Trying to backup my iphone to my computer and i am receiving the error message that it cannot be backed up because it was "disconnected"

Clean the connector on the bottom of the phone with a soft dry toothbrush, and inspect it with a magnifying glass to make sure it is clean and has no bent pins.
If this does not fix it disable the firewall and antivirus on your phone. And if that doesn't fix it you most likely have a hardware problem.
To ask Apple call them or visit an Apple store.

I've iPhone 5 and it has ios 6.1.2. I'm using windows 8. While I'm syncing the iPhone, I've an error that is saying "iTunes could not backup the iPhone because the iPhone is disconnected". I did nearly everything to backup but I couldn't achieve it.
Could someone help me to fix this problem please?

A big THANK YOU!! to you! Your suggestions worked!
Before I changed USB ports (more on that in a sec...), I employed one of your suggestions that you gave to someone else with the same problem...and that was to clean the connector on the bottom of the phone with a soft dry tooth brush. I couldn't believe the amount of lint that came out! Especially what was found in either end...had to do some very careful picking. (Almost enough lint to knit a small sweater!!)
Changing the USB port was the second and final step required for a successful backup. My computer is a laptop, and I did have a USB Bluetooth adapter (for another device) installed. I removed the adapter, plugged the iPhone into that USB port, crossed my fingers...and it worked!!!
Now if I can figure out the rest of this darn program, I might upgrade to a new iPhone!

Select your iDevice in the iTunes.
Choose the Summary screen (tab) and scroll to the bottom of the screen.
Then un-select Encrypt iPhone backup.
iTunes will then prompt you to “Enter the password to unlock your iPhone backup”, enter the password you set originally.

Try runing iTunes in admin mode. That fixed the issue for me. You can either right click on the shortcut on your desktop and choose to run as an admin each time you launch it or go to the advanced tab under security on the program itself and click the run as admin every time.

HT1351 My iphone was disconnected during a sinc and now has songs that are grey with a red circle and sqare in the middle of it. None of these songs play. tried deleting all the songs and re sincing but to no avail???

Thanks, this is not an ideal answer but probably the most sensible one in my case.
I will try it unless someone has a better suggestion, but I'll wait a bit as it will take me a few days anyway (I had actually tried to create a new smaller playlist or download by album, but at this stage the music app is not letting me queue a list of songs for download - I think I will have to disable and re-enable iTunes match which will probably delete all the songs).
I have to say I am not very impressed with Apple here - having an online backup of all your data and beeing able to restore it to a new device easily was a strong selling point of iCloud. For music, they are Definitly not delivering at the stage.

I have downloaded iTunes 8, but when syncing my phone and trying to download the newest iPhone software (2.1), I keeep getting an error message that reads as follows:
"iTunes could not sync ^0 to the iPhone "xxxx's iPhone" because the iPhone is disconnected".....when it is indeed NOT disconnected. Any ideas or fixes? The new iPhone software has been downloaded on iTunes, but not yet downloaded to my phone due to the aforementioned error message.

On your iPhone, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage. There you should be able to see how much of your used storage is allocated to different things (ex., iphone backup, ipad backup, mail). From there you should be able to figure out what is going on.

Cannot backup Ipad or Iphone to Cloud or Itunes

This seems to be a major problem for quite a few people and with the purchase of an Ipad 3 i found myself in the situation where i wanted to be sure i had a good backup of my Ipad 1. Both my Iphone and my Ipad would not back up to either the Icloud or to itunes. in both situations the devices would take forever to move the progress bar and at some point they would either timeout or fail with an error. I have been all over the support forums and have tried most of the suggestions without sucess, An hour spent with the Genius at the Apple Store and an hour with phone support did not help solve the situation. Ths store suggested i blow away the Ipad due to corrupted software and rebuild it but of course without a backup i would loose a years worth of data which was not acceptable. The phone support did however help me find my bad backup file that is located on windows under %appdata% Roaming/ Apple Computer. Just search on the %appdata% to find the roaming folder and then you will find Roaming and the Apple Computer folder. Mine had grown to the point where it had 100's of thousands of entries and for certain was at least part of the issue.
What i utimately discovered was my problem was the fact i had MotionX GPS set to backup to Itunes. I have quite a few map downloads and my guess is that each tile is being treated as a file. As my backup file had 100's of thousands of small files my guess is that the backup process was trying to file each one of these tiles, create a index and then trying to see if it had already been stored. The number of tiles was simply too great for the backup process to handle. Once I turned off the backup option within MotionX I was able to fairly quickly backup both my Iphone 3 and my Ipad 1 to Itunes.
If you are having backup problems and you have MotionX GPS you may want to try turning off the "Backup to Itunes" feature under the "Maps" tab.

Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
