iTunes movie rentals?

I have an iPad 1 with a VGA adaptor to display supported apps on external displays like YouTube and GoodReader. I tried to use this with a rented SD movie from iTunes and I got a warning along the lines of  "output device not supported for protected material." Is there a way to do play iTunes rentals on an external display from the iPad? This is simple on a MacBook.
    Thanks,
    RSR

    Welcome to the Support Communities!

iTunes Store: Movie rental frequently asked questions (FAQ)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1657?viewlocale=en_US
Can I play my rental on more than one device?
If you download a rented movie on your computer: You can transfer it to a device such as your Apple TV (1st generation), iPhone, iPad, or iPod if it’s a standard-definition film (movies in HD can only be watched on your computer, iPad, iPhone 4 or later, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV). Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only exist on one device at a time.
If you download a rented movie on your iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV: It is not transferable to any other device or computer.
    Cheers,

  • HT204370 Trying to play my recently downloaded iTunes movie rentals. When opening I get the window "Cannot Open".  Others previously worked fine, internet connection is good, and payments went thru fine.  Please advise. Thx!

iTunes movies won't play.  (Previously others worked fine.)  When I open the movies i get the window "Cannot Open".  Internet connection is fine, payment went thru fine.  Please advise...thx!

    Thankyou for the two replies.
I have some good news but I still am concerned about why this happened?
Using iTunes, I deleted then re-synced the video files that wouldn't play and now all of them play again.
As I don't know why this problem occured, I am concerned about it happening again...it is NOT fun to have to delete and reload all of these vids, but, at least I know that there is some kind of "workaround"!
If anyone has an idea of WHY this happened and, perhaps how to prevent it in the future, I would appreciate that input despite the fact that all my vids now play again.
