Once I download a rented movie, do I need WiFi access in order to watch it?

Welcome to the Apple Community.
From my own personal experience, I have found that when I turn off the Wi-Fi on my Wi-Fi only iPad, I am still able to play rented movies on it. I have tried this perhaps four or five times and in each case, this has been the result. I have also noted that other users have had the same experience as I.
However saying that I have noted a small number of users that have stated they are unable to view rented movies without an Internet connection. This knowledge base article from Apple, also suggests that an Internet connection is required.

Once I download a rented movie on iTunes doi need Internet connection to watch it.

Please be aware of the movie rental's time limitation that you have 30 days from the time of rental to watch your movie, and once you start watching it, you have 24 hours to finish watching it. You may watch it as many times as you like during those 24 hours. It may be helpful to make sure the download completes successfully before you begin watching the movie.
Once the download is complete you can watch it without an Internet connection. However, an Internet connection to the iTunes Store is required to authorize playback or activate the 24 hours time-limit of movie rentals. This means, only during the starting of the movie. Once you have started playing the movie rental, internet connection is not required. You can play anywhere without internet connection.

Note: 24 hours time limit is for United States customer only, while 48 hours for other countries.

  • HT1657 I downloaded a rented movie through my iMac and now I want to watch it on my apple tv, why isn't it working?

    Help

    Hello FeedUpUser,
Thank you for the question.  When you purchase a rental, you can view it on one device at a time:
Can I play my rental on more than one device?
If you download a rented movie on your computer: You can transfer it to a device such as your Apple TV (1st generation), iPhone, iPad, or iPod if it’s a standard-definition film (movies in HD can only be watched on your computer, iPad, iPhone 4 or later, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV). Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only exist on one device at a time.
If you download a rented movie on your iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV: It is not transferable to any other device or computer.

If you are using a first generation Apple TV, you can transfer your movie to the Apple TV using the steps in the section titled "Transfer a rental from your iTunes library to iPod, iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV" in the following articles:

If you have a second or third generation Apple TV, you can use AirPlay to play the rental through your Apple TV.  You can find the steps in the following article:

  • HT1657 After renting a movie do you need WIFI to watch the movie?

After renting a movie do you need WIFI to watch the movie?

No, you do not need Internet to watch it. when you rent it, it downloads the movie or show and then you have a limited amount of time to watch it and then after 48 hours of starting it, it will remove itself. You can watch it without internet once you have downloaded it.

  • HT4095 I downloaded a rented movie in hd to my ipad2 but can't find it to pay through my apple tv now. How do I watch the movie?

I downloaded a rented movie in hd to my ipad2 but can't find it to pay through my apple tv now. How do I watch the movie?

Rented movies downloaded to an iOS device cannot be transferred to any other computer or iOS device. Are you sure that a rented movie, downloaded to an iPad, can be airstreamed to an Apple TV?

  • Why will it take 26  hours to download a rented movie?

Why will it take 26+ hours to download a rented movie?

For watching a movie only the download speed matters, and 4 mbps is OK, not great but good enough to start streaming a movie in about 10 minutes or less (rentals don't have to download all the way to begin watching).
Something else is clogging the pipe ... is the ATV connected to the router via Ethernet, or over Wi-Fi?  Wi-Fi is normally faster than your ISP service, but there might be router settings that are getting in the way of the Wi-Fi connection.  Ethernet may be faster, at least to see if it works better, or there might be port settings on your router that need to be optimized (sorry, can't help you there).
I've also heard that changing your router's DNS address may help things (try OpenDNS's addresses "208.67.222.220" or "208.67.222.222", or Google's DNS "8.8.4.4" or "8.8.8.8").

    Hey rangermikegsm,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you’re concerned because you don’t see your rentals in iTunes, but they appear to have downloaded. Take a look at the article below and check the Rentals tab in iTunes on your MacBook.
About renting movies from the iTunes Store - Apple Support
    Find movies you rented previously
Find your movie on the device you used to rent it.
On a Mac or PC: Go to the Rentals tab in the Movies section of the iTunes Library.
On an iOS device: Go to the Rental tab of the Videos app.
Using Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation): Look in the top shelf of the main menu.
    Ciao,
    -Jason

Are you doing it thru the Settings panel or are you downloading independently thru the App Store?
Settings / Facebook / Install on iOS 6.1.3 Will need to sign in your valid FB account.

  • HT1430 How do I delete a movie or can I move it so I can download a RENTED movie?  I appreciate all of everyone's help

How do delete a movie download or move it somewhere so I can download a RENTED movie?

Thank you for the reply roaming gnome.
Unfortunately, I already have "hidden" these purchases in the past. Despite "hiding" them, they still attempt to download to my computer automatically.
Please note, I DID NOT PURCHASE this movie. A friend purchased it for me as a gift through iTunes.
Again, thank you for the link to the Apple Support page, but that does not resolve my issue.
Please see the attached screenshot for what I see when I go to Purchases > Movies. Nothing shows up - presumably because I already "hid" them in the past.
Selecting "Not in My Library" under "Movies" has the same display. The movie I want to delete does not show up under "Music" "TV Shows" "Apps" or "Books," as well.
