I accidentally erased a long stream of texts from/to my daughter. How can I restore them?

You can only get them back if they were part of your last iPhone backup.   You would need to restore the device, and would lose any changes made to your device since then.

    Just delete them. Or, do you mean beyond just deleting them? Then, you'd need to wipe the phone - select Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. That's a secure wipe of the iPhone contents, takes several hours (connect to AC power). You'll need to set your phone up from scratch (and erase the old backup(s) from your computer, since your SMS history is part of the backup).

    As for the actual process, the most recent back up was prior to my deletion.   Three last questions (I hope...):
    1) How will I know what I need to redownload from itunes?

After doing a restore from my most recent backup, the text messages are restored, but many of the photos only show a file name. The files are primarily jpegs along with a few .png and .mov.     As we know, every time you sync iDevice with iTunes, it will automatically make a backup of your iDevice contents including photos, SMS, reminders, contacts and more. Therefore, as long as you have ever synced your iPhone with iTunes, you can recover deleted text messages from iPhone. Do not connect your iPhone to iTunes again until the messages are recovered with iPhone Data Recovery. Otherwise, the old backup file will be overwritten by the current content on your iPhone. Once it happens, the deleted messages will be gone forever.

    If the backup is made after the messages were deleted, then you won't be able to get them back via an iTunes restore. However, you may be able to use a third-party program to look at the backup made after the messages were deleted and see what information about those messages is recoverable.
    One program, the one I work on, is called Decipher TextMessage. Our software will scan the text-message database and show you what information (whole and incomplete) was found that has been previously deleted. We've had a lot of success helping folks recover their deleted text messages -- it doesn't always work 100% since we're at the mercy of how the database works but it's worth a shot to see what you can find!

    If you have deleted text messages since the last time you backed up the device, you cannot. You can restore to a backup, but you don't have one. You can select an old backup and try to recover them via a 3rd party software solution. However, you don't have that backup to work with. I'm sorry, but you are out of luck. There is no way for you to recover them.
    I find it interesting that you have not backed the phone up since October 1st. If these messages and other data are that important, then you need to be backing up more often than that.

    if you are certain that you have those text message in the icloud backup, then do this.
    Go to settings - general - reset - erase all contents and settings - this will wipe your phone clean, then when it boots back up, you'll have the option to restore from your icloud backup.  Your phone will restore to that backup, anything current you have will be erased.
