HT1661 I am trying to migrate using firewire to a new mac.

When cables are connected and the old mac is rebooted as target disc the new mac cannot see the old mac to start migration. I have update all software. (old mac 10.6.8 and new mac is 10.7) any ideas. The new mac asks: 'make sure both computers are connected to the same network'

The target disk mode is not working.
Just use a external drive to copy from the old Mac
Then create the same named user accounts on the new machine, log into each of them and import their respective files manually into their Music, Pictures Movies, Documents folders, should be done a lot faster than Migration over Wifi.
Don't copy 10.6 Library, that's different in 10.7 and now hidden. Don't copy the entire users folder, just the contents of Music, Docs, Pics etc into the same folders on the 10.7 machine. Drag and drop copy, simple and elegant, less issues.
Programs: reinstall these from fresh sources using the same license codes, delete off the old machine.
Some times you have to contact the developer for a new key for the new machine, the old key is retired.
This method is better than using Migration Assistant, less chances of problems/corruption/slow downs, you'll have to tweak things a bit more again of course, minor really.
As you should know you can't use older PPC based programs on the 10.7 machine anyway.

I have old folders in TB for a RETIRED account. I'm trying to move the mail to a new mac. If I want more than headers Thunderbird wants a password? Solution?

As I said above.
I had moved a bunch of old emails using TBird and I'm trying to get them moved to a new mac. The email has long been cancelled and the company who hosted it doesn't exist any more. The domain has changed hands a couple of times.
I set up the accounts on the mac that are still active, backed up as told from the old machine.
When I follow the procedure, I get the headers of the messages only and I can't move them to any other photo. TBird gets in a loop of asking for a password for me to move the mail.
I have read/write privileges on everything. Yet these messages are useless. I've tried to import them into the mail app, and apple can import 2 folders but the others don't show up as an option.
Any suggestions?

Navigate to ~/Library: Thunderbird: Profiles: your_profile: Mail: Local Folders. Identify the mailboxes you seek to use in Mail.app.
Each mailbox has three pieces to it - i.e. inbox.sbd, inbox.msf and inbox with no extension.
*Take the file with no extension, hold down the Option key (so it also stays in the folder) and drag it to the desktop.
*Rename this copy with .mbox as the file extension. For example, inbox becomes inbox.mbox.
* Open Mail.app and select File: Import, choose Other, and navigate to the desktop and click Choose. (Choose the file you just renamed.) Your mailbox(es) should appear in the import window and will import into Mail.app.

This is apparently due to a problem with Mail's handling of whitespace (according to the posted comments). boot from mac os dvd, go until top meny appears, select disk utility from there, repair HD in whole, quit disk utilities, run startup disk, select OS X to boot from, quit, quit installer

I have the same problem. It is only with tv shows and only with programs I have downloaded after the software update.
Apple support sent me the above link too....but it doesn't solve the problem...my computer is authorized and the content is in my library and will play on my Mac air, but it will not sync the tv shows, it keeps saying my computer isn't authorized for it.

Chas50 I would recommend removing the currently installed Adobe Creative software. You can then install the new versions of the Adobe Creative software included with your membership. Your music will only be where you put it.
Did you copy all of your music from your backup copy of your old computer to your new one?

Migrate using firewire to thunderbolt

I've got an early 2008 iMac with (1) Firewire 800 port and (1) Firewire 400. I want to migrate music, photos etc., to my new Macbook Pro, but it has Thunderbolt ports. I can't seem to find a clear connection path. Do I buy a Firewire cable and Thurderbolt adapter, or vice versa? Confused. Thanks!

I recommend you to buy a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter and a FireWire 800 cable to connect your old iMac to your new MacBook. This is the fastest way of transferring files to your new Mac.
Then, put the old iMac in Target Disk mode by holding down the T key while your iMac is starting up, so you will see the FireWire icon on the iMac's display.
Now, turn on your MacBook Pro and set it up. You will be asked to restore files, so select the option to restore files from a Mac and follow its steps. You can restore whatever you want.
If you have already set up the MacBook, you can use Migration Assistant > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5872?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US It will create a new user account with the transferred files

My dad bought a Mini but has been using it for a few months but didn't transfer anything from his old Mac. All his address book entries and files are still on his original Mac. Can Migration Assistant still be of help to transfer over the data without erasing what he's accumlated on his new Mac? Is it going to write over his email for instance?

Migration Assistant is not the tool you need to use at this point. Instead you should manually copy the data you want from the old computer to the new computer. If both computers have Firewire ports then use Target Disk Mode - Transferring files between two computers using FireWire. Boot the old computer into TDM and the new computer normally. You should then find a disk icon for the old computer's drive on the Desktop of the new computer.
Before you do any of the described file copying below be sure you have quit Mail and Address Book if they are now open except where directed.
For Mail you open Mail and select Import from the File menu. Check the top option to import from Apple Mail. Navigate on the old computer to its /Users/username/Library/Mail/ folder and then locate a folder named "Mailboxes." Select the folder and click on the Open button. Select the mailboxes you want to import and click on the Import/OK button. This will import the old mail to a new set of mailboxes in Mail under a mailbox named Imported. You can then move the old mail to wherever you want in Mail.
For contacts locate the /Users/username/Library/Applications Support/AddressBook/ folder. Copy the entire folder to the new computer to the same location on the new computer.
Last, navigate to the /Users/username/Library/Preferences/ folder and copy these preference files: com.apple.mail.plist and all beginning with com.apple.AddressBook. Copy them to the same location on the new computer.

Cannot use Creative Cloud in new Mac after using Migration Assistant

I used Migration Assistant to set up my new Mac (new computer is a Retina MacBookPro; so was old computer). I could not open any of my CC apps. When I open Creative Cloud Desktop App it is completely blank (no tabs for Apps, Fonts, Files, etc. -- No means of installing or updating apps). I uninstalled Creative Cloud and reinstalled (several times) but got the same results. I have also deleted all the Application Folders for CC apps that cam ever with Migration Assistant.
Any ideas?
