As long as it has been fully downloaded then you should be able to watch it whilst offline

After I rent the movie, Can I download it, so I can watch it without internet?
All movies from the iTunes Store, rental and purchased, download completely to your computer or iOS device, and once the movie has completely downloaded can be watched without needing a network connection.

HT1657 When I rent a movie can I watch it on the plane with no wifi?
Can I watch a movie rented with no wifi (plane)
It did not work for me last week when I was flying. The video reported that it had expired. I just checked again while on wifi and it will play. It now reports that I have 23 hours to view it.

When I rent a movie can I watch it with out a WiFi connection
when I rent a movie do I need a WiFi connection to watch it
Hi hurtmark,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like you want to know if once a rental is downloaded will you need WiFi to play the movie. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.
iTunes Store: Viewing and downloading HD content on iPad - Apple Support
Movie Rentals on iPad
Movies rented on iPad cannot be transferred to other devices and can only be viewed on iPad.
An Internet connection to the iTunes Store is required to authorize playback of movie rentals.

HT1657 When I rent a movie is it on my iPad or does it stream from the cloud when I watch it?
When I rent a movie is it on my iPad or does it stream from the cloud when I view it on my iPad.
It is downloaded to the iPad's Videos app, rentals (and purchased films from iTunes) are not streamed.

Now everytime I try to play it I can't and I can't download it. I've been charged but can't watch my purchase. How do I just return it and rent it somewhere else? Too much of a hassle.
Try the 'report a problem' page to contact iTunes Support : http://reportaproblem.apple.com
If the 'report a problem' link doesn't work then you can try contacting iTunes support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/- click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Purchases, Billing & Redemption -
HT1657 When you rent a movie from iTunes does it need to be on coverflow and not grid?
I can't watch any TV shows/Movies/Music Videos unless there on my Ipod . The picture shows up fragmented and when the video does show up the sound is distored.
If you rented it on your iPad then it should have downloaded into its Videos app, and you should be able to watch it without being online - though some people have posted that they need to be online when first starting to watch a rental, so you may want to watch a few seconds whilst you have internet connection (you have 24 hours if you are in the US, 48 hours elsewhere, after starting to watch a rental before it expires).

I bought an Apple TV and when I rent a movie, I get a display saying that no HDCP is available. How can I solve this problem?
Have you verified that your TV is HDCP compliant? Consult manual and/or post model so someone can check.

When I rent a movie from itunes library on my desktop it is not showing up under rented on my Apple tv? This has not happened before?. Can I rent or buy directly from Apple TV? I hope someone can answer this silly question.
CarolWelcome to the Apple Community.
You can purchase or rent it direct from the Apple TV or from the computer. If you rent/purchase from the computer, it must fully download to the computer before it will show up under computers > rentals on the TV. -
When I rent a movie using Apple TV,it takes several hours to load. At this point, I opt to watch later. When I try to watch the movie, it starts loading again and tells me that it will be ready to watch in one hour forty four minutes. This can't be normal. Is there something I am doing wrong? Any suggestions.
If it's taking several hours then that is likely due to your internet connection. You can verify at speedtest.net
6mbps required for instant 720P
8mbps for 1080P
You can switch to SD in the settings (which only requires 3mbps)
You can also check istumbler or netstumbler for interference
Make sure you are on your ISPs DNS
The reloading is normal. There is no accessible storage on ATV. The small flash is used for caching streamed content, if you access other things or turn the device off it will be flushed. -
When I rent a movie on Apple TV it tells me I have 4 hrs until I can play it...How can I stream the movie so I can watch it right away?
AppleTV has fixed size rental files. These will have a given bitrate of so many Mbps.
For HD the minimum recommended internet speed for near instant rentals is 6 Mbps.
If you have less than that then clearly a movie cannot play in real time - say you get 3 Mbps connection but film is 6 Mbps you only get half the data in 'real time' so can't play. They get around this by calculating how much of a rental needs to download to memory to the allow the remainder of the data to follow on. So for your rental after 4 hours enough of the stream will have 'downloaded' to allow you to start watching with the remaining data following on as you watch in real time.
I suspect you are getting under 2-3 Mbps or therabouts.
Your options are to get a faster connection or change settings to rent SD not HD - SD generally starts much quicker.
An annoying thing with AppleTV2 is that if you do something else while 'prebuffering' a chunk of the film, this chunk can be flushed from memory to do the other task eg stream local movie or view movie trailers.
I'm sure you've looked at streaming video on webpages in the past where it stops and starts all the time when your connection is slow. This is what would happen to your rental if AppleTV tried to play it on a slow connection - it would kep stopping and starting.
Netflix on the other hand apparently adjusts quality (and hence bitrate) downwards with slower connections so they seem to work quicker. -
I got a new iPhone today. Everything is backed up on the cloud. I was able to down loud from my iTunes. I got my Music but I rented two movies I didn't get to watch. I can't find them to down loud. Of I have to pay to rent them again ??
Does the original library file still exist on the computer? Hopefully when creating the new library it was done in a seperate folder as I do not believe iTunes allows for two library files in the same location.

I have rented a movie on the iPad but I don't have enough memory for it to download - so I wanted to make it available on my Apple TV - looking at the FAQ it doesn't look like I am allowed to do this! Why not - I've purchased/rented this movie I should be able to watch on any device??! Can I get a refund for something I can't watch??
As it says on the page that you posted from :
If you download a rented movie on your iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV: It is not transferable to any other device or computer.
Why it's like that I don't think that Apple have said (these are user-to-user forums). If you haven't downloaded it on your iPad then have you checked to see if you can download it on your computer's iTunes (Store > Check For Available Downloads menu option) or Apple TV ?
If it doesn't show on either of them then you can try contacting iTunes Support and see if they will let you download it on a different computer/device or refund or credit you : http://reportaproblem.apple.com
If the 'report a problem' link doesn't work then you can try contacting iTunes Support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page -
Help... Have ate in living room & bedroom & I could works fine on iPhone4 as well as ipad2 wifi. I have home sharing enabled on all but when I rented a movie it was all good & charged but the download took over 24 hours & only in the bedroom.... Please help
The remote app can either automatically find libraries available on a network (with home sharing available) or if you haven't got home sharing enabled, you can manually pair an itunes library with the remote app (using a number that is generated by the app and then typed into the itunes library).
That is why I am so confused, as it seems to be the home sharing that is the problem!
