HT1695 Updating APS on the original iPad

When I try to update my APS I get the message, "cannot connect to the iTunes store" even though I am connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi.  What are the possible problems?

See if this works for you ....
Settings>General>Date and Time>Set Automatically>Off. Set the date ahead to some time in the future - a year or so ahead. Try to update the apps after you do that. Reset the date to automatic when you are done.

  • TS3274 I have the original iPad- 18 mos old. I tried to download an app that required flash player. Went to the apple store and was told to update my software to iOS 5.1.1. I did and now everything I had previously installed as apps are frozen. :( HELP!

I have the original iPad- about 18 mod old. I tried to download an etool program and it required iflashplayer. My iPad wouldn't do it. I went to the apple store and they told me to update my software to iOS 5.1.1 which I did . Now none of the apps I had installed prior to this work. The icons are still on my screen but when you touch them, it just blinks and nothing happens..like the screen is frozen. How do I restore all of these apps and favorites that I had on prior to this update? Please speak in very non- tech terms if possible. I am VERY low tech unfortunately!

You must use iTunes. Connect your device to your computer, open iTunes, select your device in the sidebar and press Restore. Then, you can restore your device from a backup, and sync the device with iTunes to transfer your files to it pressing Sync button

  • HT4623 why is the original iPad no longer able to update

I have the original ipad & it says it is no longer eligible to update.  It is has plenty of memory so that isn't the problem

The minimum requirements (processor, ram, etc) don't meet the requirements for the current version of iOS.  Apple determined that the original iPad was not robust enough to run iOS 6 without degrading the user experience being degraded beyond their level of an acceptable costumer experience.
More or less if you want the newer versions/features it is time to upgrade.  I can say that most likely every 2-3 years is the upgrade cycle for iPads.

  • HT4623 is the original ipad compatible with the ios 7 update?

is the original ipad compatible with the ios 7 update?

No. The iPad 1 can only run iOS levels up to 5.1.1.

  • Will the original iPad no longer receive updates when iOS 7 comes out?

I have been told my original iPad will no longer receive software updates after iOS 7 comes out. Furthermore, I was told I would no longer be able to purchase apps and that the apps I have would no longer receive updates making my iPad totally useless. Is all of this correct?

I imagine that it would be up to the software developers to make sure that their apps will still work with iOS 5.1.1 which is the highest upgrade for the original iPad. So as long as apps are available for iOS 5 you will still be able to purchase them.
If your iPad functions today with the apps that you already have on it, it will still work when iOS 7 is released. A new software upgrade has no bearing on whether your iPad will still be functional. It just will not be able to download new apps that require iOS 6 or iOS 7.

  • HT4972 I have the original iPad with the original iOS, as I've never updated before. How do I do this?

I have the original iPad with v3.2.1 and have never upgraded.  How can I upgrade to the latest iOSfor the original iPad?

Update it from iTunes on a computer as described at the bottom of this article; devices running an iOS version prior to 5.0 can't be updated straight from the device. It will be updated to the latest compatible version.
The third generation iPod touch and original iPad can’t be updated past 5.1.1.

  • I have what I think is the original Ipad, and it will no longer send out emails.  Is it possible to update it, or am I just stuck with a $500 electronic device that will no longer work the way I need it to.  Some of the original apps will no longer work

I have what I think is the original Ipad, and suddenly it will no longer send out emails and some of the apps that worked prior to the newer Ipads coming out will no longer work.  Can this be updated, or am I stuck with an expensive electronic device that will no longer serve my needs?

  • HT4623 My iPad is one of the original iPads. On settings, there is not a "software update" to click on. Any suggestions?

I have the original operating system that came with the original iPad.  I have not updated. When I go to settings > general,  there is not "system update" available to click on. How do I update?

Settings>General>Software Update is currently only available for IOS 5 and above.
If your are using IOS 4, you need to connect to iTune (computer) to update software

Is the operating system on the original ipad update capable?
My menu has no "Update OS" option, and no iCloud option.

