HT1657 Watching a rented movie on my iPad.

Must I have a wifi or data connection to watch a rented movie? I am wanting to rent a few movies to watch while flying and I am new to this service.

As long as the film has been fully downloaded then you should be able to watch it whilst offline

Did you look for the movie in the Videos App? Movies do not play in iTunes on the iPad - they play in the Videos App.

  • HT1498 I have rented several movies from iTunes on my iPad, just bought apple tv, can I watch the rented movies from my iPad on the tv ?

I have an iPad and have rent several movies from iTunes, I have just bought apple tv, why can't I watch my rented movies on the tv, my home share is activated ? Have I just wasted £99 ?

    Hi,
Yes, start the movie on your iPad and tap on the AirPlay icon and chose AppleTV from the list.
You can't "transfert" your rental to your AppleTV but you can stream it using AirPlay.

  • Is internet connection needed to watch iTunes rented movies on iPhone/iPad?

I am looking into renting some movies from iTunes to watch on a plane on my iPad. I know I need and internet connection to download the rental and it is then store in iTunes but do i need internet connection to start watching the movie? I read somewhere that to begin the 24/48 hour viewing period iTunes needs to connect to the internet to acknowledge that the time has started. Is this the case or is it possible to just start watching the downloaded rentals through iTunes while on a plane with no access to the internet?

I suspect the answer is no as rented movies can be watched on normal iPods with no connectivity. You'll need an active connection during the transfer of the rented movie from iTunes to the device. At the end of the transfer the device will hold the only copy and it can then enforce the playback time limit without needing to "phone home".

  • HT3209 Can I watch a rented movie on an Ipad if I am not hooked up to wi-fi at the time I watch it but previously downloaded it to my ipad?

Can I watch an Itunes rental movie on an Ipad if I am not hooked up to wi fi
at the time I watch it.  (but previously downloaded it to the ipad.)?

You should be able to watch a rental while you are not connected to WiFi. However, the movie has to be fully downloaded to the iPad and must be stored on the iPad in order to watch it.

I am getting on a flight on Saturday and want to be able to download movies to rent before I leave but want to make sure after I download them at home that I don't have to be connected to wifi to watch them.

No, once downloaded you can play it whenever you like.

  • HT204291 how do I watch a rented movie from my iPad 3 on the apple tv

    plz answer

You can't.  When you rent a movie, it can be played only on the device where you obtained it.  If you want the flexibility to change your mind, the original download must go to your computer's iTunes.

  • HT1657 do u need a internet connection to watch a rented movie?

Do i need a internet connection to watch a rented movie on my ipad?

Please be aware of the movie rental's time limitation that you have 30 days from the time of rental to watch your movie, and once you start watching it, you have 24 hours to finish watching it. You may watch it as many times as you like during those 24 hours. It may be helpful to make sure the download completes successfully before you begin watching the movie.
Once the download is complete you can watch it without an Internet connection. However, an Internet connection to the iTunes Store is required to authorize playback or activate the 24 hours time-limit of movie rentals. This means, only during the starting of the movie. Once you have started playing the movie rental, internet connection is not required. You can play anywhere without internet connection.
For more information on movie rentals, you can visit:

Note: 24 hours time limit is for United States customer only, while 48 hours for other countries.

  • HT1657 Do I have to have wifi or Internet connection to watch a rented movie

Do I have to have an Internet connection to watch a rented movie on my iPad or I pod

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
From my own personal experience, I have found that when I turn off the Wi-Fi on my Wi-Fi only iPad, I am still able to play rented movies on it. I have tried this perhaps four or five times and in each case, this has been the result. I have also noted that other users have had the same experience as I.
However saying that I have noted a small number of users that have stated they are unable to view rented movies without an Internet connection. This knowledge base article from Apple, also suggests that an Internet connection is required.

  • Can I watch rented movies on my ipad on an airplane?

About to take a very long flight and want to watch some rented movies on my ipad - I just read somewhere online that I can't do this without a wifi connection on the airplane - is this true? How can I do this? Thank you.

Thanks for your responses - maybe I didn't put the question exactly right. I know that I need to be connected to download, but I've heard that you need an internet connection to watch the downloaded films so that Apple can start the clock on the rental. I've read a lot of stuff online that suggests that to watch rentals on an airplane you've got to start the film on the ground where you've got a connection and start the clock. This seems like a crazy work around for what must be a pretty popular activity for an ipad.
I've looked at the Apple FAQ and haven't found any clear answers to this question. Can anyone clarify this one? Thanks again.

can i watch rented movies on my ipad with no wifi? Like on a plane trip?

Yes. although you do occasionally hear about people having problems.  If your trip is less than 24 hours, it might be a good idea to start the movie while you're connected to WiFi (which will start the rental clock ticking) and pause it.  You're not supposed to have to do this, but some people swear it prevents the occasional glitch.  I've only rented a couple of movies and they worked find on the plane.

  • HT1657 If I rent move and download it to my iPad 3 can I watch it later in a tunnel were there is no connection to the Internet?

Can I watch a rented movie without an Internet connection?

As long as the film has been fully downloaded then you shouldn't need to be online in order to then watch it

I have a rented movie on my iPad... Can I transfer it back to my Library so I can put it on a different device?  I have not watched it yet and want it on my other iPad.

Not if you rented and downloaded it on your iPad, you can only watch it on that - from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1657 :
If you download a rented movie on your computer: You can transfer it to a device such as your Apple TV (1st generation), iPhone, iPad, or iPod if it’s a standard-definition film (movies in HD can only be watched on your computer, iPad, iPhone 4 or later, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV). Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only exist on one device at a time.
If you download a rented movie on your iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV: It is not transferable to any other device or computer.
    Why it's like that I don't know
