HT1694 How do I reduce the number of emails in my iPhone inbox?

In the previous iOS I was able to choose the number of days I could sync mail back to. Since the update, I have years worth of emails synced on my phone. Any clues how to reduce this number?

This is no longer an option.
Feel free to let Apple know about it by sending them feedback:  www.apple.com/feedback

  • In Mail 2.1.3 how do I reduce the number of emails?

    Hi,
I hope this is the right discussion group for a question about Apple Mail. I didn't see Mail in the list of discussion topics, but I see that Mail is an application because it's in my application folder.
I have over a thousand emails in my inbox and in sent mail. I've been told that this can affect the performance of Mail and that I need to get rid of a lot of emails.
In Entourage there was a backup or export function. I don't see anything like that in Mail. Also, I'm well along creating and using Smart Mailboxes and it seems to me that if I get rid of emails in inbox and sent mail that they'll drop out of the Smart Mailboxes.
I do notice Mail running slower than before.
What to do? How to do it?
    Thanks for your input,
    Rafael

    Hi BDAqua,
What do you mean "...one mailbox of about 20." 20 what?
    IMAP.
Yes. I'd like to know how to back them up. They won't be available to Mail Smart Mailboxes either, will they? At least they'll be there in case of a crash. I use Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC http://www.bombich.com/index.html) and make incremental backups. My entire hard disk is backed up. But Safari Bookmarks, for instance, don't get backed up in their latest, daily version unless I've done Safari>File>Export Bookmarks to a folder. Then CCC picks up that folder. Same with mail, CCC back doesn't pick up anything. A friend mentioned .mbox.
As I said, I'm creating many smart mailboxes and folders. What's to keep all the work I'm doing in setting up the smart mailboxes from disappearing in the event of a crash? Are the smart mailboxes able to be backed up?
Would you remind me please: I was told a while back that to quote from a post, as you did above, to "just prefix it with a >". I did that successfully once, but I tried it here and couldn't remember where to put the prefix, I mean, in your message, or in your message below here in "Replying To:".
It's getting late. I better leave it at that.
    Thanks,
    Rafael
PS My Mail seemed to be moving slowly, expecially noticeable when clicking on 'Inbox' then waiting for the window to fill up. Maybe it's just the way it is.
I didn't get back to you sooner because I didn't set up my preferences here correctly in order to get emailed when there is a reply.

  • How do I restrict the number of emails that my iphone downloads on ios7

On ios6 I had my mail set up to only download 25 messages per box to my iphone.  I have updated to ios7 today and this option has disappeared from the settings menu and now my phone has downloaded more then the 25 that I want it to.
How can I specify that I just want the 25??
    Thanks.

    No there isn't.
Have the emails been read via webmail access using a browser on your computer or with an email client on your computer if both email accounts are being accessed with an email client on your computer?
With that many unread emails on the iPhone, that sounds like one or both email accounts were created as a POP account. When creating an existing email account as a POP account with an email client on a computer or on a device such as the iPhone, all existing received emails at the incoming mail server that remain on the server are downloaded as new and unread emails.
If the accounts were created as an IMAP account and all emails have been read elsewhere, they would not be available on the iPhone as unread emails since all server stored mailboxes with an IMAP account are kept synchronized with the server.

You can't change that.  It's a function of the OS and cannot be altered.

How do I reduce the number of pages in an iPhoto book from 100 to 50.  I have selected 153 photos to be put in the book and iPhoto automatically designated the book to be 100 pages in length.

If the auto place put photos on all 100 pages you'll need to reset the layout on the first 50 pages so all photos will fit in just those 50 pages.  Then add the photos to the first 50 pages and delete the last 50 according to the link Larry provided.

    With thanks in advance -

Contact your carrier, as the number of rings before voicemail is controlled by them. Some carriers have a way to adjust this using GSM codes. You can look on your carrier's site for instructions.

  • How can I limit the number of emails retained on my ipad air?

How can I limit the number of emails that are retained on my iPad Air?  Because of legal requirements of a long-term project, I cannot permanently delete emails relating to that project from my ISP's mail server.  My gmail account contains over 17,000 emails and, upon setting up my new iPad, and updating to ios 7.1.1, I now have all 17,000+ emails taking up space.  I would like to limit the emails by count as I was able to do on my old iPad running ios 5.1.1 OR to retain them based on date range.  I have not found any instructions on the support discussions or general iPad blogs that allow me to do that.  Any way around this problem?
I also miss the 5.1.1 mail search feature that allowed me to narrow the search by from/to/subject/all.  Does anyone know if that feature is available using some little-known ios 7.1.1 feature?
    Thanks for your help.

IOS 7.1.1 doesn't show a "days to sync" parameter anywhere in SETTINGS/Mail,Contacts,Calendars/ACCOUNTS/GMAIL Account/ GMAIL Acccount Info.  There is nothing in iTunes relating to such an option either.  So, it seems I'm back to square one.
If you have a decent mail provider like Microsoft Hotmail or Outlook.com mail it does.
If you have Gmail it does not.  Quite right. Gmail is rubbish.

You can't. Why on earth would you attempt to manage 2500 emails with setting up a folder structure or some means of doing so? Simply keeping them in an single inbox is not realistic, no matter what email client you use.

That issue can be caused by the FastestFox extension.
    * FastestFox Options > General, uncheck "Enhance Awesomebar"
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

You need to delete your current hotmail account set up on your iphone.
Once this has done click 'Add Account' and select the new 'outlook.com' tab.
Set up your hotmail account again from scratch and this will then allow you to select how many weeks/months of emails you sync to your phone.
Im not sure if anyone else had a similar problem to me prior to iOS 7, but if i deleted an email from my hotmail account on my iphone - it wouldnt sync with my actual hotmail account. So when i logged in online all the emails I had deleted on my phone would still be showing as unread.
But by setting the account up as above, they now sync perfectly.
    Well for me anyway
