HT1731 How does one configure a NEW (unconfigured) AirPort Express to join a WiFi network that has a non-broadcasted SSID?

The following KB article assumes that the user has a configured AirPort Express:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1731
I reset my AirPort Express, because the SSID of the WiFi network changed and its name is not broadcast for security reasons.
When using the "AirPort Utility" ( not the "AirPort Admin Utility" – which is the wrong name of the application in the article! ) the application found the unconfigured AirPort Express, connected to the LAN via ethernet; However, when selected, the configuration "wizard" assumes that the user wants to configure the AirPort Express as a WiFi base station.
I selected the option to have the AirPort Express join a WiFi network; However, the AirPort Utility sent back an error, saying that a "Base station" ( WiFi network?! ) could not be found. Well, guess what? That's because the SSID of the network I want the AirPort Express to join.
UGH!
...and the best part is that there is no other solution, but to run with the AirPort Utility's assumptions, configure the AirPort Express as a WiFi Base station, then follow the KB article's instructions ( which are not accurate ) to re-configure the AirPort Express as a WiFi client.
This is a really bad user experience, Apple.
Please try following your own instructions to see how fantastically they fail..then, re-write your KB articles.
Thanks,
PS — If anyone knows of any easier methodologies, do tell. (That's the "question" part of this inquiry )
PPS — My Mac Pro, which I used to configure the AirPort Express, does not have WiFi.
PPPS — Why do all the articles that match searches for "AirPort Express" return articles that refer to "AirPort Base Stations"?!  Please, for the love of UX, be consistent!

Here are the basic steps:
Run the AirPort Utility
Select the AirPort Express
Click on Manual Setup
Click on the AirPort icon
Click on the Wireless tab
For Wireless Mode, select the "Join a wireless network" option
In the Wireless Network Name field, enter the SSID of the hidden wireless network you want the Express to join.
Select the approrpriate wireless security type in the Wireless Security window.
Enter the appropriate wireless security password for the hidden network.
Click on Update.

How does one sync the new time capsule with the old airport extreme and airport express in order to extend range?

    Thanks for the additional information.
Unfortunately, the AirPort Utility application in the Lion and Mountain Lion operating systems, which is used to configure the new Time Capsule does not support the older versions of the products that you have.
Even if it did, there are no settings on the older AirPorts to "Extend a wireless network", so they are not compatible with the new Time Capsule if you intend to extend the network only using wireless connections.
If you have the ability to connect each AirPort to the Time Capsule using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, it might be possible to use a complicated workaround to install an older version of AirPort Utility to configure the older AirPorts to work with the new Time Capsule.
If you have another Mac there that is using the Leopard or Snow Leoapard operating system, things would likely be simpler. I have not done this type of procedure to mix a new Time Capsule with older AirPorts, so I would not be able to say whether this would work or not.

  • How does one manage these new render setting for previews?

I placed 4 HD clips from a nested into a sequence 5800 x 768 to mimic 4 side by side monitors for a multi channel video.  Each clip cut from the sequence are at 1280x720 all sitting side by side. However when I rendered the previews, they came look all squished. However when I exported the frame it looks fine in Photoshop. (I changed the uploaded image to what it looks like in Premiere in Photoshop to demonstrate the appearance in Premiere.)
I imagine that the distortion has to do with the sequence render setting which for some reason comes out to 1918 x 253...or the pixel aspect ratio? How does one manage these new render setting for previews so it looks normal in the monitor?

