Unfortunately it looks like your 3GS' battery has expanded so much that it cracked the whole case wide open. If you have AppleCare on your device then you're all set, just take it to your local Apple Store.
If not, then still take it to the store. Complain about the battery bursting, and make sure to tell them that it's for sure a defect (you'd think it's obvious, but sometimes you just need to drive the point in), and that it potentially could have been and still be a hazard.
Remind them that the phone has not been in any adverse conditions, extreme temperatures, or abused in any way but that you just merely used it normally. (I'm assuming that's the truth?)
If they're good about it they should replace the broken phone for you; but unfortunately there's little chance of repairing your current device.

I'm starting to serihously think this phone has been jailbroken... I've got a senior technical support advisor at Apple who is working on the case. He has gone through everything he can possibly think of, but won't take "no" for an answer.
At the moment, he has logged everything with the Engineering Department, who is going to look into it further using the IMEI number and see what they come up with. If worse comes to worse, Apple will apparently replace the phone for a fee. The problem is that it is 800+ days out of warranty...
Anyway, we'll see how we go. If anybody has got any ideas about this, please continue to provide answers. I appreciate all responses -

my iphone 3gs died, hooked up to charger for 30 mins. came back. its lightin up and makin noises but screen wont come on.
Here is what you should do turn the device on hold the home button and the power button until the device turn off keep holding and when the device reboots release the power button but hol the home button until it shows the iTunes logo then restore it

after unlocking over the phone from ATT and resetting iphone 3gs I keep getting the same error message "could not activate phone" neither Apple Store Tech or ATT were able to fix this .
Itunes displays a message saying "there is no SIM installed in the phone you're trying to activate" even if there is the same SIM that was working minutes before.
The SIM works on a different phone I tested it.

Well it’s going on day 6 and still sporadic to no EDGE on my iPhone. At one time, it was thought to be a defective iPhone – since my partner’s iPhone works just fine.
After over three hours on the land line with AT&T and Apple, I was sent to the local Apple store for a replacement. Of course, as soon as I walked into the Apple store my iPhone worked just fine. ;-( The local store replaced my iPhone and suggested I go home and activate the phone as a NEW iPhone, that way if there was a bug in my data it would not carry over to the new phone. Did that and well… still sporadic to no EDGE. By the way, I have the Big White “E” to the right of the 5 bars and AT&T .
AT&T said last week they has “Software” issues in my area, but the CSR I talked to did not know what the issues were or if they were the cause of my problems. He did say they would call me back today to see how my iPhone was doing, but alas, no call back.
When I’m next to my partner, trying to access the same feature, his iPhone is just so fast. Mine hangs up, draws out and finally I get the error message, “Could Not Activate EDGE”. I am updated to version “1.1.4(4A102)”. New (refurbished) iPhone direct from Apple.
I remember reading a while back about some problems others had when they upgraded to from 1.1.3 to 1.1.4. I never had those problems, but it sure looks like they may have started. Does anyone remember what the problems with 1.1.4 were, what was done if anything to correct them, and best of all any suggestions?
By the way, this is Seattle, not some small – out of the way place where connection and signal strength is expected to be second rate. Also, I had full function of my iPhone from the day I bought it in June 2007, all the way up to Thursday March 20, at 2120.

Videos shot on my iPhone 3GS aren't getting imported into iPhoto
Videos I've shot on my iPhone 3GS aren't importing into iPhoto - but the photos are. Noticed this a few weeks ago, believe it occurred as a result of my migration from my old MBP to my new one in mid Jan of this year. Did a rebuild of iPhoto, killed the iPod Photo Cache, to no avail. I had been noticing an issue during the sync process, toward the end, I'd get some message that the "iPhone file 'iPhone' can't be found. Googled and saw that I should kill the iPod Photo cache and turn off "manually manage music and videos." This fixed the "file iPhone not found" issue. I killed all the photos and videos in my camera roll (none show up when I select iPhone in the iPhoto window - so a remaining corrupted photo isn't the issue) and then took a photo and video. The photo imports but not the video. Ideas?
Also, another question, If I go back to manually managing music and videos, then go back to the iPhoto tab in iTunes and select which albums from iPhoto to sync back to my iPhone, is it possible to sync videos (originally shot on my iPhone) back to my iPhone? I want to create an album in iPhoto titled "iPhone Videos."Thanks for your reply, Graham. I actually solved it last night after 3 hours of fiddling with it. Cleared the photos out of my iPhone, cleaned up and reorganized my photos in iPhoto (deleted & recreated albums), deselected and reselected "manually manage music and videos" in iTunes, deleted iPod Photo Cache (again), rebuilt my iPhoto database and something out of this mix worked.
Something interesting happened when I opened iTunes (w/ iPhone docked) - it asked me to select my photo library (or something to that effect). When I selected "iPhoto Library" it gave me a dialog box saying this isn't the the library that was being synced (not the exact words, but close). I went ahead with it. The weird thing is that the library I selected is my only one - the one I've always used, so not sure what's up with that. Anyway, something worked. Photos and videos are all in the right place. Videos are also now syncing to iPhoto from my iPhone. -
Some songs that I've bought on iTunes won't play on my iPhone 3GS even though they used to and they will still play on iTunes. Anyone know what I can do to get these songs to play on my iPhone again? Please help!
No, I haven't figured it out. And no one from Apple has contacted me to help. Very frustrating. Sure makes me want to not buy music on iTunes and just buy CD's.

While updating my iphone 3GS, i am getting a message that no sim card is installed in iphone. also my iphone has shows the message that iphone could not be activated because activation server is unavailable. I have reinserted the some, yet the problem persists. Please help.
If your phone was EVER hacked to unlock it, when you updated the hack was removed and it's now re-locked to its original carrier and will work only with a SIM card from that carrier..

You didn't buy an 'unlocked' iPhone 3GS - you bought a 'hacked' one.
Updating to iOS 5 removed the hack and the unofficial unlock.
All you can do is try to find out which network the phone is locked to and ask them if they can unlock it properly.
Otherwise, sell it or throw it away and buy an officially unlocked phone from an official source. -
