i need to bavk up my iphone and then upload a new software and dont have a clue how to do this? need help

I'm looking for some advice please. Ive dropped my iphones 4s in water and its all working except the screen is not visable. I havent backed up my phone before and need to do so as i am getting a replacement. I am trying to connect it to the computer but it keeps asking for me to put in the apple password on the handset which i can not do. Is there any other way i can back up my phone?

Try backing it up to your computer with iTunes. Connect it to your computer, open iTunes, click on the name of the phone in iTunes, go to the Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings and click Back Up Now. Also go to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases to transfer you apps and other purchased media to your iTunes library.

How to properly back up the iPhone (I clearly did it wrong)

I backed up my iPhone, named it and then restored it to the factory settings. When I went back and right clicked on the phone to "restore from backup", the backup I had just made was not there. Only a backup from September. Now, I've lost everything since September, that was on my phone. I was wondering what I did wrong and how to properly back up the iPhone for future reference. Does it only save 2 backups? I just am not sure why it didn't save my most recent backup, and rather, saved one from September. Sad, I lost a lot of important texts, numbers, notes and pictures. Thanks for any help!