Either way, I thought that this format would be a great way to view on the monitor 4 channels at the same time. I may need to place them on a “normal” 1440 x 1080 sequence in a line, bringing them down to 25% scale to make it work in the end. I did just try that. I think it will work...but when I imported and nested the old file, the scratch disks changed from the original set up on a D drive back to the main hard drive so I had to change it agin. Otherwise it works fine...so I’ll go with this for now
These are the instructions I was given.I attched a screen save of the AE file they asked me to use (They must be on vacation, because I have not been able to get hold of them). I don't know After Effects very well:
“As you begin creating or adapting work for e4c, you may find an After Effects template developed for this system to be helpful. Attached you'll see a zipped file with two AE templates. There is some detailed information (below) from the artist that developed these for us. In addition, a few bits of information that might help you along are:
    ·        The "Watchout"  playback system can support WMV or a QuickTime files . We like .mov files with H.264 codec best!
    ·        The end resolution of the four screens is 5120 x 720 pixels (1280x720 each).
    ·        If works are four-channel, please provide a separate audio (aiff) file so it doesn't slow any one video down.”
    Thanks for your help!

how does one keep the photo description attached to a photo in iphoto when that photo copies to a disc or flash drive?
the metadata transfers ok, it is the description of that photo that does not transfer.

Use the File -> Export command and note the settings to write the metadata to the file on export.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.

Yes, since you are trying to keep things separate, that is exactly what you would do.

  • How do I get a 1st generation time capsule to join a wifi network?

    OK, I've searched the groups but no luck.  Here's my situation;
I'd like to configure a 1st generation time capsule to join a wifi network ideally with a printer attached to the USB.  My set up is an iMac running 10.9.3, Airport Utility 6.3.2 and a 1st Generation TC with the latest firmware (7.6.4).  I'm trying to connect it to an ADSL Wifi Modem/Router.  I know a cabled connection would give better performance but want a wifi only connection as the printer is in a different room.
I've disabled the network functions (bridge mode) but I can only see wireless options to Create a Wireless Network, Extend a Wireless Network or Off, not to Join.  If I try to extend I get the option to add an SSID, security & passwords but it doesn't seem like parameters to join  -the drop-down doesn't list available networks to join & manually entering the main wifi network and password doesn't work.
Is my desired config even possible?
    Dave

Something.....a Mac or PC will need to have a 5.x version of AirPort Utility installed on the computer.
Perform a factory default reset on the Time Capsule by powering it off for a few minutes. Then, hold in the reset button first and keep holding for an additional 10-12 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the Time Capsule. Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for  the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Open up AirPort Utility on the computer, select the Time Capsule and click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to type in a device name and password that you want to use for the Time Capsule, set Time Zone, etc.
Click the Wireless tab next to the Base Station tab
Hold down the option or Alt key while you click on the Wireless Mode setting box
Select the Join a wireless network setting
Select the name of the wireless network
Enter the password for the wireless network
    Verify the password
Click Update to save the settings
Note....everything here assumes that the router that provides the wireless network is using WPA2 Personal security, which is the default setting for the Time Capsule.

Voicemail is left at your carrier's server. That will continue to work unless you report your iPhone as lost or stolen with your carrier.
You may never find it again and you can't if the iPhone remains offline or out of service which means the iPhone is powered off or doesn't have cellular reception.

  • HT5022 I am using Mac OS version 10.9.2 how can I configure a 802.11g AirPort Express? I have AirPort Utility 5.6 but can't run it

    Thank you for any suggestions

My frustration stems from the fact that the devices haven't stopped working.
Neither have any of my Apple devices, the oldest of which dates back to 1985, and some of which remain in daily use with Macs running Mavericks. They have plenty of moving parts, too.
I gather you would be thrilled if your Express were to have simply have stopped working some time ago. If you are waiting for it to die, you may have a very, very long wait.
They are quite capable of continuing to fill their function.
So do OS X Panther, Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion. All those operating systems are quite capable of administering your original AirPort Express. Use one of them, as I explained in my original reply to this Discussion.
Even if you were to consider your old Express fully depreciated, which it is not, it cost you all of about 25¢ a week to enjoy the benefits of using it. If you consider such an expense unwarranted, you ought to reevaluate what you consider an essential expense, and what does not.

  • How can I use an Airport Express to join my wireless network and provide an internet signal to my Power Mac g5 via an ethernet cable?