The Software Update option (and iCloud) only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases (you may also want to copy photos off the iPad as well) and then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'. You may also want to copy off the iPad any important documents, notes, files etc e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case.
You can then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. For the iPad Mini the iOS is 6.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

  • HT4623 Why won't the original iPad's update to the newer software? Applications like iBook & CTVGo will not upgrade without the iPad upgrading.

Have the original iPad that won't update past 5.1.1. Applications are requiring newer update versions. Why won't my iPad update past this version?

IT's because of the system specifcations are probarly not able to handle the new requirements for the iOS 6+ if you want/need those applications you'll have to purchase a new iPad

  • HT4081 I have the original iPad (1) which is ios 3.2.  Can I update it to at least ios 4.2?

I have the original iPad (1) with ios 3.2 Can I update it to at least 4.2?

You can update to the current version (5.1.1) as that is the only version that is 'signed' by Apple (some people have said that iOS 5 slows down the first gen iPad).
You will need the latest version of iTunes on your computer - you can check if you are up-to-date via, on a PC,  'Help > Check For Updates', and on a Mac 'iTunes > Check For Updates'
When you have that installed, connect the iPad to it and copy any purchases off it via File > Transfer Purchases and then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'. You may also want to copy off the iPad any important documents, notes, files etc e.g via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case.

I contacted apple and they checked and yes the originsl ipad cant support ios 6 - so cant use procreate have also checked the procreate website and it appears they advised itunes of this - ideally there should end up being two versions of procreate - one for ios 5 and one for ios 6 -

  • I bought  an iPad 3 yesterday; this is an upgrade from the original iPad. I was told that migrating the data would be simple. My desktop is a PC with Windows 7 Professional. I can't find a way to back up my old iPad so I can restore the data to the new

I bought an update to the original iPad an iPad 3. In was told that migrating the data from my old iPad to the new will be a snap. Alas, it isn't. My desktop is a new high end PC that came preloaded with Windows 7 Professional and I have had nothing but problems. My earlier computer was XP and everything, including my Apple interface, in particular iTunes, worked without problems. When I was trying to back up my data from the old iPad to my desktop, the only thing it would do is synchronize, then got an error message to download the latest iTunes, which I did but it still did not work. I have a lot of music both purchased through iTunes and a lot of others which were CDs that were copied to the desktop. I also have a lot of books through Kindle and other books in iBooks and audio books from other sources, plus two iPods I want to sync. I need some advise on where I find the back up feature in iTunes so I can copy all the data on from my old iPad. Your help would be most appreciated. Thank you.

In technical support, sometimes you have to make educated guesses. I'm sorry that you were offended.
iTunes does prompt when it is going to erase a device, and the message is clear.
She said in her message that she was able to successfully sync the old ipad. This indicated to me that itunes wiping the data was not an issue, because either it had been setup at the apple store (in which case it doesn't actually wipe the ipad despite saying it will*) (*based on a single case I saw), or because the itunes media folder was migrated.
Furthermore, my solution was to tell her how to backup her ipad (by either doing it manually, or as a last resort, by deleting the corrupt backup -- that she couldn't access anyway.)
I got that last part of the instructions from the "Taking Control of your iphone" book which I found samples of when I did a google search for "corrupted backup itunes".
She marked this as a solution, so it worked for her.

  • Problem installing iBooks on the original iPad

    Hi!
I have three apple products in the house: an old original iPad, an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 5s.
The original iPad is on iOS 5.1.1 - there is no support of a newer version of iOS for this product. I was particularly using this device for  reading, with tons of books loaded in iBooks.
Yesterday the device (itself) decided to update the iBooks app but was stuck in the middle. I had to delete the app and tried to reinstall it anew from the AppStore. However the version currently available at the AppStore won't install, telling that I need to update to iOS 7 (which is not available for this device).
Is there a way to install an older version of iBooks on the original iPad?
    Thank you.

Yes, there is a way to download iBooks to your original iPad.  Last October, Apple quietly came up with a way.  Follow these simple steps.
    Open iTunes on your computer
Go to the App Store and download iBooks to your iTunes librarry
No, go to your iPad.  Tap the purchased tab in the App Store
You should see iBooks with a cloud icon next to it
Tap the cloud and you will be given the option of downloading a version for a lower iOS version
