HT1687 Iphone 3G froze during reset, how do I fix this?

Greetings Smart Techies.
I bought a iphone 3G 8gig yesterday. it was working fine when I bought it. It still had the previous users content which I wanted to delete.
I went in under settings - reset - erase all content and settings. That was over 18 hours ago. The phone only shows a screen with the apple logo. I've turned off with both the top botton and the front button depessed at the same time until the iphone turns off and is off for several minutes. When I turn it on there is no sound (there was yesterday) and the only image is the dark screen and the apple logo. I have tried plugging it into 3 different desktops, and 2 different cables, all apple.
The only thing that might be causing the trouble is that there isn't a sim card in the phone at present, during this reset.
Would that be the problem? And if it is, if I put my sim in there now, will it do any damage or trouble with/to my sim?
Thanks for your help. This phone is a gift for my daughter who's heading off in a few days to NZ where even 2nd hand iphones are still pricey.

I had the same problem. In the end I downloaded it manually. Here's the steps assuming you are on a Mac and have an iPad Air (Wifi). If not you can find other restore links here.
In the terminal (it kept failing to download in Safari):
curl http://appldnld.apple.com/iOS7.1/031-4521.20140310.D2Ydl/iPad4,1_7.1_11D167_Rest ore.ipsw >>~/Desktop/iPad4,1_7.1_11D167_Restore.ipsw
Once the file has downloaded, move it to ~/Library/iTunes/iPad Software Updates/
Quit and relaunch iTunes.
Should now work for you.

Questions:
1. What version of the Mac OS are you running (Apple > About this Mac)?
2. What version of the iOS are you running (Settings > About)?
3. Do you backup your computer (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427)?
--- If you don't regularly backup your computer, now is the time to start.
4. Do you backup your iPhone (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766)?
Check the calendar list on the left hand side of iCal. Is it that the individual events are duplicated or is it just that you have the same calendar listed more than once? If its that you have more than 1 copy of each calendar, you can delete one of the duplicate calendars to eliminate the duplicates.
If you find that it is the individual events that are duplicated then there are 2 options:
1. Restore your computer iCal database or iPhone from a backup made before the duplication occurred.
2. Use a duplication removal program (or do it by hand) to remove the duplicates: http://www.nhoj.co.uk/icaldupedeleter/
If you have a backup made before the duplication occurred, reply back with what kind of backup you have and I'll suggest how to recover the calendars.
To avoid this issue in the future:
Keep regular backups. They are your best defense against data anomalies which are a fact of life in computers (although hopefully rare).
Keep your computer and iPhone software fully up to date (Apple > Software Update / Settings > General > Software Update).
Make sure the date and time on your computer and iPhone are correct before you sync the two devices.
Make sure the cable connections between the two is solid and that the cable shows no signs of physical damage.

You need at least as much space as you have used on the iPod. Could be as much as 64 GB but is probably much less.
Find a way to delete what you do not need on the computer. Start by emptying the Recycle Bin.

Same here. Have exported a handful of movies before..faced this issue for the first time a few days ago. What footage are you trying to edit and export? (E.g. Shot with camera app, other social media apps like Snapchat, Vine, Instagram?)
I did some troubleshooting..
I was putting together all saved videos from Snapchat.. no luck. Export screen comes up, but progress bar doesn't move.
Mixed some footage in there shot with actual iPhone camera app.. no luck.
Removed all Snapchat footage.. it worked straight away.
BUT ... it would make sense if I didn't just compile a bunch of Snapchat vids a few weeks ago and export them just fine?
So it's something to do with the actual footage I assume?

And it won't by design and intention since you are not syncing your iPhone with your iTunes library on your computer.
If you have authorized the computer with your iTunes account with iTunes, with your iPhone connected - at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.
For contacts and calendar events, is Outlook 2003, 2007, or 2010 available?

Did you try holding the power button and home button until the apple logo appears?
Are you able to connect to itunes? If you can, back it up and restore.
If nothing else, take it to the apple store and have the genius look at it. If they can't resolve it then they will likely to replace your phone.