I have a power mac g5 that does not have a wireless card, and connects to the internet via ethernet cable.
I want to know how to set up an airport express so that it joins my wireless home network and provides the G5 with an internet signal.
This via an ethernet cable that is plugged  into the airport express and then into the ethernet port on the g5.
Please advise as I have configured the airport express in every way possible, the green light is on and when I plug the ethernet cable into the G5 my network cofigurations shows nothing and says that the ethernet cable is not plugged in (It is).
I get an internet signal if the ethernet cable is plugged directly into my wireless router, so the ethernet port works.
    Please assist. Thanks.

Two requirements that must be met to do what you want.......
    1) An AirPort Express 802.11n must be used. Check the Model No on the label on the side of the Express. It needs to be A1264. Any other model number will not do what you want.
    2) The Express must be configured to "Join a wireless network" and the option to enable Ethernet Clients must be checked.
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
The box to "Allow Ethernet Clients" must be checked
Please check to verify that your AirPort Express meets both requirements

  • Arch-0.6 How does one configure the kernel

Hi everone. I'm a new arch user (coming from gentoo) this is my first post here.
I installed Arch Linux 0.6 on my computer. I have experience configuring kernels, but I'm not sure where to do this in Arch Linux. In /usr/src there is only a "linux' directory, which I am unable to run the make menuconfig command from.
Normally I would cd to /usr/src/linux, and run "make menuconfig". In the Linux directory are a number of other directories in which I cannot find the kernel.

Well I am really happy to be able to configure MY kernel because I can get rid of modules I dont use and I dont have to bother about hotplug desperately trying to load modules that generate error messages.
Arch's stock kernel is good, but I dont like to have 40 modules loaded at the same time, each dependant of the other, which is kind of a cube tower getting always higher, thus always more unstable.
How many times have I heard of people not being able to get  sound working ? They had 15 modules for sound , which is absolutely scaring...especially when a piece of them generated strange error messages...
And if you compile your kernel, you know what exactly is handling your harware and so you are much more able to figure out what is going wrong when a device is not working anymore.
I had a working system with a stock kernel and about 30 blacklisted modules, and about 10 manually added. I felt the system was going to crash every five minutes when I was playing multimedia(which actually occured a couple of times)
I also had a working sytem with my own kernel, and it was much more stable. Hotplug loaded the modules I wanted it to load, and did not need hours to probe all my devices.
When I build external modules(NVIDIA, ipw2100 wireless drivers), they compile fine, whereas they dont always do with the stock kernel.

iTunes help is anything but. Instructions are to go to "Store" and select authorize this computer but there is nothing close to that choice. It seems that this should be doable from the account settings.

The Store menu is at the very top of the screen on a Mac and at the top of the iTunes application window in Windows.

  • How does one Rewire Reason 4 into Logic Express 7.3?

I've been trying to help a friend do this over the phone. I used to have Reason 3 and never had a problem with it, but when I have my man boot up Reason 4 after Logic Express, it does not go into slave mode. I don't know why, or how to tell him what to do.
He alleges there is no information in the Reason 4 manual, and does not have the Logic Express 7 manual. What is the exact procedure for this?

Has he tried opening gthe Reason template in Logic?
Or is he just adding Reason objects in the default environment template?

  • How does one fix/edit a scanned book which is in pdf format so that it may be read aloud...

    ...by the computer?
When I try to utilize the Read Out Loud feature in Adobe Reader, it says that the page is blank because it sees it as an image, not text.
Is Adobe Acrobat capable of fixing this?  Could someone please teach me how?  If not, could someone direct me as to how I might be able to go about learning how to accomplish this?
Also, has anyone developed a program that will read text from the screen, regardless of it being an image?

Yes, I had saved a separate file of it and was able to search/find a word on a page, but Read Out Loud still said "blank".
I doubt it's the quality of the scan, although, I could see that issue coming up.  I read at "getsatisfaction" that it might be the pdf version, mine being 1.5, apparently should be converted to 1.7.  I just downloaded the pdf version converter and will get back later.
    EDIT
I guess the converter I found wasn't free.  Anybody know of a way to convert pdf versions?  Is Acrobat capable of this feat?
