HT1766 How can I backup pictures on 1st gen. ipad to my 10.5 G5 power mac?

I tried doing this before but discovered itunes wipped out all of our grandchildren pictures. Can't lose the pictures again. I need a step by step solution.

When you upgrade the device, it is erased in the process. If you backup first, you should be able to restore from the backup, sync with iTunes and all should be OK. So obviously, something went wrong.
I must still be missing something because I would have thought that an Apple Store Genius would know about this. Importing photos from the iPad to the Mac is pretty basic stuff if you have iPhoto or Image Capture on the Mac.

Nope, the top OS version for the IBM processor is 10.5.8, and under that version I can not update the iTunes further than the 10.6.3 :-(
But that means the brand leaves a large chunch os costumers with still perfectly operating computers out of the loop on purpose, so to force us to upgrade computer?
Not fair at all, both are legitimate Apple products, they should sync no matter what! The sad thing is theu used to, before I migrated to iOS7 on the iPad, move that I now regret...

How to fresh install iOS on 1st gen iPad?

I'm being "gifted" a couple dead 1st gen iPads. Both have dead batteries and supposedly no OS. Included will be new batteries. I'm sure I can swap batteries (YouTube has a video for everything). I just d/l'ed iOS 5.0. I've never dealt with Apple before (I'm a Linux guy...shrug) so I don't know jack about this.
How can I install iOS 5.0 on my "new" iPads? I'm planning on using one for myself and giving one to a local, home schooling family that can't afford a "toy" like this (even if this "toy" would make a good learning base).
Do I just plug the iPad into the computer and hit a few keys on the iPad screen? Or is there more to it?
Thanks for all your help. I've installed Windows and Linux OSs via both USB (thumb) drive and CD to a computer and Android OSs via both BT and USB cable (to/from my computer). I'm not a complete computer noob but know enough to break things pretty well.

Apple software goes through checks and balances to make sure the latest software for that version of hardware is what gets installed. You can't unforunately; if iTunes won't detect the device the /BEST/ thing you can do on a windows computer is go to the Start Menu > Computers > and check to see if the windows computer had detected the device as a camera, if yes; Lucky you, If no; you're outta luck

If you have been syncing with one computer and iTunes library only, and if you have been using the same Apple ID and iTunes account for all of your purchases - I'm going to take a wild guess that you have apps on the iPad that are not in iTunes on your PC. If that is the case ...
You need to transfer the purchased apps from the iPad to the PC first.
1) Without connecting your iPad to your computer, start iTunes. Click on Edit. Click on Preferences. Click on Devices. Check the box next to "Prevent your iPod etc. from automatically syncing." Click OK.
2) Now connect your iPad to your laptop and start iTunes.
3) When iTunes starts, right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select Transfer purchases etc.
4) After it finishes transferring all your apps to your computer, right click on your iPad and select Backup your iPad.
5) Click on the Apps Tab in iTunes and make sure that you have a checkmark in the boxes next to the names of all of the apps that you want to Sync to the iPad. Make sure the Sync Apps heading has a checkmark in it as well.
6) Now click on Apply in the lower right corner of the iTunes window on the right
If everything on your iPad looks good after the sync, go back and click on Edit / Preferences / Devices and UN-check the box next to Prevent your iPod etc. The only other thing you may want to do is to double check that all of your photos, music, movies and everything else that you want are still on the iPad and if needed go into each tab in iTunes and select that content to sync and sync again before you disconnect from iTunes.

My computer's hard drive isn't very big and it's getting quite full backing up my iPhone and iPad. I would like to transfer the back ups to an external hard drive but I haven't figured out how to do this. Also, I would also like to move the Apps folder to the external hard drive.
Although I hope to eventually purchase an Apple computer, for now I still have a PC running Windows XP. Does anyone know how to transfer these files to an external hard drive using Windows XP?
My iPad is the newest with retina display, 128 GB Wi-fi.

Relocate iOS device backups
Assuming you're running Windows Vista or later you can use the following steps:
Open a command prompt by hitting the start button and typing CMD<Enter> in the search box that opens up.
To move the current backup folder from C: to D: type in this command and press <Enter>
Move "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
Where <User> is your Windows user name.
To make iTunes look for the data in the new location type in this command and press <Enter>
MkLink /J "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
If your external drive has a different letter or you already have a folder called "Backup" then edit "D:\Backup" accordingly in both commands.
If you're still running Windows XP you can use Junction (cmd line tool) or NTFSLink (shell ext). In both cases you move the existing folder to a new location, create an empty folder where the old one used to be, then use the tools to get the operating system to link the two together and silently redirect any file operation on the old location through to the new one.
Note that while this method works for iOS device backups it cannot be used to redirect sections of the media library.

Yes I have the current updated version of iTunes which is 11.1.5. So yeah when I connect my iPhone directly to the MacBook Pro I have tunes pops up and wants me to restore the phone iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPhone “Enzo’s iPhone”. Go to the Summary tab in iPhone preferences and click Restore to restore this iPhone to factory settings. it doesn't give me any option to click to manually back up or restore. It only happens to my iPhone because I'm a Apple Developer and I called Apple just now and they said it works for non developers but for developers the new update isn't for some reasons working like it should Apple Care wasn't able to give me any help regarding this they told me to contact the developing team so I did but it haven't heard back from the team. My friends iPhone 5 works when I plug it into my computer and it shows what should be showing the normal user interface like manually backup or restore ect... but when I load it up this shows ? iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPhone “Enzo’s iPhone”. I want to transfer every text on my iPhone, since the beginning of time, onto my Mac in an easily synced and accessible way. I want to use iMessage on my Mac to store all of the texts on my phone.
Eventually, I want to hold only a month/week's worth of texts on my iPhone to save space.

Text (SMS) cannot be mixed with iMessage.
You can do a backup using iTunes where your SMS and iMessage will be included but you can't be selective on what you want to restore. It's all or nothing. Furthermore the backup cannot be read without a 3rd party tool.

How can I backup my iPad to another iPad backup I have on my same iCloud account. The old one is totally gone. Both backups are listed on my iCloud account. So is there any way I can backup the one I have now to the other one. I really just want the pictures that are in the old backup. I have tried resetting and erasing all settings and data on the one I still have, but when I go to restore by iCloud; it only gives me the choice of restoring the same iPad. Then in iCloud>storage>backup, I'm still not able to choose which backup to backup to. I've even tried deleting the backup to the iPad I still have, then resetting all setting and data on the iPad, hoping that in resetting up the iPad it would give me the option to backup to my old iPad. But it doesn't. It still has memory of the backup of my newer iPad.

The photos could have gone a couple of different places ...but it is unlikely that they are lost forever. It kind of depends how your Backup was done. With many Computer-based iTunes connections, your Computer Photo App will actually open first when you connect your iPhone and the photo transfer will happen between the iPhone and the App. Assuming that isn't what happened in your case, but you did Backup on iTunes, you could reconnect to iTunes and then click on your iPhone button on the Computer screen ...typically the iTunes Summary screen will show up ...but you can tab-through the various iTunes Screens and find the Photo page. You could check your options and see if you have a Manual Sync setting regarding iTunes to iPhoone ...this would mean you have to select the Photos you want to download to the iPhone during the Sync.
